Neighbors dog dies in Memphis Heat

FSX68

Banned
I have a neighbor across the street from me that has 3 Lab dogs. The owners both work and so they stake one young lab out side on a chain with a pot of water.
All was well yesterday as the sun rose and cast a bit of shade for this dog under a tree. Later, in the afternoon, as the sun traveled west, the shade went away and so
the poor dog was left in the direct sunlight. It got up to 100 deg with 120 heat index here. I was unaware of the situation till I noticed that dude comes home and is
hovering over a motionless dog. It then dawned on me what had happened. He pick up his little lab and was holding it in a hug and was walking around sobbing in disblief.
I saw his next door neighbor come over to comfort dude. Dude fell to his knees sobing all the while. Then, dude takes his dog to the back area of his yard and lays it down, soon
after, he buried it in his back yard.

I've seen this dog staked out in the same place day after day and when dude and his wife come home he/she would immediately recognize them and jump up and down
and the wife would unhook the dogs chain and it would go in their house. Now with the oppressive heat, I would of thought that dude would of either left his dog in a better
area with constant shade or left him in the house. They have two other dogs that they do leave in their house. I don't know why this one was left out side.

I can imagine the guilt dude has on making a bad choice on leaving his pet outside considering the hot and humid weather of late.

The irony of it all is that about an hour after dude buried his pet, it got dark and cloudy and cooled down about 20 degrees to about 80 or so and then it rained.
If only the rain and cooler weather had came sooner rather then later.

It always breaks my heart to hear stories like this. We live in the Phoenix area and you wouldn't believe how often this happens down here. A couple of years ago a local Police Officer who happened to be a K/9 unit left his partner, a German Shepard in the car while he answered a call. The officer returned to the vehicle and found his dog in distress from the heat. He rushed the dog to a local vet where the poor dog expired that afternoon. The officer was actually brought up on charges of neglect and was suspended from duty for quite a while. People just don't realize that animals, just like people are really susceptible to heat stroke when they are left out in the sun. We have to walk our Lab in the early morning hours before the pavement gets too hot or it could blister her feet. Today the weather guys are looking for record high temps here,120*degrees or better for the next couple of days. I hope everyone pays attention to this kind of situation and take care of your furry little buddies, keep em watered and cool.

thats horrible....i hope he learns from this...maybe someone can suggest that on super hot days if there wont be enough shade for a new dog..leave a sprinkler running on low..just enough the dog can get cooled off..maybe even a small sprinkler and a old box fan to move the air behind it...put a small lean too next to the house the dog can access.i wonder if the dog wasnt completely house broken..would not potty in the house when "mom and dad" were home..but when left alone with the other dogs...he had accidents?...

Poor dog roasts in the sun and dies from heat stroke, then the guy walks around crying. He should feel guilty, I hope it weighs heavy on him for a long time. If you care so little for your pet that you just leave him/her outside like a lawn flamingo all day long, put the animal up for adoption at a no-kill shelter so it can have a better home with caring owners.

Rather odd about the K-9 unit, but I heard about that incident as well.
Must have been doing something not related to the job, I wonder.

Highway Patrol K-9 units here all run with pet designed portable air conditioners in their units, with battery backups in case the car conks out.
In fact they had a news segment here by the local media showing the units, and new patrol units are installing two portable AC units, just in case one of those stops working.

Seemed like they were similar to these...

Sad indeed.
In the town of Milton close to me, a grandmother in charge of her 2 year old grand daughter for the day left her in the car for a 'significant' time, child found dead.
Don't know what these people are thinking of (obviously not much).
I know it's a different thing, but question arises: younger man supposedly with full faculties vs. aged grandmother, who's the bigger culprit?
(I think the grandmother's children should be partly to blame. Any thoughts? [just curious, not trying to stir up a hornet's nest])
