Moses' Riding The Clutch

Dawn departure for Riobamba.

Taking off: SEQU-SERB

Mostly uneventful flight into Riobamba. The airport is in a valley which made for a somewhat hot approach initially.

Didb't Ritchie Valens make a song about that place?

Uhh...yes. Umm, well maybe not.

Of note: 35 nm E/NE of SERB is the infamous FS2004 "hole" of SESM Shell Mera. Rented a Lockheed L-10 and made the short hop over there for a little sightseeing.

(Screenies show it as "SEPA" for some reason).

We should have made that a mandatory stop :d

Used to fly the Bill Lyons Sikorsky S43 in and out of there. Never tried it with the Beech....

Moving along to next required stop. Weather report looks to be good.

Thought the airport was in the next valley. Was a little surprised to see the runway show up a bit early. Hope the passengers and llamas didn't mind the slightly aggressive descent pattern.

We have been cleared up to FL17500 from this point on. Don't know if that is good or bad. Blasting off for Jaen.

Cold feet and I nearly soiled my britches. Came in a little hot and a little higher than we wanted to. But like many before, I thought I could get her down and stopped in plenty of time before the cliff face showed up in the window. Still going about 60 mph, we were running out of grass and it looked like a crash was pending. With a few seconds to go I decided to unlock the tailwheel and try to groundloop the ship and hope for the best. Well, we spun around and had slowed just enough to keep from dragging a wing tip, ending up 180 degrees from our approach. Dodged a boolit for sure. Phew!

Good job Moses, been holding off on that gravy run to see how many craters I'll have to dodge in the runway. Glad you're not one of them.;)

Saddling up for Huaraz. WX report looks keen. Keeping eye open for craters of gravy as we depart...

Note: Have Aviaco manual open to "emergency procedures" page.
