Mosaic Editor in Windows 11 - need some help

It going to be very bad news if we can't get it running on original windows 11 machines.

I have a new computer with win 11 pro. I installed Gmax 1st and mdxredist.msi. and other utilities. So from day one I did not have dx9 installed until I downloaded from the windows website. When I ran DXsetup.exe., that is when NET 2.0 and Net 3.0 was automatically installed.
When installation was completed restarted computer.

Question? Have you tried running with antivirus turned off? I may have turned it off while installing.

Just a thought... there are 2 versions of the .mos editor. I can't remember where or why, but I'm pretty sure that there are.

I have 2 versions, dated 03/03/2003 and 09/07/2003.

I doubt if it will make any difference but you never know.

I'm currently trying to install on my W11 laptop. No luck so far.

Worse case is to copy an existing mos file and changing the dds with a hex editor. That works for airfield textures etc. but not for complicated aircraft.

When win 10 came out I went the dual boot route with XP as my 2 boot.
I did a quick search of dual boot win 11 and win 10 and it appears it is a simple process now to do that. You don't have remove win 11 before installing win 10.

But no good for new aircraft where you have to place the bullet holes again.

It seems like a fairly simple program really, and would not be impossible to replace. The challenge would be compiling it into whatever code the actual mos uses.

True - the difference is the version with the Terrain SDK has slightly more detailed help. Which isn’t saying much.

I’m still on Win10 so can’t help here.

While have no idea what your particular issue is, all I know is that I've had not trouble with it on win11 pro. I am not running it on compatibility mode. My ChatGPT has several suggestions but asks
"If you like, I can help you or your friend go step-by-step through diagnosing what happens on launch (e.g., it won’t open at all vs. crashes when loading a file).
Would you tell me what exactly fails on your friend’s system — e.g., “no window opens,” “error dialog,” or “crashes after selecting a model”? That will narrow it to one of the causes above."

Would you tell me what exactly fails

I get.."An initialization error has occurred. Please ensure you have Managed Direct X 9 or greater installed"

I have the latest DX plus all the updates and updated gfx drivers.
W11 23H2 OS 22631.3737.

This is on a previous W10 machine, which I'm wondering is the issue.

OK from ChatGPT5.0 see also next post Actually that is the more important one

I attempted the instructions, still no luck.

Would those who have a working mos editor in windows 11 be willing to share what directx, .net, and Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables they have showing in the installed apps list?

So, good news! It's working now!

It is hard to determine exactly which versions of .NET and DirectX redistributables were needed - if any. I installed quite a few. In the end, James' ChatGPT instructions clued me in to the possibility I wasn't correctly installing the well known required Managed DirectX download here: https://sim-outhouse.org/sohforums/resources/managed-directx-for-cfs3-mos-editor-zip.778/

James' instructions mention extracting the contents of ManagedDX.CAB that comes from DXSDK_Jun05.exe. I did not locate DXSDK_Jun05.exe anywhere online, but ManagedDX.CAB is part of the above listed download. So here's the strange part. The readme in that download just says to run the mdxredist.msi file, which I had done, but it never got the mos editor to work. Instead, this time I took the hint from James' instructions to extract the CAB file to C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\DirectX for Managed Code\, but Windows didn't allow me to extract it there. So I made a new folder on my desktop and extracted it there, intending to copy whatever files that were extracted over to the required folder manually. Instead I found a new mdxredist.msi in the folder I extracted the .CAB to. This one was different than the file that you see when you first extract the download zip. Same name, but a smaller file size. I ran that file, and afterwards, the mos editor worked just fine.

Given this issue, I can't say one way or the other if any of the other DirectX files I installed were also needed to make this work, but I suspect that they were not.

Many thanks to James and all of you who helped me get this going again. What a relief! We need this tool to work!
