One of the other military subjects on the plate is the Mustang. Currently flying like a spitfire as we had that at hand.

These are VERY WIP images. Interior wise we're at the code stage and feature testing stage. Exterior we're at the building-mapping stage. We've built it a little like a plastic model so gun bays are done , gear wells are done, engine bay is done etc etc.

Hope it is ok to link directly to our site. Only added the work in progress indicators everything else is straight from the sim. Also I run an I5 6600 3.3ghz +nv 1060 gtx + 32 gb ram... so the images are what they are. These are all on fbook, well they are bigger there. This is just a selection as the forum only allows 6 images. And there are 20 ... I am lazy. Turns out also I cant count...

The next ones were taken at biggin hill because raisins.

( not a super fan of the OTT depth of field the stock camera has in sim )

And finally the 10 different tyres ( we spell tyres correctly in Oz ) that were used on the P51. We are providing these as part of the paintkit same with the 3 different types of front nose radiator covers. We have some more features planned but will be keeping them a little hush hush.

Video will be in the comment below. Again facebook has more and bigger versions.

And lastly a simple video using the hangar animations from the sim. Real easy to make. If the fellas and fella-ettes from Asobo are reading this. Thanks for the showcase idea Just got to stop the camera flying through the engine !!

So I tried to embed the above video I really did...

This! Must be forbidden !

It is not nice to waylay innocent flightsimmers with such disclosed pictures unwarned !
If not pornography it sure is a genuine Torment of Tantalus ! That's what it is! Shame on you! :a1089::dizzy::biggrin-new::ernaehrung004: :applause::applause:\

( you're right about not being a fan of 'OTT depth of field' , it's terrible, ruins that piccie totally. You know what, lets forbid that too ;-)

Super! Can we have the two different canopy shapes according to which factory the aircraft was built in? Just love that kind of historic detail in a sim. Thanks.

Wow! I love the distortion of the interior when looking through the canopy from the outside. I sure hope MSFS soon becomes a fully fleshed out flight sim so I can say farewell to FSX and skip P3D.

Probably not. Never say never but the specifications/features/timeline/liveries/price point are pretty much locked in at present. We have got some more features to come but it is pretty complex enough as it is.

On a related note.. Chromate yellow/green/bare metal finish in the gear wells is one of the most hotly debated subjects I have ever researched.
More so than the "was the hurricane better than the spitfire ? " We know the answer to that one dont we Baz ? :a1310:

This looks amazing. And can we select Goodyear or Dunlops? LoL. I hope the paint kit will have weathering on a separate layer so we can have restored warbird repaints. For the gear well colors, you could look no further than the restored P-51B Lope's Hope or the P-51D Sierra Sue for accuracy. You've probably got that covered anyway. Any plans for a B model?

The interior confines of the P-51, gear wells included, were always a patchwork no matter what, throughout P-51 production. There was however more use of primer in late production (such as a P-51D-25-NT - which seems to be about the variant you have depicted here by the cockpit details) vs. early production (such as P-51D-10-NA).

This is what is true to original factory production:

- In early production, aluminum parts, such as skins and ribs, would be left unprimered if the Alcoa Alclad or Reynolds Pureclad finish remained largely untampered. They would also be left unprimered if spot-welding was required (such as landing gear doors, cowl panels and gun bay doors).
- Aluminum forgings and extrusions (such as brackets and stringers) were to receive a single coat of primer. Raw zinc chromate, which is yellow in color, was used to cover those aluminum parts. By late production, however, it was mandated that all aluminum parts receive a coat of zinc chromate (this showed up in P-51D-25-NT, P-51D-30-NT and P-51D-30-NA production)
- Magnesium forgings (such as brackets) were to receive two coats of primer. The second primer coat was tinted with black pigment to turn the zinc chromate green. This way they could ensure that there was complete two-coat coverage.
- During the production process, if a batch of raw zinc chromate ran out, and a batch of black-tinted (green) zinc chromate was on hand, they'd just use that on aluminum parts until another batch of raw (yellow) zinc chromate was at hand.

Because of all of this, there was always a patchwork of bare metal, yellow and greens throughout the airframe, not just the wheel wells (and true of B-25 and AT-6 production as well). The cockpit was painted interior green after the fuselage finished assembly, and was the only area inside of the aircraft given any solid coat of a single color (areas such as the wheel wells, gun bays, engine bay, etc. were not painted or primered after assembly). The spot-welded gun bay doors sometimes received a coat of raw (yellow) zinc chromate after completion, but sometimes remained bare metal depending on the pace of production. The landing gear doors were left bare metal throughout almost all P-51 production, until during P-51D-30-NA and P-51D-25-NT production when they finally started coating them in primer as well (raw zinc chromate).

Here are some photos of preserved examples, with the primer finishes left as they have been since original production.

P-51K-10-NT 44-12116 (this is the original finish as seen on the clam shell doors during WWII - the majority flying today, however, have the stainless steel rub plate, running down the middle, left bare so as to look nicer - only a couple very authentic restorations, Sierra Sue II and Lope's Hope 3rd, have the stainless rub plates authentically coated in zinc chromate as seen here)

P-51K-10-NT 44-12125 (the inner clam shell landing gear doors have been painted silver for display, while the landing gear wells remain preserved)

P-51D-25-NA 44-73349 (original, unrestored wheel wells - the only thing changed since production are the Swiss placards written in German)

A few other details about the primer finishes on P-51D/K's:

- The oil tank was never painted yellow. That is something that has only come along in non-authentic restorations. The oil tank, depending on the pace of production, was either given a coat of raw (yellow) zinc chromate, or just left bare metal.

- Like the oil tank, the header coolant tank was almost always left bare metal. If it was primered, it was given a coat of raw (yellow) zinc chromate.

- The engine bearers/mounts were always finished in black-tinted (green) zinc chromate, and were never left in single-coat raw (yellow) zinc chromate.

Here are a lot more photos that may be of use. These are of P-51D-25-NT 45-11513 (NZ2423), which when these photos were taken had never been restored. All of the internal primer and paint finishes are original to when it was manufactured in 1945. (The oddly-colored green paint on the clam shell landing gear doors was added while it was in service in New Zealand, where as you can see the raw (yellow) zinc chromate original factory finish below). Even the engine is original to the airframe when it rolled out of the Dallas NAA factory. A miner few details in the cockpit, such as the way the canopy emergency release handle is painted, were changed during its time with the RNZAF.

One of the ideas is to take the idea from the socata we did and make it a little less involved ( only providing restored or weathered instead of the 4 options ) to help here. We know there are people who like the "highly polished to an inch of it's life " and also the " this is a warbird and there are people shooting at us so no time to polish the plane " types. Of course we're the latter so you'll see those textures first. We've got something else planned in that area but it is up to MSFS to see if it can do it. FSX can so it should be able to.

As for colours we've gone with our gut here. I basically took a lot of the pics found online and the reference books, I have added up the chromate yellow Vs Chromate green VS Raw metal vs field modifications and then found the one that had the most reference. Democratic process if you will ! :) The good news is that if a person doesnt like our decisions then all the gearwell is on one layer. Simple enough to repaint it.

No plans at all to do the B.

Looking forward to see that fly! Have you followed the other John Smith aircraft?

I prefer the B and C Mustangs so I'd be a very happy wombat.
Of course, if John was feeling really magnanimous the original Allison Mustangs would earn him a lifetime supply of XXX or Vic or Redback.....or Carlton or even Noosa. :triumphant:

I've retired myself from flight sim developing, but I'd gladly assist wherever possible in any P-51 development for MSFS.

Another detail I thought I would mention too is the paint on the landing gear handle. From the factory, it was never painted overall red - that was something that only first took after WWII, in the 1950s when the cockpits of some in the USAF were painted black. Originally, from North American Aviation, the gear handles were always either painted entirely flat black (with white lettering), or interior green with only the rounded end painted red (with black lettering).

But, but, but........what about the long awaited P39Q?
Surely the most overlooked aircraft in the proper Flight Sim community.
:dejection:
