Need recommendations for inexpensive laptop....

I will soon be looking to buy an inexpensive laptop. I won't need it for gaming, or anything memory-intensive of that sort.

I mostly will use if for email, downloading FS files (for transfer to my pc), and to watch an occasional Youtube video and play music, etc.....

There are hundreds of models out there, but thought perhaps someone here might have some suggestions?

Am not wanting to spend much. Maybe no more than $300?

Thanks.

The asus EEE 1000he would fit the bill perfectly. :)

With shipping you can get it for just under 400 bucks. I have its predecessor, the 1000h. It is one SOLID little notebook (netbook really). I consider it to be one of my best purchases ever.

I just bought (last week) an Acer Aspire One netbook (AO205). My regular laptop is an Acer, and I've found it to be a good computer, so I thought I would try this one after reading some good reviews. It's great! It's fast, a 10.1" screen and only half the size of my regular laptop. And a normal 6 hour battery life in use. Only a 1024x768 rez, but I'm not using it for high end gaming. $350 for the newest model.

I would suggest a Netbook of some type (I'm not pushing Acer) as they are so much more convenient for travel, and the price is right. My friend bought the Asus for his wife and she loves it. :)

There is a very small new HP out that is in Walmart and Costco. You can also purchase it from Verizon. Some have a built in web card. They are at $300.00.

Oh! Better mention that the netbooks do not come with a CD/DVD ROM drive. Mine has 3 USB ports, built-in wireless networking, bluetooth, VGA monitor port, multi-in one card reader, dedicated SD card slot and a 160 gig HD. And I already have an external DVD ROM drive, so I can load software up just by plugging it into the USB port. But if you need an internal drive, might want to look for something else.

I've been using a Dell netbook for six months. (Some good deals at Dell Outlet store online.) If you don't think of them as replacing your main computer, netbooks are great. One difference between models is keyboard; some are near full-size, others are squished. I wouldn't want to write a book on the squished kind, but for web, email, and light writing they're excellent. Mine has WinXP Home and Ubuntu 9.04 installed side-by-side. My main desktop is 100% WinXP, but for my netbook the default OS is Ubuntu. I mention this, not to complain about Windows, but if you want to save some money, you don't HAVE to buy Windows. Ubuntu is free, very friendly, and it will do everything a netbook is good for.

Before you put money down, go to a store and see whether you really want something this small. I like mine because it is small and very light, but -- again -- I wouldn't use one to write a book.

I've heard some very good reports on the Samsung netbook NC10.

I've had one of these for about six months - great little machine, terrific battery life if that is an issue. It comes, as most netbooks do, with XP, which is just fine.

You definately want WinXP or Win7 on a laptop. (I do not know much about Win7, but it seems to run faster then vista).

I had vista on my new laptop a couple of years ago, and it took forever to bootup, and would stall continuously as it would 'gather its senses' which was always..

After having WinXP installed (it took a tech an entire day of searching the web, and alot of money from me to get this done, as MS had designed XP out of hardware to keep people buying vista), I booted it up..

Bing!!! Fast like you cant imagine! XP literally through itself on the screen! I couldnt believe it. I freaked the line of customers out at the Geek Squad center in Best Buy. Great laptop now. It can run FSX now with low sliders, and FS2004 runs brilliant on it.

Make sure you get a lappie with WiFi so if you are in a free WiFi coffee shop, you can link into the web.

Lastly.. My sister came over the other day and showed me pictures on her new Apple Macbook Pro 17inch. Goodness. What a polished little laptop. We ran the slide show through their media center like program called front seat. Plays music. Has a little remote for controlling it that looks like a small iPod, lol.. I want one bad...
