NASA WB-57F Canberra by "Piglet"

A post I posted over in the FS 2002/2004 section, but this model also works perfectly in FSX!

Other Thread:http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?t=15915

If you haven't downloaded Piglet's WB-57F yet, your missing out!

Only 2 left flying in the world today, NASA operates both as high-altitude weather research aircraft, cruising up to 60,000 feet collecting data on clouds and the earth's atmosphere.

Download it here: http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/syb.cgi?section=military&file=rb57_pak.zip

NASA's WB-57F website: http://jsc-aircraft-ops.jsc.nasa.gov/wb57/index.html

Track the "real" one here: http://flightaware.com/live/flight/NASA926

Its a great plane to fly in MFS, however, any way to fix this:

On autopilot at altitudes above about 20,000 feet, it has tendency to oscillate with pitch, going between 500 FPM up and then down. Any way to edit the cfg file to fix this and have it cruise straight and level at altitude?

Anyway to get it to cruise at 50,000+ with ease as it does in real life?

Thanks Piglet for a truly rare and well designed aircraft!

Mmm, I really enjoy that aircraft. I worked for several years with a research group which used the WB-57's and ER-2's as platforms for our particle counting instrumentation.

Glad you like the '57's:wavey:
Isn't there autopilot settings in the .cfg file? Can't remember which app I used for airfile work.
Maybe one day I'll convert them to FSX native, and take a new look at the airfiles stuff.

Yes.. I like the look of that ive been a great follower of yours... cutting my teeth on your pc 7 lol in swiss pro X, screens look great of the real aircraft, unfortunately i'm not a high altitude flyer but i know its one of extremely high standard both model and VC wise. Best wishes Tim!! Plus please do some Dassault or Breguet aircraft, i'm going mad trying to do up that old Super Etendard Modernise (Roland Laborie) model from fs 2002/04 ..Into an Acceleration compatable VC / Carrier aircraft! The model is great but the bloody VC is driving me mad, and the nose oleo is smashing straight into the deck upon launch from the catapult on the default Carrier and addon Clemenceau lol !!!! driving me wild :( best wishes Pete

Piglet! your awesome.. thank you.. Would you mind terribly if i had a go at the autopilot problems??

Warchild,
Sure go for it!
Heck , while yer askin', wanna see why my PC-7 flies like poop?!?:wavey:
I just went thru my HD's trying to find the RB/WB-57's. Hopefully I recovered everything.

The problem is with Indicated Airspeed in FSX, way to fast at low level quickly dropping off as you climb and does not stay somewhere near True Airspeed, this is what messes up the autopilot and causes the porpoising as it is trying to maintain the airspeed but will eventualy give up

Definately. I'd love to to work on a PC-7.. I've had your 57's for years. Love em to death, and i just downloaded the install from the link above so it's a fresh copy..
The PC-7 aerodynamically isnt too awfully different than the PC-6 so it'll be a nice experience for me :D..

That sounds about right.. There are these tables in the air file that deals with power curves. you cant normally edit them or even see the actual tables unless you dump it out to a text file.. Now, i'm not saying i'm an expert or genius when it comes to power curves, but i'll be looking into it and doing what i can..

The WB-57 is by far the best looking of all the Canberras in the world, because it simply does everything right in terms of looks, compared to its english ancestor. Sleek nose, fighter-style canopy, perfect looking engines and sexy wings.

Every time I think I have collected all the Piglets, something else cool pops up.

I just tried tha Canberra in FSX and it flies fine, but it doesn't have any sound.

The sound.cfg is aliased to "b737_400\sound".

I assume I need to alias that to something else. How do I find the names of others to alias it to?

Just put the sound file from any other aircraft in as long as you think it sounds like the real one's no problem!!

Thanks Peter and Roger! I used the default 737-800 folder and it works great.

:D :D...

there's a pdf version as well with illustrations.. I love what it says about maximum altitude: "Well above 60,000 feet".
So far ive gotten the plane to go up to .883 mach and i can get it to 50000 feet, but i need to do a lot more tweaking.. i wanna see 70000 feet at an indicated 200 knots.. I realize thats probably a little closer to .9 macch but eh.. what the hell.. Piglet did a damned fine job on the first FDE. The system he used to generate it though is what let him down.. At least thats my assumption.. I've also got to work with stall speeds.. notice in that manual the maximum speed for sea level.. It's a weird combination. The TF-33 doesnt like real high, and the wings dont like real low.. makes it fun :D

Piglet's aircraft, cruising at FL550 somewhere above Austria... (sorry, I forgot to select the NASA one :p )
