Need help finding info on WW2 Naval accident

Years ago, a friend of mine told me about a tragic US Naval accident involving (if memory serves me) two US Navy ships that mistakenly fired upon each other in the fog? I think there might have been a German ship involved as well, but not sure. I don't remember if both US Navy ships sank as a result of this incident, but the casualty count was high.

Thanks in advance. NC

A squadron of four stacker destroyers were running at full speed and ran onto the rocky coast of California at full speed....eight of them were wrecked and the wrecks can still be seen.

There were several occasions of "friendly fire" during the war...i will ask around among those that may know for you.

cheers

Navy Chief,

There was also a supposed incident with the USS Willard Keith (DD-775) off the coast of California, where it supposedly damaged and sank a possible American submarine that they detected on Radar. The sub never surfaced, and there is still speculation, based on the testimony of those aboard the vessel, that the Willard Keith sank it in a friendly-fire incident.

Thanks all.

I most likely have the story wrong. Isn't the first time. If I figure it out, I'll let ya know. NC
