Yea,I moderate a very large forum....it's like a kindergarten class sometimes but we keep a tight rein on things there.

I agree. Civility and manners seem to be lost and gone the way of the dodo bird.

The anonymity is definitely part of the problem. I keep running into people who insist the ONLY way they can exercise their First Amendment right to free speech is to anonymously degrade someone they've never met on a net forum in a consequence-free environment. Civility aside, these people obviously don't know how vulnerable they are to retaliation (legal and extra-legal) from someone who knows how to go about it. I went to school with people who are now in government or the private tech sector and I WOULD NOT mess with them online for every tea leaf in Bejing. It's actually safer to insult them to their faces and take the fist to the face.

I also put part of the blame on a celebrity and political culture that considers a scorched earth policy the first, best, and only option. High school mentality on steroids delivered via satellite and on cable tv.

Funnily enough, I like this place because I can be myself here. And I can be just about everything from standard happy to abyssimally cynical, depending on my daily mood. But I'm always civilized...or at least trying to be.

If you want pure, unlimited happiness, try the Simviation forums. There's nice guys/gals there for sure, but believe me, the "forced friendliness" attitude is sickening after a while. At least it was for me.

Don't let negative write ups, negative comments, negative news, negative-anything-negative ruin your day....

I know. Heres the ones you need to know.

1. Do not talk about /B/
2. Do NOT talk about /B/
34. There is porn of it, no exceptions.
34.1. If a Porn of something cannot be found, /B/ will make it.

Rules 1 and 2 brake down like this. They both mean that you're not allowed to talk about the site or a person. There changes of the first 2 rules of fight club.

and have seen a few things
been on forums for even longer
the one thing i try to keep is a sense of humor
from time to time we all have our off days
and typing on a forum is one of the most unpersonal things
im in a room alone, its hard to say what you mean
exactly and see others expressions
negativism well that is one thing i do not like
just because its negative
it serves no purpose
the best that i can come up with is i look in a mirror
and if i do not crack up laughing theirs a problem
rule #1 laugh at yourself

why do we come here every day?
bottom line is we have certain things in common
I guess flight sims?
but there are many flight sim forums
but we need our daily dose of something else
we want to be people, ourselves
we are all different and in person would probably not get along
but we have a unique forum here i believe
actually my wife thinks its crazy and dangerous to talk to people on the internet:isadizzy: Henry what are you doing
most people i see here i see most days
and in general i know you or at least i see what you post
and can get a good idea of what you are like
and in general you post with constant ideas and personality's
there is nothing like having fun here
we post our jokes we post our music etc etc
being negative to someone or taking a pot shot at someone
i can do to my friends who i know personaly
but it can be misleading to someone who just sees the typed word

oh and Bill i forgot to tell you when i look in the mirror and laugh
it your picture stuck to the glass
see i can get away with laughing with my friends
but it could also be a big problem
when they do not know me well
it could be a nasty situation
my point just think what you type
one may see one thing one may see another

Henry, I think you've hit on something in your first paragraph. I think most of us have been here for quite sometime and outside of the mutual love of aviation and flightsims, we've lent each other a helping hand, listened to the highs & lows of life, and generally shared in good news or bad. Despite the varied backgrounds that we hail from, it's being someplace where no matter how simple the question or wide-ranging the opinion, you can post without the animosity that thrives across the virtual landscape.

I think it speaks well of the SOH community that it's comfortable here.
