NAS Agana, Guam

Navy Chief

Senior Member
BRAC closed this base in 1995. I was there from December 93 to October 94, when the squadron I was assigned to (VQ-1) was moved to NAS Whidbey Island, WA.

I have had these pictures on my wall for some time. I used my digital camera to take snapshots of them. Thought I would post them. I doubt you will see these actual pictures on the net.

Cool pictures NC. Good quality too. Ashame they closed the base. Looked up some current photos of it on Google and does not look like it has faired well since closing.

Roadburner, it most definitely has not. The ironic thing is, the Guam govt. was so anxious for the Navy to vacate the base because they had big plans for reuse of the buildings and the property in general. There was talk of turning the barracks into low rent housing.

They (the Guam govt.) have, instead, let the former Naval Air Station deteriorate into a shambles. It is so sad. Contrast that to what Jacksonville, FL has done with the former NAS Cecil Field. At least THEY have reformed the base into something substantial.

NC,
The Marine Corps is vacating their bases in Okinawa and moving them to Guam. Not sure they would use NAS Agana to replace MCAS Futenma, but it would make sense.

When I was on float aboard the USS Bellau Woods we got a few days of liberty on Guam. Really nice beaches and Taco Bell...I had been on Okinawa for 6 months and eating at Taco Bell was a treat for an 18 yr old LCpl! :jump:

They did the same thing with the housing at Andersen South, where I lived. It was a very nice condo style housing that was typhoon proof. Now it is overrun and they use it for "urban fighting" training.

Cecil Field looks pretty good. Granted I never saw it in it's original state. Boeing, and Fedex seem to keep the place up fairly nice though (and I think Embry Riddle uses it too?)... I think that is what always happens whenever we vacate and turn over bases in foreign countries. It is just ashame.. At first I thought it was pictures of the base that is over in Guam now, but after doing a little research and reading the history of it I saw that wasn't the case. I do not think anymore with environmental laws the way they are we will ever see bases turned over like that again in the future. Will just become "federal preserves" or something of that nature.

My son-in-law is with VQ-1! My daughter was based TDY on Guam a few years back. They also spent a few years at Whidbey.

I'd like to see someone do a photorealistic scenery package of Guam.

Well ... maybe I can help you out !

I also wished someone would do a photo Guam scenery, and when I got tired of waiting ...I made my own.

I hoped someday to upload it, but I never felt it was totally ready. I need to write up a readme file with all the credits, but never got around to it. I have had the pleasure of downloading gigs of other people's work and I have never released anything myself.

I have noticed some people can be brutal if an upload is not exactly right, in their opinion. So I have delayed releasing this project. But what the heck, I think some people may appreciate it, flaws and all.

Basically, the only problem is the AFX files are not perfect, but I welcome any one to make better ones to use with the scenery.

Bone - I think you volunteered to be my test subject :icon_lol:

I would like to send you my scenery files and let you have a look to see what you think.

I'd be glad to sign up for the job, that picture looks pretty good. Falcon409 or Shylock are both pretty darn good at making AFX's, maybe they would be interested in tweeking it. I'll PM you my email.

NAS Whidbey Island IS the most beautiful place I have ever lived! Your son in law is most fortunate to be there, and be part of VQ-1!

Is Whidbey Island nice? Never been there, and been avoiding it cause I figured it wouldn't be a good tour.. If it is nice then it might be worthwhile going to check out. Always wanted to work on EA-6B's, and with orders choices twindling I would at least like to find a nice place to go. Most people say it is cold as can be up there though.

My father and uncle (mothers brother-in-law) both served with VQ-1 around 77' through 80'. My father also met & started dating my mother on Guam, lucky enough for me.

My Dad still has super 8 film reels of all sorts of things that he saw and did while stationed there.

Take orders to Whidbey!!!!!! Once you get there, you'll find out why so many guys "homestead" there.

Does it get cold? Yes, but not that bad. The wind gets pretty fierce though. Yes, it rains frequently. But everything is so green ALL year round. It is truly God's country.
