New air combat sim!

From the same people who bought us "Wings of Prey - Wings of Luftwaffe".

Need I say more?

Kev

Mmmmwwhhmmno (I think)

Is it a sim? It has a certain arcadish look over it. When they aim at the massive multiplayer online-crowd it can hardly be a proper sim. Great looks though! But they certainly have to do something about the tracer effect: It looks as if the Batwing has Spiderman-nieces. They spit horrible spiderweb threads to snare the enemy plane :icon_lol: (something that happens in CFS3 too, when viewing the AI at work from certain distances and angles). And I am not too sure about the historical accuracy of the 'historical missions' bit either when they are re-enacted through this platform. But did I mention that it does look nice?

This shows the in side of the plane. I like what I see with this.

Has any one sign-up to Beta test?

Look at it this way: Birds of Prey and World of Planes (and the console one they show) may be far more arcade-like than we may hope for, but they rekindle interest and development in flight sims. If alot of people play them, more developers and publishers will be more open to making more realistic ones again, and it won't be too big of a leap for players to go from these light sims to more realistic ones.

Why would this generate a development of new flight sims? If there should be a growing interest in arcade flight games due to these two, wouldn't it be more logical to expect a larger amount of new arcade flight games? Why would the crowd accustomed to using only 4 buttons with symbols on them suddenly develop an interest in the - let's say - 107 keys of a keyboard? Let's face it, there's more money to be made from this group than from us, PC dinosaurs ;-)

I wish I could share your optimism Eraser and although I am sure that at some point a new, good (moddable) flightsim will be developed, I also think we need a lot of patience waiting for that.

Because not everyone who'll play them is not necessarily a button-mashing moron.

There are going to be people who play them and think they'd like something more realistic. There'll be people who want to fly jets and will stumble upon LOMAC, DCS and the Strike Fighters series (which is more recent, good and moddable). There'll be people who want to fly WW1 planes and find Rise of Flight and OFF. There'll be people who didn't necessarily want a more realistic sim, but try one and stick with them.

But mostly because of the attention. Games, and entertainment in general is dominated by a "me too!" attitude. All it takes is the success of something thought dead or collossal failure of something "hot" to change the trend.

Notice how before Avatar there were no 3D movies? Now everything is getting advertised as in 3D. Or how these free-to-play online games simply didn't exist long ago and now they're everywhere? DLC and microtransactions?

If something came along that looked that realistic yet had an open architecture such as cfs2 and 3 and fs9 and all the MS sims, so that the sim wiz's could screw around with the fx and all the other items that we have all come to love when they're modified, then I think it would be outstanding. But, if it's one of thos ethings where you can't really mess with it too much and the areas of "play" are limited then I'd have to pass. But man, it sure does slook pretty nice from inside of the plane.

My other concern would be just what kind of a machine does one need to run it smoothly? After a second look, it looks pretty good especially when I saw the PBY's and SBD's...pretty nice.

Hey, I have two of those controllers and I don't consider myself a moron :icon_lol: - and I never said others were. I just think that people who use those for flying are a different group than the ones thumbing through a telephone book-sized manual to find the function of that little button on the far side of the upper left console. (BTW, I use my controllers to play LEGO games. They're great fun and quite humorous - though I think the Star Wars version is the best). I can be accused of incidental button-mashing however. It sometimes is the only way to battle yourself a way through hordes of evil Empire minifigures, lol. Quite the opposite of conserving your ammo and fuel to make it home in one piece.

...Notice how before Avatar there were no 3D movies? Now everything is getting advertised as in 3D...

I did, I did. But does that not confirm my suspicions? That the success of X usually leads to more X and not to Y? The large companies are in it to make money, not to spill tons of it to please a rather small group. Small, independent companies may want to but probably lack the funding to develop a succesful product. But again, I hope you are right and we don't have to wait very long!!

And thanks for bringing Strike Fighters to my attention! I went looking for the dev's website as I have SF p1 (2002) but apparently there's a p2. Missed that one completely after letting p1 gather dust on the shelf following the disappointment I felt with it. Think I might give SP Vietnam p2 a try (p1 doesn't even run on Win7 anymore, the website says...). When doing research for RS & PTO I often find myself browsing through some Vietnam sites longer than necessary.

Guys,

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but did anyone Google it and have a real good look?

It's and MMOG (Massively Multiplayer Online Game), similar to another one called World of Tanks.

It is highly unlikely that it is unmoddable unless you spend money every time you want to change something, and it likely won't be anything you made.

There are a LOT of there kinds of games around now.

I share your lack of enthusiasm Grizz...:mixedsmi:

...Notice how before Avatar there were no 3D movies? Now everything is getting advertised as in 3D...

Hmmm...Eraser, you might want to take a look at this before you add that point to your argument: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_3-D_films.

In addition to the many 3D works before it, note that Avatar also used the Fusion Camera System concept, which had already been deployed on several of the preceding films.

Yes, they existed. But certainly wasn't as big or common a thing before avatar, you're missing my larger point on a detail.

Yeah, the Strike Fighters 2 line is phenomenal. The whole series got a bad rap at the start with the walmart fiasco, but like CFS3, continual mod development, and unlike CFS3 continued developer support. I still don't think prop planes fly as well as jets, but prior to AVHistory completely disappearing, they were quite happy with the results they were getting in SF2.

And I'm not the type to thumb through a 400 page manual, hence why I never bother with the study sims like Falcon 4. I want realistic performance from planes and weapons systems. I don't need every fine detail of cockpit climate control.

CFS3, IL2 and SF2's level of fidelity accomplishes this quite well without going overboard on controls and procedures that are critical to know in order to get a plane off the ground, much less function in combat. And I think it would not be too much to handle coming from Any of these newer semi-sims.

The SF2 line has a lot of potential and I know of some CFS3ers who really rate it - although I don't use it myself yet. The big problem with building models for it is needing 3ds Max version 6 up to 2009 (iirc) which is as easy to come by legitimately as spotting flamingoes wild in Iceland. Sad, but true. Until a cheaper, available alternative comes along wannabe modellers are a bit stuck.

If something like Cliffs of Dover had an sdk for add-ons that would be marvellous, but it hasn't happened yet. There is the promise of a combat weapons add-on for FSX which would really interest me, but we're still awaiting a product release. That's the one I'd most likely go for, FSX has years of potential in it yet and the tools are still free once you've got Deluxe or Gold. Meantime, we continue with this venerable but still capable CFS3.
