NAS Key West Scenery

Just a heads up that the MAIW have some new scenery. Although intended for FS9, I and others have found many of their sceneries can work out of the box in FSX. Took all the bits for KNQX (have not tried the others for El Centro or Oceana yet) and it has really improved the look of the place (courtesy of John Stinstrom's talents). Didn't add the MAIW AI or traffic as I already have my own 1960's Cold War AI (mostly Alphasim stuff) working the area. Be sure to de-activate any dulplcate AFCAD/ADE airport flies first. Check it out.

Am glad you posted about this, because I have a question about using MAIW in FSX. Years ago, I attempted doing so, and could never figure out how to do it.

Yesterday I saw a post about a new MAIW package with VFA-106. That got my attention, because I was one of the original members of VFA-106 when the squadron "stood up" at NAS Cecil Field. I remember when the squadron had ZERO aircraft, and had a special ceremony when the initial aircraft arrived.

Is it difficult to make it work in FSX? I have known John Stinstrom for several years, although have not communicated with him in some time.

Avoid that new installer ther is a notice at Simflight.com, app it has a trojan attached.

Cecil is my "main" NavAir ops center in MS land for testing before heading out to the boat with something new. Interesting to hear you were based there. Have flown (as PIC) over/near it in a Piper Warrior but never been on the base.

Re MAIW scenery, while there is a detailed manual for converting it to FSX, you don't necessarily have to follow it. It was painstakenly done but assumes you want/need all of the MAIW bases ever made and all of the AI. I commend the author for writing it.

What I do is manually install a new MAIW add on to a new folder and then pick out the bits I am interested in e.g., the AFCAD/ADE bgl's and associated files are often all you need. Did this for example with KNBC Beaufort and Seymour Johnson AFB. Also worked for Key West.

Not sure though if I have tried MAIW's Cecil scenery or if there is any. I did try John Stinstrom's KVQQ scenery for FS9 but it didn't work well at all in FSX. What I did instead was modded the stock Cecil AFCAD (I use cement or concrete runways in Florida as the sun there turns the asphalt white pretty fast) and then added Jim Dhaenens's USN hangars using the Library Object placement tool in ADE as well as John's military ground service equipment. Result looks pretty good. I have 1960's AI working the area (including at nearby KNIP) and doing cats/traps off the AS Big E parked off of Mayport.

Big MAIW user/supporter and have most of the FS9 scenery working in FSX. A few FS9 vs. FSX elevation/alignment and alpha texture issues with the lights/trees are the most common port over problems. I generally just remove those .bgl's and live with it. The NAS Key West scenery fits right in, but I did notice a few landclass differences as I have a fuel farm in the "water" in FSX. No issue for me as I'm normally focused on flying a fast overhead break most of the time after tangling with the VFC-111 Tigers. I did have some issues with El Sweato (Centro) with the airport image background, it's flipped in FSX.

The FSX install guide is a must, but after you get a few packages in, you can develop your own system. I recommend using a temp folder for the installer, then manually moving the files over to FSX.

Navy Chief/expat,
I was down the road from you guys at NAS Jax for most of my Navy time. There is no Cecil Field scenery for FSX that I am aware of yet, although MAIW traffic do visit VQQ (FL Orions package).

I may give the MAIW packages another try. I get confused, trying to pick/choose different files. So used to just installing the scenery, and activating it.

I did work with John Stinstrom, during the development of his NAS Cecil Field scenery for FS9. I provided a lot of pictures from the base, i.e. barracks, NAS Chapel, Medical Clinic, etc... John did a marvelous job in recreating the buildings at Cecil. Since that time, a large percentage of the actual buildings have been torn down. I was there many years ago, and it was so sad to see all the changes. NAS Cecil Field, at one time, was the Master Jet Base for the Navy on the east coast. I was assigned there from 1981-1990. Was gone a lot (detachments & deployments), but when actually on the base, I enjoyed it. Most of the pictures that I had provided to John Stinstrom for the scenery project were taken by Capt. John Leenhouts, USN, (Ret.). Here is some information about him, and a cool video of what he does now:

John Leenhouts retired from the United States Navy after 28 years of service. During that time he logged more than 8,000 hours piloting more than 35 different types of military, antique, and civilian aircraft. He has the distinction of being the leading Carrier Aviator; having accumulated 1,645 traps or landings on 16 different carriers. Since his retirement, John has been volunteering in the community, often juggling projects for several organizations simultaneously. He has volunteered for Daniel, Dreams Come True, National Multiple Sclerosis Society of Northeast Florida, the American Heart Association and others. John owns an antique bi-plane and has given rides in it to children with terminal illnesses as part of their last wish. He also has been involved with the Fly and Ride event in conjunction with the NAS Air Show. In 2002, he chaired and helped implement the Daniel Bike to School Motorcycle Ride, which continues today as Rock and Ride, a major fundraiser with more than 12,000 riders.

I was on the Sara at NS Mayport from 79-80 before we went to the yards in Philly. Used to watch A-7s, hoovers and Orions doing bounce hops ( touch and goes) at the airfield there. Would like to see a good NAS Cecil Field and NAS Mayport to go with NAS JAX. Too bad all we have for freeware US carriers are the Nimitz class, would love to see some Forrestal class boats in FSX.

LOL!! Well I too try to distract my attention away from these anomalies. However, the fuel farm needs a bit of a landfill project, once I figure out how to replace water with terra firmma using ADE! There are also trees with reflective rectangles surrounding them which will need to be pruned, once I figure out which is the offending bgl (or maybe alter the alpha value in the texture).

Anyway it has a nice look to it. Part way assigning October 1962 Cuban Missle crisis AI aircraft. There was an unusually diverse and colorful collection of Skyrays, Demons, RF-8 Crusaders, a very new F-4B squadron (VF-41) and 30 USAF F-104's sharing what must have been a very crowded, busy, and stressed out ramp.
