MR's Guam Is Up And In The Queue!

Maskrider's new Guam package is in the queue and will soon be available for downloading. Please use this new thread for comments, tips and questions once you start flying from the new airfields.

Thanks for all the effort on the airfields MR!

Not a problem guys! I have lots of fun doing it!

Thanks Dave for being on the ball and getting this thread started! I appreciate it!

I want everyone to feel free to post with whatever issues- good or bad- that they might have with this package.

I attach below a body of cut and pasted information about Guam and its development as a major air facility during WWII. It all comes from a word doc file that I was using as a great big clipboard for information I would paste up when I would happen to run across it. There is absolutely zero attribution or credit given although I believe that a goodly portion of it comes from this website: HyperWar: Building the Navy's Bases During WWII- Marianas and Iwo Jima

A few clicks down the page at the website, the section on Guam begins. Much of that section is included in the info document I attached to this post. Of interest, and the main reason I drag this out so long- is that the section on Guam and Tinian include pictures of several scenery objects that would really be neat to have. I insert these pics below:
View attachment 11971View attachment 11972View attachment 11973View attachment 11974

The first are just oil storage tanks- I don't know what it is- they just seem bigger than any currently available. Might just be the old eyes playing tricks.
The second and even more interesting are what is describes as "Nose Hangars". They are very cool. The Hangars Type A small sort of serve the purpose.
The third pic shows a very cool and very run of the mill sort of Control Tower- at Tinian I believe.
However, the fourth picture is the most interesting, to me anyway. It shows a series of very large two story Quonset huts that were used for many purposes- these particular one were located at Bomber Wing (Group?) Comand/HQ at Agana. Notice that they are sitting on foundations that stair step down a slope.

I know where these things were located and the foundations are still clearly visible in Google Earth- at the west end of the north runway at NAS Agana. I even included them in the scenery- but didn't know, until just recently- yesterday- what had actually been on the foundations. I put some blister hangars on them- thinking them to be some sort of storage area warehouses or something. They were first brought to my attention by a web site called "Project Guam: WWII Maite-Tiyan". The guy included this picture- well I don't seem to be able to insert it for some reason- but the picture is on the linked page above- the picture shows these concrete foundations that "ran like stair-steps south from the runway, they are the remains of large Quonset huts and other structures." Well it wasn't until I ran across picture number 4 above that I realized what was on these foundations. See the buildings running like stair steps down the hill? Got to be them. Anyway- they would be neat buildings to have available. Hint, hint!;)

Sorry for that long winded post- just a couple of things I thought I would bring up.

Find attached to this post, the Guam Information page that I described above and also the image of those concrete foundations.

That's it!

Cheers and thanks for the interest and encouragement. Always a pleasure!

Chris

It's always a great event when a new 'MaskRider' comes out! Thank you, sir. I'm heading over to get it right now.:salute:

Guam scenery is installed and looking spectacular. Don't forget to check out Rota.

0_marianas_xcld.bgl seems to be required regardless of whether you have Rhumba's mesh and/or watermasks.

Thanks very much MaskRider.:ernae:

BTW - will you be uploading Boela, Ceram?

0_marianas_xcld.bgl seems to be required regardless of whether you have Rhumba's mesh and/or watermasks.

Hmmm, that is interesting. I am not using it myself. Is there a set of add on coastlines floating around that I don't know about? I thought that Rhumba's mesh and masks got rid of all existing cfs2 coastlines- no? Or do the stock CFS2 coastlines just not fit anymore and thus need to be dumped?

Thanks for bringing this up. I will have to do a little digging. I think I feel "Change 1" to the readme coming up.:d

BTW - will you be uploading Boela, Ceram?

That is a great question! The oil derrek barges are exhibiting some visual oddities that still require sorting out. I would love to finish up the Boela, Ceram project. Its a real neat place and would be a great place to operate from.

I use Rhumba's mesh as well as his older coast and water packages. I have his watermasking installed but not activated due to loss of beaches, rivers, etc.

I activated and deactivated the above scenery layers but could not get rid of the double coastline until I inserted your 0_marianas_xcld.bgl.

Thanks for the Boela update.

Cheers,
Kevin

Oh I see what is happening. I have all of the pacific specific beach/surf bgls removed from my world/scenery folder because they don't fit Rhumbas new shorelines. I just took them out and figured I would make my own whenever and where ever needed. Its been so long since I installed Rhumba's mesh and masks and did any scenery building that I forgot just how many different configurations are now possible- with mine being among the very odd ones I am sure. When I add those bgls back in, naturally I get the double shorelines and thus need the exclude.

I will make that change to the readme: the 0_marianas_xcld.bgl is not optional. Whoops!

Thanks, Kevin, for bringing it up.

OK changes made to install instructions!:ernae:

Readme file in the zip here at SOH has been updated. Boy I really, really like the ease of use and flexibility of SOH's new uploading protocol. Excellent! Thanks Ickie!

I attach a copy of the revise readme.

Ok, lets see if I have this straight - I ask because I don't use any mesh or masks or add-on sceneries other than some specific objects.

For the airfields to show up properly I need to d/load and install ALL the items listed on MR's site here? http://www.mask-rider.com/index.html

Just wanna be sure I do it right, as I really want these airfields to show up in all their glory. :)

If you don't currently have any custom meshes or masks installed you won't need any for this pack. It comes with its own meshes and masks.

As for scenery objects- the ones I list are the ones I have loaded on my rig. I won't swear that I use objects from every one of the listed packs in every single airfield project but I come close to it.

There is another option that in the past I included as a suggestion in install readmes. That is for the users to leave the xxx.gsl files (the scenery object layers) out of the install and instead place their own preferred scenery objects using Mission Builder's built in GSL Editor. Its an option.

OK guys-m I expect to see a few screen shots of happy people happily using this Guam scenery!

There have been 62 downloads so far and I haven't seen a single screenie. Makes me suspicious that things are not going smoothly and that the scenery is not getting installed successfully!

I'll admit that this new fangled scenery with all of its pre-install conditions and configuring can be a real pain- enough to make the faint of heart or just marginally interested give it a pass.

But if there is more frustration than I have seen here so far I would like to hear about it. :)

Otherwise, lets see a few screenies!

Cheers,
MR

Thanks MR!

My excuse for not having it installed just yet is that I just recently did a new install of my system, and I'm rebuilding my hanger library first before moving mud, which always seems to be more complex.

But knowing your work, I am looking forward to Guam.

Thanks Chris...

Due to pre-installed CFS2 campaign actions on and around Guam prior to the official 12/1945 operational date of NF, i am forced to create a new install for 12/1945 plus and take this GSL-based masterpiece into it as a permanent fixture.

When i crank up any existing CFS2 camp involving an invasion in the Marianas, i don't think it would be appropriado to see finished B-29 megabases on Guam, Saipan and Tinian. Throw in the complexities of excludes, permanent destructo GSL objects and that business with the defo rivers and streams and i think its best to set this one in place and forget about any conflicts with other area scenery installs until your next updates. No worries, this is something i've been planning since last summer when Dog1 released his Guam-Saipan mods. This just gives me more incentive to git it done already...

CheerZ!

She looks sweet Mask! :applause:

Carve another notch in the ol' ivory handle.

Any way you fly in on her, she's a beaut. :ernae:

Of course for testing purposes...I had to blow a few things up, nothing personal of course. :d

Slats

Here you go MR - B-29's returning at the end of the day after a long mission.

However, I am going to annoy you again - that exclude file has wiped out the ground textures on Tinian and Saipan.

Sorry,
KD

Naaahhh!

marianas_wm_3.bgl is what wiped out the stock land at Agijan, Tinian and Saipan. And it was on purpose! :d

I used one great big water mask file to wipe out the entire Marianas chain so that I could start fresh.

If I had been thinking with a little more foresightedness I would have done two water mask files- one for Rota and Guam and another for the three northern islands.

I can easily make another that only covers rota and Guam. Wouldn't hurt.

I'll have one posted shortly- to this thread- not as a change to the package.

Thanks for the feedback. It is a valid point and I am glad you pointed it out!

I should have mentioned it in the readme. I just totally forgot about it- total non issue for me- wasn't even on the radar screen! Hehe.

OK, just made one for ya. Find it attached. Has the same file name as the first. Just drop it in your main CFS2 Scenery folder and click yes to over write the other one.

Any roads, coastlines or rivers on those three northern Islands will still be gone.

Cheers,
Chris
