Missions & Scenery for 31 Squadron RAAF

View attachment 89003
attached mission for 31 Sqdrn on 2-3 December 1942, flying from Drysdale.

I had to modify the dp files of the Beaufighter to allow if to fly lower in mission builder, and also allow the A6M2 to fly a bit slower (to see if it used less runway when landing? - )
also changed the formation to get the Beaufighters tighter together - so that will be lost if opened/edited in Mission Builder.

Interestingly, the AI aircraft flies over the terrain as if it's still using the original mesh, and the AI aircraft rise as they approach what would have been higher ground, but isn't!! Mission Builder even keeps wanting to adjust the altitude of some waypoints to match the older mesh. Is anyone else finding this?

I don't do enough mission writing to really comment, but I believe you may have stumbled on a quirk of Mission Builder.

It's really a stripped down version of the CFS2 exe, to allow mission creation & editing.

Because of this, I think they stripped out a lot of the code that wouldn't be useful.

Key amongst this, I believe, is that MB only seems to use mesh & A16N flattens that live within the sims own file structure.

I use a centralised scenery folder, kept outside each Sim install, to save disk space.

I've noticed that quite often when I'm creating a new airbase scenery, everything displays fine in the Sim, but when I open up Mission Builder to place GSL objects, part of the blended background doesn't show. It's as though the sim isn't recognising the LOD8 mesh, or any A16N flattens associated with the new base.

This can make gsl object placement somewhat challenging:banghead:

I checked this out recently. I took a new airstrip I'm working on, that has this display issue in Mission Builder.

If I take a copy of that airbases A16N flattens bgl and place it in the installs SCENEDB/runways/scenery folder, the display issue (in Mission Builder) is resolved.

It does seem like Mission Builder only likes scenery bgls that live within that particular install' folder structure ...

A16N flatten mesh blending

JUst an update to my reply from yesterday. Putting the A16N flatten in the Runways scenery folder works a treat for Mission Builder, just don't be surprised to see sloping water close by. It seems that MB loads the Runways A16N flattens last of all (irrespective of where it's positioned in your scenery hierarchy), so the fine-tune coastal water flatten A16Ns, so often necessary because of the "jagged" nature of the A16N blending with surrounding mesh, get overwritten.

I wouldn't advise placing these other (z.../zee...)flattens in the Runways folder, it would get too complex awfully quickly & might ruin how the scenery is meant to appear. Tracking down which A16N is creating an issue would just become a rabbit hole to disappear into ...:toilet_claw:

It's better to just put the runway flatten in place whilst you're using Mission Builder placing objects. Once you're done positioning objects & have saved your mission builder work/layouts etc., remove it before you fly the mission in the Sim itself.

I've experienced this problem a number of times as well. While in MB it can be fixed by going into Advance Settings/Image Quality and sliding the terrain complexity/DEM settings back to maximum. MB has a habit of sliding the settings to minimum when it encounters complex terrain scenery.

Good info Kevin. I never thought about MB lowering the user settings on its own, but we know CFS2 can be "quirky":dizzy:

Here is a fuselage texture for Beaufighter MkIC A19-47 of RAAF 31 Squadron 1942-1943.

You will need the Beaufighter IC ns (no spinner) of RAAF 30 Squadron by William Dickens (bismarck13) and Oldwheat.

an initial effort at a campaign for the Beaufighters of 31 Squadron. 12 missions from Nov 1942 to Nov 1943. Still needs a lot of work to improve the scenery etc from Timor to the Aru Islands especially. Besides the stock aircraft, I've used Beaufighter Mk1Cns, and also A6M2N_Rufe, BSK_Spitfire_Mkvc, F1M2, mz-e13a1, mz-ki45-h, and BR KI21 Sally View attachment 91831

May I make the suggestion to formally upload the campaign so it will be permanently available in the library for folks? :encouragement:

Here's a 17 mission campaign that's a lot improved. I'll leave it here as an attachment for a while (feedback?) before looking at uploading it. I'll aim to slowly improve the scenery. This Campaign works best with the original CFS2 terrain mesh at the moment. View attachment 91857

I did find the Beaufighter cannon were too far forward (weight location) so moved them back, which improved the handling a lot.

additional basic runway for Drysdale, where a few of the missions are flown from, and a few others around the Coomalie area - Hughes, Livingstone, Batchelor. (There are some nice MR airfields for Darwin, Batchelor and Livingstone but they don't seem to be at anywhere near the correct height relative to the surrounding terrain, with Batchelor especially looking like it's on top of a mountain.) I''ve managed to find the correct location of the wreck of the Maroubra which was sunk at Milingimbi during the 1943-5-10 attacks, so will update that mission. Also I will need to update the Spitfires used so they have the correct armament (2 x 20mm instead of 4 x 20mm!) View attachment 31sqdron_airfields2.zip

AH..how to do actually install of all this? * confused emoji *
It will take me a while to knock up some sort of install guide, but initially just copy all of the mission files (.mis and .dyn files) into your cfs2/CAMPAIGNS folder, along with the .cmg file. It's also a good idea to put the mission miles into your cfs2/MISSIONS folder so you can see which ones work and which ones require you to install additional aircraft/ships/scenery etc. All the mis and dyn files will open in notepad, and can be edited, - so for example, you could change any of the aircraft, ships, scenery to suit what you already have installed.

Also make sure you have the country.cfg file with Australia as [country.10]

Here's a list of the aircraft and ships used;

stock A6M2_Zero
stock G4M2_Betty
stock B25D_MITCHELL
Beaufighter MkICns
BR2 KI21 Sally
A6M2N_Rufe
BSK_Spitfire_MkVC (I will probably replace this later)
mz-ki45-h
mz-e13a1
F1M2
BR2 Ki-27 Nate
ki-48

HMAS_Bathurst_Class_MS_LOD
SS_Alagna
HMAS_Wilcannia_PB
HMAS_Kuru_PB_LOD
assorted stock ships

trees I've mostly used;
LW_Coconut_palm_D1
LW_Boabab_tree_D1

I'll get a more detailed list of buildings etc, but for starters;
LW_Revetment_D1
AF_Overhead_Cvr_Bamboo
AF_Overhead_Cvr_PalmFrn
CD_Barracks_Small_Bergen
CD_Hangar_Ypenburg
CD_WaterTower
jptroop_nibbio
