'NASCAR Announces New Point System'

Yep, interesting. It's different, but not so much as to make a huge amount of difference, which was intentional. Just a bit simpler and easier to understand, but rewards the same type of performance and consistency.

What I found more interesting is the fact that drivers have to declare which series they want to earn points in. A cup driver won't win the Busch series title this year! Or Nationwide, rather, or whoever the sponser is this year.
 
so far i like the new changes,points,and the qualifying being based on practice speed rather and the "pickle pull"...rainout line up being again practice speed rather than points unless practice is rained out as well..but one of the changes i like most is that the "splitter" is gone...i hated that thing...first the wing and now the splitter..and they have said that down the road..(2013 possibly) the cars will look more like the badgeing...read on jayski just today that the ford mustang is supposed to LOOK like a mustang for 2013

just a side note..i watched all ove barrett-jackson...they had a car on there that was a "custom"...it had a small splitter on it..with the tighteners and everything...so i looked at more cars online and found several "custom cars" that the guys put splitters on them to make them look "tough" like a nsacar stock car i guess.........cracks me up

I highlighted the part in red because that is what it is all about.

Points changes are OK - we'll see how it goes - it'll probably tend to bunch cars up more for getting into the chase and does reward winning during the regular season a bit more. Just so they never go back to that old fogie dinosaur of a year-long points system where a driver could dominate early in the year and then just "points race" enough during the latter part to maintain and win the championship - Earnhardt Sr was a master at that.

New Cup cars look good Ed et al, and you can look for record speeds too. Nationwide cars will be just another COT POS, watch.

I'm all for the new points format save for leaving in the Chase. Do away with that 900-lb gorilla and I'll be happy. It would have been nice to have seen them award 5 points for every top qualifier, with an additional 5 points awarded for the driver who accumulated the most qualifying points at the end of the season.

Watching the 24 hours of Daytona now, the Synergy GT team is based at VIR. The DP and GT series comes here May 15th (qualifying) and 14th (250-mile race).

Why not just keep it REALLY simple and award x number of points to the winners and so on down the field???
Most points earned = championship title.
As for qualifying, all cars run and the quickest group (what is a field these days, around 40?) start at the front as in most proper forms of racing.
I suppose a 'Top Ten Shoot Out' (as used in V8 Supercars) could be adopted to determine the starting positions for the 10 quickest cars but I (just me, myself) regard that as just another PT Barnum exercise.
IMNSHO both NASCAR and F1 seem to be competing for the title of the most stupid qualifying sessions ....... :173go1:

those two qual;ifying styles are totally differant..nascar goes one car at atime and F1 uses a multi car format?...although the nascar trucks will use the multi car format at selected tracks..which im on a personal rampage(?) to stop...i send weekly notes to the fan councel to ask the to poll us on it...it stinks...one car at a time is best...but the idea of going on the practice times not pickle pull is a great idea....make you accualy USE practice...ole dale would have hated this deal...he sat out so many second sessions..he wouldnt be able to do that anymore
