Milviz P-38 textures

This for the not-yet-released Milviz P-38L.

and yes, those prop textures... to be honest, I don't think they look that good in motion, but hey, that's only my opinion...

Me, I'm only playing with the paintkit, and to wet your appetite of course!
And of course, most of the texture work was done by Milviz, we have to give credit where credit is due!

Hi Jan,
Congratulations for Your awesome work !!!
It seems to me there is a little issue in the props rendering : I think that the rivets on the spins must disappear when props rotate and the blade hole must be more "blurred".....
:wavey::wavey::wavey::wavey:

I know, but there's only one texture for the prop, no rotating texture

Meanwhile, I've continued working on the textures:
I had forgotten to paint the wingtips and have now added the stainless steel plates around the superchargers:

I changed the color of the paint to something closer to the metal color and added the leading edge of the elevator:

Your paints look superb, Jankees, whatever the outcome of the above detail discusions. A bit off-topic: can you perhaps post a few VC shots?

and I've added the inboard mirrors. You see the lighter sky looking up:

and the darker ground looking down:

you also see the no step sign on the window sill. Here it is in red letters, some aircraft show a red bar with white letters, but I'll save that for another paint.
If you don't see any glaring mistakes, I think I'll use this as a base for my other repaints... OK with you guys?

Thanks to Jan and John for the discussion regarding how the P-38 was painted, acid etched or polished. That is what I love about this forum. Two guys who are really in the know letting the rest of us in on some great information. Much appreciated. :adoration:

Related to what I mentioned about wartime aircraft manufacturing using acid-etching on skins where spot welding occurred, in the following photos of factory-new bare metal P-51's and P-47's, the cowl panels (and some fairings/other panels) are brighter/more dull because of the acid-etching treatment, not paint. Like the P-38, the cowl panels on the P-51 and P-47 also had spot welding (quite a bit of it) to join the outer skins to the inner stamped structural portion. In-use over time the acid-etched surface would wear, just as the rest of the skins would dull, and there would be less variation in the appearance of the skins.

On the authentically-restored P-51D "Upupa Epops", the dull cowl panels (and some other panels and fairings) are not painted, but are the result of those panels being acid-etched, as per original. Note that, because of their reflective and specular attributes being different than the shiny aluminum, the dull acid-etched panels can appear either darker, similar in shade, or lighter compared to the shiny aluminum, depending on angle/lighting, much like the silver-painted wing surface. In order to get the proper appearances under all lighting scenarios in FSX, it requires special attention between all four - diffuse values, diffuse alpha values, specular values, and specular alpha values.

Note in this photo, the panels which are acid-etched, actually show up brighter than the silver-painted rudder.

Regarding the Milviz P-38 VC, as I've mentioned to Collin, I could sit and admire that control yoke all day - a gorgeous piece of modeling and texturing. The VC has been crammed-full of detail, wherever you look, including even behind and under the seat.

"If you don't see any glaring mistakes, I think I'll use this as a base for my other repaints... OK with you guys?"

Speaking as a life-long P-38 nut, the only changes I would suggest concern minor details with the anti-glare panels. I believe the OD on the inside of the engine nacelles should extend a little farther down to the bottom of the panel containing the small air scoop, and the area immediately below the flat part of the windscreen should be OD as well. Several of the images posted by Bomber_12th show these areas to good effect. Overall, these are stunning paints, Jan Kees!

see? this is why I need your input! After a while you just overlook things like that.
As for etched vs painted, they do look different now from bare metal, that's a start...

oh dear, I overdid it a bit with the OD below the windscreen!

still some details to sort, but getting there..

So, I changed the antiglare panels on the pod and on the engines, (I actually found there are two variations for the panel in front of the cockpit, I will be doing the other were appropriate) and I toned down the paintwork a bit, and adressed a few more little odds and ends, so here's what it looks like now:

you think you will be able to live with and fly it like this??
