MSFS Releases Local Legend 17: THE Curtiss C-46 Commando

Oh, how do you do that?
I think the majority of simmers do exactly the same, I certainly do. You'd think Navigraph's annual survey would show that to all the aircraft developers who participate in it, and that they would know that a plane with AP is going to be much more popular than one without. I've only bought two planes with no AP, and I've edited them both to be compatible with the PMS50 GTN750 Deluxe which has a universal AP available in the menu bar pop-up window.
would you mind sharing how we go about that edit please?

It does have an AP, it's just the old-school Sperry and I'm fine with that.
The files are encrypted so no patching/modding.
Only flown for 10 minutes, about to have another go, but so far all good.

Another favourite aircraft of mine. I like the ones that lived in the shadow of their more renowned contemporaries - the Liberator with the Fortress, the Hurricane with the Spitfire, and the C-46 with the C-47. Being Aeroplane Heaven, I'll scrutinize the views and reviews very carefully.

I went ahead and got it. Not flown yet but first impressions are quite nice. The sounds are pretty good although it needs a lot more and thicker smoke on start. The prop arcs are great but the spinner has the usual crooked/wobble when turning. The PBR finish on the default paints is nicely done and overall the exterior passes the initial '50ft test' for me. The cockpit has a good feel to it and the instruments are clear with a realistic level of "distress". Flight dynamics to be tested later ! However, subject to that caveat -for the money (less than nine British quids) seems like a good purchase with only freeware upside to come with repaints and other of the usual MoDs if allowed.

The fuel system seems to have a mind of it's own, and not a particularly well balanced one...
You can roll the tank selectors around but can't tell which tank is selected, but that's OK because the aircraft seems to ignore them.

There is an ADF dial and a nicely modelled ADF selector but its not operable.
You can tune the VOR, but the needle doesn't seem to track.

The autopilot also has a mind of it's own - but a bit of **** should help here (and possibly with the other problems).

It's a very nice VC, especially in VR with those big windows :)

I did, I like it. If you got the recent C-47, system wise its very much like that, same old style sperry autopilot, no hidden GPS or modern AP. I did one flight with her and found it pleasant to fly and will certainly be using it more.

I do admit that back in the old FSX/P3D days when I wanted to do a long flight with an aircraft that was lacking a GPS or autopilot, or had an autopilot that I found hard to use, it was easy to patch in a 2D panel containing the default Garmin 500 and the autopilot from the default 737, so I had something I knew would be easy to do. I wish there was a way to do that in MSFS but so far I have found a way.

My Aerospace Science professor in AFROTC flew the Hump in C46s. He later became a friend of mine. One of his sons followed in his footsteps and retired as an O6 (Full Colonel) like his dad.

RIP Col David Hill you were a true hero and mentor to me.

I think I will buy this airplane in his honor.

Looking forward to repaints of this one! A lot of these found their way into bush / Alaska / Canada flying.

Don BP;)

So glad you picked it up, Jankees! It's a beautiful model and fun to fly, but the included liveries are hopeless.

Yes, this Commando is really nice and more than worse the small money. Radios and ADF are functionally, if you switch on avionics master on overhead. For the first look, all is working. Read the documents.

Funny, a "boy" is climbing the cockpit.

Just a quick flight and visual check and I like it. I'll be using this one quite a bit. Well worth the price by all means.

The only issue I've picked up on so far is with the Sperry Autopilot. When on, the elevator/pitch adjustment work fine, but the rudder/heading adjustment doesn't do anything. On this flight with the AP on, the aircraft was holding altitude, but was in a very slow turn to the left.

Beauty, Thomas! Assuming you'll be uploading that to Flightsim.com?

couple of questions please -

Where is the tail wheel lock control
I assume no flaps required for take-off as they are not mentioned in the pre-takeoff checklist items
