More Discovery

Seems that every flight I continue to tweak a little here a little there and then marvel at what I see that I never did before. Reading through the P3D Forums I came across a discussion on Micro stutters (which I haven't noticed at all by the way). Part of that discussion mentioned "Aero" and "VSync". Of course like a hypochondriac who's discovered he has a new disease, I had to run right to the Sim and try out the cure, lol. Amazing! Just the increased clarity was worth the change but colors appear more saturated, shadows and lighting appear to be more refined. I say "appear" because I don't know that it would be the same for others, it's just that it does seem to have done that for mine. I can't even imagine what P3D would look like with a better Graphics Card. Enjoying my training immensely, lol.

Here is the discussion thread:

A few things I got from this:
VSync won't work unless Aero is active. Also, there are "Sweet Spots" in the fps settings that work better than others. Read through the entire thread (5pages) because what some folks suggest might be relevant to your system/setup but you can also jump to page 4 and read "Beau's" findings which describes a glitch LM discovered in the coding and how to correct. This is one of the "Fixed" items that will be incorporated with the next update.

Many thanks Falcon, I'll check it out. I wonder when the next update will be? If LM are true to form it will require a complete un install and re installation.

Ian.

I think the last time frame I saw posted was this month some time. They have a lot of things that are currently on the "Fixed" list, but they also have quite a few that they're still working. Not sure if those will affect the release of the update or not. I hope not.

Really appreciate the heads up Ed, Prepar3D version2 is as smooth as silk for me with a NVidia GTX 780 (brand new). I'm one of those guys who is always looking for some kind of improvement. I guess FSX made me that way when it first came out. Studder Studder Studder. Off to check out the article.

Heya Ian,

If I remember correctly LM said they wanted to implement a "patch" process in P3D V2. Not sure when such a process would be available, but it does recognize the challenge of reinstalling the entire world.

If you're an optimist, we get to test this patch process in the very next release. If you're a pessimist, we have to test this patch process in the next release....:icon_lol:

That's my current limitation now Tom. . .the graphics card. I have an NVidia 650Ti w/2gig. It does OK, but I'm limiting myself and the P3D capabilities by not having a better card. Looking for a good 4gig card that I can afford (key word here_"Afford", lol). So for now, I am very pleased with what I see as I'm flying, but I know it could be much better. The only other decision I face now is. . .do I even keep FSX installed any longer, lol.

L-M have stated quite firmly that all update 'patches' will be done via the "slipstream" method, meaning the binaries are all patch-updated, not replaced. In simple terms, no uninstall/reinstall required.

Ed, I am keeping FSX installed for scenery development purposes. There are just some things that don't work in Prepar3D. Maybe someday FSX will go the way of FS9 and all version before but for now seems I need it. With P3D v2 coming on the scene, I definitely uninstalled P3D v1.4.

Hang in there the newer video cards will come down in price.

I want to go read that thread on the P3D site, but it won't load up......Grrrrr

Well Ed, what you've said makes me more confident when I finally decide to purchase P3D V2.:ernaehrung004: It reminds me a little of the Dx10 saga, until Steve Parsons fixed nearly all the problems.

Your System is similar to mine Roger although your CPU is faster. I am able to see fps numbers twice what I was getting in FSX. Granted, not all the bells and whistles are turned on yet, but I'm not far from it. Even when the fps dips a bit, the sim is still smooth which is nice. The one thing I need to improve is the graphics card. An NVidia GTX650Ti with 2gig is no slouch, but P3D is geared around a 4gig card since the texture loading and processing is now handled by the GPU rather than CPU. So I really need the extra memory on the card now. Problem right now is. . .those 4gig cards aren't cheap, lol.

I haven't been able to get onto the LM forums since yesterday evening. Glad to know it's not just me.
It was extremely slow in loading the first time I got on this morning also. It never timed out, but it was pretty slow.

All this talk about Vsync, and Aero all sounds cool, except I gather that all refers to settings with Nvidia cards.

What about ATI cards?

I am running a World of Gamers Matrix HD5870 card. Seems to run FSX and P3Dv2 like gangbusters, but hey, if there's a tweak to make it better?

I am reminded of Tim Allen, when he would say "More POWER!" RRRRRRrrrrrrrrrr!!!!

Aero actually refers to the Windows desktop environment. Didn't work so well with Vista but has given me no issues with Win7 64. FSX automatically disables Aero, Prepar3D v2 leaves it active. Vsync refers to a display setting in P3Dv2 (mine is set to "on"). Currently using an AMD 6770 graphics card, but will be replacing that with something more capable in the near future. I'm managing to get 20-30 fps for the most part, but there are times when it's a stuttering mess.

I have had these stutters before. They are a lot different from FSX/1.4. You can be running at 50 FPS (smooth) and suddenly, and very faintly, you'll see a smooth flitter in the screen. Frame rates will remain high, but micro-skipping is occurring. It will come and go and be so faint that some people will probably not even be aware of it. I wasn't till I finally saw it. It only seems to happen at certain times, which I haven't located the causes yet.

Better then the ole 5 FPS stutters... :S

C'mon V2.1.....! I am ready for a cool update.

Have LM given an indication re when an update is going to be? I give up on their forums, sooooo slowwww.

Slow doesn't even come close to it! I think the folks who did LM's website also did a certain government healthcare website! Just kidding! :very_drunk:
