My second announcement

Alittle Humor For Ken

Always ask , Never Assume !

His request approved, the CNN News photographer quickly used a cell phone to call the local airport to charter a flight.

He was told a twin-engine plane would be waiting for him at the airport.

Arriving at the airfield, he spotted a plane warming up outside a hanger.

He jumped in with his bag, slammed the door shut, and shouted, 'Let's go'.

The pilot taxied out, swung the plane into the wind and took off.

Once in the air, the photographer instructed the pilot, 'Fly over the valley and make low passes so I can take pictures of the fires on the hillsides.'

'Why?' asked the pilot.

'Because I'm a photographer for CNN' , he responded, 'and I need to get some close up shots.'

The pilot was strangely silent for a moment, finally he stammered, 'So, what you're telling me, is . . . You're NOT my flight instructor?'

You've got great taste in aircraft Ken :applause:

Always thought the 310 was a sexy looking beast :jump:

I've never flown the 310 but logged a wee bit of time in the 320.

Pete.

Got great news from the bank today!

The loan was approved on very nice terms, which I can easily afford! Spoke with my A&P IA today at the Portales Airport, and he's all set to perform an annual inspection of the aircraft. Since the annual is due by end of March anyway, it made perfect sense to do the few extra steps for an annual, and it's a far superior form of pre-buy inspection.

Plus the current owner agreed to discount the price of the aircraft $1,500 extra to cover the cost of the annual inspection. He's planning to fly it to Portales where my friend (an MEI-I) and I will fly it and that way I can gain my own personal impressions of its flight characteristics, and he can add his own inputs also. He has many hours on 310's so it will be a really good second opinion.

Insurance and the T-hangar are already set up. So, if the annual comes up reasonably clean, I should be the proud owner of this airplane by end of February!

Oh, and Willy, since the Skyhawk is fully paid for, I'm keeping it. So, I'll have the Skyhawk and the 310R. Since the Skyhawk costs about five times less money per flight hour to operate, that will be where I put the bulk of my personal training hours in, including maintaining my instrument rating.

I'll use the 310R primarily for cross country trips. Most frequently this will serve my Grace Flight medical flights. The extra payload of the 310R means I won't have to turn down any of the patients due to too many people coming with them, or too much baggage. Plus, having the de-ice equipment means I'm far less likely to have to cancel the flight in winter time due to poor weather -- something I have had to unfortunately do several times on these medical charity flights in the past with the Skyhawk.

Cheers,

Ken

Beware, they're almost as bad. 310's are known for tricky-dicky gear systems.
Needs good TLC. Hell, we just rerigged a 310's nosegear. Owner said it keeps going left.

Totaly true! There are two things you must do with respect to 310 gears. First, make sure your A&P takes absolutely no short cuts with the gear servicing required at each annual inspection. Any shortcuts is money stupidly saved. The vast majority of gear incidents with 310's have been the result of gear servicing not in compliance with the Cessna spec's.

The other deal is never brake to a stop in a turn! In fact, that's true to any nose gear aircraft. Even for the Skyhawk you don't want to do that, but for the 310 it's more important. That means you have to plan your turn with good power and never box yourself into a situation where you have to panic stop while in the turn.

In fact, the same is true for the C-130.

Good inputs, appreciate it, brother! :icon29:

Congratulations Ken with your new 310. That is an awesome plane and I had a few trips in one. Enjoyed it very much.

Let's see, we have now over 18,000 members, to raise a million for your runway by your house, it would only take about $56/member......

Great news on the 310, Ken. God bless you, sir, on your Grace Flight work! I wish you all the best, always, Ken..:medals::medals::medals::guinness::icon29::guinness::icon29:

Thanks for your 25yrs of service to your country Ken! Best wishes to you in retirement. :medals::ernae:
Nice looking plane too. Hope things work out for you regarding the plane!

I can't begin to tell you how happy I am for you Ken, wow! :applause::salute::applause:

It is really good news that you are still doing the Grace Flights, my hat is off to you and yours. God will bless you with even more if you keep it up. :engel016:

All our good wishes ride with you 24/7, you know that..!:medals:

The plane was brought to Portales today and I got a chance to fly it. The avionics work flawlessly and the plane flies great! Some cosmetic and minor issues for the A&P to work on but all initial looks show positively. My A&P will perform a full annual inspection on it before I agree to purchase it. But, so far it is looking great!

Ken

Have they got those pesky Continental 6 cylinder engines in them.....that are always a pain in the backside to start cold.

Ken I am very happy for you it sounds like things are coming together very nicely. That 310 is one very lucky aircraft, I understand good owners are sometimes hard to find! :mixedsmi:

Hats off to you on the Grace Flight medical flights, having worked with the Childrens Wish Foundation here I know how much that kind of thing means to families and how personally rewarding it is.

Ken,

Good luck with nailing the 310....I suppose after I finish my instrument ticket I will pursue a complex and twin rating. We have a Piper Apache here for training (well we did, until two of the instructors brought it in gear up and managed to touch the props on the runway before realizing what they were doing-- the engines are being overhauled now).

You know, yesterday I took my aircraft out and flew it up to Hernando County to visit a buddy, then popped back to my home airport...I then drove downtown to look at an M1911A1 .45 ACP I wanted to buy (too pricey, I think I can bring them down another $30 or so -- and it's not an original but a Springfield Armory current production).

After I got home I realized...there just aren't too many places in the world where you can fly your own airplane, and buy your own guns. Freedom's a great thing isn't it?

Anyway....let us know about the Cessna. And you're right...the 172 being paid for makes it worth holding onto even with the annuals and maintenance. Cheap to fly for training and it's a wonderful aircraft.

I'm not sure if anyone mentioned it.... but isn't it a bit odd... think about it... Cessna 310... re-arrange those numbers, and it's C-130????

:jump:

Never thought of that! Considering I flew C-130's for so many years, I should have! :icon_lol:
