NAVAL OPS: gp183601's USS Oriskany and Midway

Have been having just the greatest time with these two wonderful - possibly unappreciated - additions to the FSX carrier fleet. They are just so well done and give one a chance to use period correct aircraft that you could not before. I am using them in three different formats: 1) AI Carriers, 2) with Carrier Tracks (they are constantly moving on tracks I made with escorts on Yankee Station) and 3) I have converted the models to scenery bgl's, made hi and low airports with ADE and have period correct deployment squadron aircraft parked and flying on and off the deck. Great to watch the AI. Fun to find the moving carriers in the dark with AI radar and RFN TACAN gauges.

What would be ideal would be if the angle deck Oriskany could be simply changed into other Essex boats by using repaints - essentially changing the hull number. I know the purists will say no carrier sister ship is like another - very true - but for the fun involved it would be worth. I think, however, Gary said the hull number is in the model so no quick way to do this just by adjusting the textures.

What would also be great is if there could be a clear deck model of both the Oriskany and Midway, so you could fly a number of historically correct.

In any event, this a big thanks again for all the enjoyment provided.

Did anything smaller than the Forrestals see Turkeys or T-45s on their decks?

If not, this would only leave the F-18 as an option for cheapskate pilots.

Don't ya just love carrier flying :encouragement: .. that is one Demon screen

Yes!! I lifted some of Navy81's artwork (his F3H Oriskany paint here in the library) and merged it onto Pierre Lheureux's very weathered/dirty paint from another squadron. Still need to splice "USS Oriskany" on the fuselage. Hump backed Scooters though don't fit the period correctly.

I am slowly building out AI - and flyable a/c -for 1960's Oriskany and Midway deployments in SEA. What is great about this period is you can get deployments with six different aircraft.

E.g., http://navysite.de/cv/cv34deploy.htm

Ditto for the Midway in 1965.

JBD's not big enough for the Tomcats, T-45's didn't hit the fleet till '92. Should a few free port-overs to fly, or at least Piglet's A-1.

Yes, this period before the "modern era" (always a subjective term, but e.g. Tomcat, Hornet et al) is of interest to SOH members here and is interesting because 1) as mentioned, the variety of aircraft on a deployment IRL (consolidating, multi-role designs and budgets today make the "Fabulous Fifties" borne aircraft seem by comparison, well, fabulous) AND there are a large number of FSX and easy to port planes to fly:

A-1 - Piglet's
A-3 AS
A-4 Virtavia and Razbam
RA-5C - AS
A-6 AS and Razbam
A-7 Razbam and IRIS
F3H AS
F-4D AS/Virtavia
F-4B and J AS/Virtavia
F-8 AS
S-2/E-1/C-1 SOH

This is why I am so grateful to Gary for the Oriskany and Midway - also because they add a lot to SEA ops, together with the French free Vietnam scenery and AI packages. A Hancock, Intrepid, or Bonnie Dick, Essex class variation of the "O" might not (?) need to be done from scratch (maybe it would . .). There is a Kitty Hawk I think on the way with the Aerosoft F-14 so the one last gap IMHO would be a Forrestal class carrier done to this kind of very high standard.

Thanks again!

Not deployed as we all know but I have a photo of two Tomcats on the USS Coral Sea in the late 1980s - sorta cross deck operation or a feasible study.

Very interested in these two beauties unfortunately when I try loading the Beta models in AI carriers I't kills me on frames & by the time I'm on deck I'm virtually at a standstill even looking at them nearly causes my poor PC to come to a grinding halt mind you that was a BETA release! anyone else finding this issue I think I may have bought it up already on the other thread a while ago???

expat,

Hope you post pics of option#3 mentioned in your 1st post. Looking at doing the same with a period AI set up for SE Asia. Big MAIW user/supporter and normally keep my FS AI modern, but after seeing the Vietnam projects looked at going "retro" in this part of the FS world. Great stuff coming out for the retro military AI movement on MAIW.

Just catching up on the forum after being away for the past few days. The missus booked me on an F-4 phantom simulator experience as a birthday treat. She pottered about with the kids in the rain whilst I sat in a warm cockpit living out boyhood dreams!

You are correct the hull number on Oriskany is hard coded. The model was created by someone else so when I picked it up as a request to get it ported into FSX I only did some minor tweaks and left in the hard coded pennant numbers...but fear not! I am working on a new set of Essex class boats....the pennant number will not be hard coded so can be changed!

Clear deck Midway is on its way I've added a few A-6's so if you use AI carriers you can now configure between clear deck, A-6's and/or F-4s and A-7s. Just need to package it up.

still on a learning curve so may do something different for Essex class and Coral Sea

Cheers
Gary

Yes, I was AIMD on USS Coral Sea in the late 80's, VF-101 Tomcats would do carrier quals on board, seen it many times off the coast of Va. and N.C.

I hope you did a lot better than me in the F-4 simulator. I couldn't judge depth properly when looking out and also touched down with the brakes locked on. Even so I did have fun. The Victor simulator was even better 35,000 feet up and all 4 engines flamed out (Not me, a simulator power fault)

Thought I'd resurrect this post since it has been over a year to see if Gary might have an update to his work on additional Essex class carriers.
