Nanwalek Crash!

I saw this on the Blancolirio Channel yesterday. Tragic accident that took the lives of the pilot and one of the two passengers onboard. The airplane was a Cessna 207 (the stretch version of the 206) and the pilot was an accomplished Bush Pilot and had flown into that strip in the past so he was familiar with the type of approach. Just as he was over the outer edge of the village he spotted a dog on the runway and aborted the landing but rather than flying over the runway and turning back to the right to setup for a second attempt he turned left into rising terrain and the result was a stall spin into terrain. Juan Brown used MSFS 2020 to reenact the situation the pilot found himself in, in an attempt to test several other possible go-arounds.

I just flew a short hop from Seldovia (PASO) around the point and into Nanwalek (KEB) to see for myself and it is a little tricky but I didn't have the 207, three passengers, luggage and a dog on the runway at the last second. In hindsite it's easy to question why he didn't just continue down the runway and go around to the right to try again. He'd flown there before, knew the area, so he made a decision he must have thought was correct.

the Blancolirio channel and Juan Brown provide the best air accident and mishap reporting I've seen. He has a depth of knowledge and experience, along with his associates, that gives the best insights and clarity - even in early assessments, and the channel always follows up with accurate details and any needed corrections in subsequent
reporting.
