Must haves?

I just brought FSX Gold home tonight, and while I'm getting the feel of it, I was wondering what are the must haves? In FS9 I focused mostly on warbirds and carrier ops.

Any suggestions?

EDIT: Payware is an option, I'm going to get the FSX B-17 from A2A for sure.

if youre getting the A2A b-17, I suggest on holding off on that for a while, provided you want to fly other non-accusim planes. ever since i got their p-47 with accusim, i dont fly anything else really (in addition to the accusim Cub). which is a shame too, because there are such great planes out there free and payware to fly. it's just that there seems to be something missing from a plane without accusim in my opinion.
 
There are countless must-haves for FSX now.

Active Sky Evolution and REX2 should be at the top of the list. Then think about Orbx sceneries or GEX + UTX.

Way too many airplanes to list. What kinds are you interested in?
 
There are lots of good Piglet FSX aircraft here in the library. If you like low and slow I can highly recommend the Auster J1 available from Britsim (formerly Classic British Files) and Ant's Tiger Moth.

Britsim also has some great DH Hornets and others for FSX including the FSX Hunters.

All the above are freeware.
 
Javier Fernandez USS Nimitz package with Lamont Clarks AI carriers would be a good place to start.
Dino,s F-14 and T-45 as well as Vertigos fine carriers aircraft.
 
yeah looking back on purchases, I mostly got a bunch of planes over the years and then realized having a cool plane is great but the environment is just as important. Since there are so many great airplane addons out and many more to come, I would pick one or two planes depending on what you like to fly, and then focus on the other stuff like Orbx sceneries, REX, ASE...etc
 
A few must haves -

Payware Scenery -
OrbX PNW (plus any of their PNW airports)
REX or FEX for clouds etc

Freeware aircraft -
have a look at Piglet/Tim Conrad. My favourite is his A-29B, but they are all good
also Dave Garwood - Beaufighter

Payware aircraft -
Anything by Realair - eg their Spitfire
Anything by A2A - eg their P-47
Classics Hangar - FW190
Anything by Warbirdsim - eg P-51

Lastly, not a warbird, but the Aerosoft Beaver is great!
 
You mentioned carrier ops, if it is modern stuff you like for the flat tops a plane I rarely see mentioned is the Iris F-20. As stated on the website "The aircraft has been designed as a 'what if' product, based around the concept of the F-20 had it gone into service."

It is a very nice, very fast plane that is fully carrier ready. Comes with textures of several nationalities.

Scenery: PNW, REX2 and a lot of people don't mention it now, but FTX Australia is really excellent as well.

Aircraft:
WW2, my favourites are: RealAir Spit (MkIX and XIV), A2A Acusim Spit will be great and covers the MK1 and MkII I believe. JF BOB pack is good too and JF has the best Hurricane at the moment.

A2A B17 with Acusim and pretty much anything A2A is amazing, Vertigo Studios for US carrier planes and Classic Hangers for WW2 German (Fw190A only at the moment). Can't go wrong with anything from any of those.

FCS Lancaster is the best Lancaster at the moment, but isn't perfect and their Wellington is the only Wellington and although reasonable it does have some issues with the VC view.

I've heard good things about the Aerosoft Catalina, but I don't own it.

Modern: Anything from RAZBAM, Aerosoft F16, IRIS F14, A10 and Vulcan, Alphasim (now Virtavia) B1, Hawker Hunter, Tornado F3. UKMIL has a new Tornado GR4 just released as well.

There are plenty of online stores that will show you what's out there and places like SOH and the online review sites will give you a good idea on whether it's great or not.

I agree with the above comments.
You will absolutely love the A2A B-17 with its Accusim extension, and you will also love the A2A P-47 with its Accusim extension, but in comparison the other addons might become a bit... boring ;)
 
If you are interesting in carrier operation, I'd recommend you a freeware addon called AICarriers which allows you to place carrier fleet from the FSX menu wherever you want. Also, there is a fantastic Nimitz-class carrier availble and compatible with AI Carriers.

One advice from me. FSX has already a lot of content, even a out-of-box version. Try the missions, because they will present you the rich of this sim and many different sceneries. Once, you will know the default planes which can be very interesting, think about some good freeware and payware.

I think you can have accusimmed aircraft and still enjoy well done non accusimmed craft. Accusim is wonderful and I think it teaches those who don't have actual flight training to fly an airplane properly....ie smooth control movements, watching engine temps and generally improved situational awareness. Now when you fly other non accusim airplanes with that improved situational awareness your enjoyment of them will be improved too. Just because the engine won't die because because of poor managment doesn't mean you should use poor engine managment :mixedsmi:

That question is difficult to answer for somebody you don't know. Taste is something personal. I'm not a great fan of multi-engine aircraft. Therefore all aircraft I would advise you to fly are all single engine fighters.

Accusim is a very interesting add-on which adds to the experience. But as Pilottj already explained in the post above, there are many models without Accusim, which are as at least as interesting and demanding to fly.

The RealAir Spitfire should be flown by the book, otherwise the oil will end up the windscreen and the model suddenly has become a glider.

The same is valid for the Classics Hangar Focke-Wulf FW109-As. An error on selecting the correct tank sequence will result in a stopped engine and a lot of noise from dry-running pumps. Too much manifold pressure will result in engine damage. A propeller as described by an other designer in another thread, which can be used in full auto pitch mode and manual mode was already included in the FW190 models.

When you are looking for the ultimate models from still existing aircraft, you should try the Warbirdsim Mustangs. These are absolute spot-on models from warbirds which fly today.

When you want a multi engine aircraft next to the B-17; I have heard the Aerosoft Catalina is an extreme detailed model, which requires an extreme good pilot. As any error in engine management will result in problems.

As said its difficult to advise somebody as most of us have a different taste,

WH, just want to say it is great to see you here, and learn of your switch to FSX! The A2A B-17 sounds like a perfect fit for you, knowing your past interests!

Well, as you already know, the accusim B-17 is a must have. Also, in my opinion, the Classics Hangar Fw-190 late model Antons are a must. I also really like the vertigo studios stuff, VRS Superbug, and Aerosoft F-16. And the Warbirdsim P-51D part 1 restored is also must have.

I think OZ by FTX is a must have, especially for this price..
I never fly anywhere else.

Did somebody mention Mustangs? How about an Iwo version, John?
