New Britain revisited by UncleTgt!

A new entry has been added to Add-Ons Library, category CFS 2 Scenery Add-Ons

Description: New Britain Scenery June 2013 By UncleTgt

Introduction

This project started life as a way to improve the stock scenery around Rabaul in a CFS2 install that used Rhumbas more accurate new world mesh. It quickly grew into a much larger project to redraw all of New Britain Islands & Atolls so they were depicted better within CFS2.

New Britain, or Niu Briten, is the largest island in the Bismarck Archipelago (named after Otto von Bismarck) of Papua New Guinea. It is separated from the island of New Guinea by the Dampier and Vitiaz Straits and from New Ireland by St. George's Channel. The island is roughly the size of Taiwan.

Contents
This scenery revises New Britain Island, the Duke of York Islands. It also reworks the Vitu Islands & Umboi Island chain that leads west towards Papua New Guinea mainland.New Ireland & it’s associated islands & atolls will be added at a later date.

It comprises:
New LWM polys to match Rhumbas more accurate world mesh.
New coastlines(with & without sandy beaches), & a complete set of water textures.
New land & waterclass to give a better impression of the jungle terrain, volcanic soil & coral atolls.
Several stock airbases were relocated & redrawn.
Some of Maskriders airbases are affected, these were relocated to match the new mesh & converted to gsl with destroyable objects at the same time.
New gsl work to give detail to the harbour areas as well as the airbases environs.
The textures were designed to display best using Dvslat’s FSX style dark jungle textures, & pacific blue water.

Add-ons required
Maskriders Papua New Guinea scenery
MR- LW library objects
LWD trees
LDW trees
LW trees
Wolfi Objects packs 1 thru 8
Xavier’s hangars, tents, piers, warehouses, barracks
Pen32win’s AA packs, coastal defence packs, airfield buildings, bunker pack, replacement stock infrastructure pack.
Usio’s Lighthouses
If you have any of Xavier or Maskriders airbase sceneries installed, you will most likely have most of these already in your install.

Credits
Thanks to:
Jean Bomber for his inspiration, advice & support. He talked me through getting to grips with G2K & more…
Maskrider for all his airbase packages & the blended airbase tutorial. This set the standard for airbase sceneries for the game.
Rhumbaflappy for the new more accurate world mesh – it was a desire to make best use of this development that is the driver for many of my scenery projects. He also developed the vtp1 fixer programme to fix display errors in vtp bgls compiled from Ground2K.
GavinC for his reworking of the stock airbases, making individual base reworking/ revision much easier
Shessi for his water textures, that were the inspiration for my reworking of Jimkos Pacific Blues, & indirectly lead me to develop this latest set of water textures.
Lindsay Watt for all of his scenery objects & innovations.
Wolfi for his scenery objects.
Xavier for all his scenery objects & airbase sceneries, opening up a larger world for us all to fly in
Martin Wright for all the various software tools that are so useful!
Russell Dirks for his EZ landclass programme, making large scale land/ water class adjustments possible
Christian Fumey for his excl8 & Ground2K programmes, making the creation of completely new scenery possible for CFS2.

UncleTgt,

This is outstanding, thank you for much, along with many others, for your outstanding work on this, it is immensely appreciated! :salute:

This is brilliant work! This is what a few of us envisioned years ago, and what drove us to create the basic tools needed for scenery design in the FS series. CFS2 was the first of Microsoft's new terrain scheme, but because we're a 'niche' in the broader flightsim world, CFS2 was orphaned as far as scenery creation is concerned. This quality of scenery is a stunning example of what can be accomplished with the tools and knowledge available.

I truly appreciate the time and effort to create a masterpiece like this. Thanks, UncleTgt. :applause:

Thanks for....

Thanks for Being so thorough in your scenery installation instructions. I learned big lessons in the way to install scenery. Many thanks for your support. :applause:

Thanks very much UncleTgt. I've just finished installing the scenery and it looks fabulous.

For those who are using Rhumba's older Pacific coastal flattens rather than his newer watermasks, the following files need to be removed:

M4922631.BGL - New Britain
M4922651.BGL - New Britain
M4922731.BGL - New Britain
M4962611.BGL - New Britain
M4962671.BGL - New Britain
M4962711.BGL - New Britain

These two need removing for your Caroline Islands scenery as well:

M5042671.BGL - Truk
M5042711.BGL - Truk

There should be a few others for the Carolines as well as for your Andarman Islands scenery. I'll post them when I find them.

Thanks again,

Kevin :applause: :salute:

Magnificent!

I'd like to add my congratulations to all those voiced before me. What a treat to see Rabaul accurately rendered. Your New Britain scenery makes CFS2 stock scenery pale in comparison. I've just finished a quicky round tour mission of all your new bases in my favorite A6M2-21 overhaul by the B24 Guy. Starting at "PNG_NB_CapeGloucester NNW takeoff" and proceeding east I ran shy of fuel and had to set down at "PNG_NB_Maguna-Buka". It is one of the most realistic looking jungle bases I've seen. Little more than a grass strip. I taxied up to the fuel depot and...surprise....my tanks were topped off and I'm ready to go again. Back in the air for the last leg to Rabaul. Thanks UT.

Thanks kdriver, that cleared up a couple of issues I was having but was too embarrassed to ask about.

I am having trouble installing the SWPTO_Reefs_UT scenery. It didn't appear on either the CFS2 scenery folder, or the scenery cfg, yet, if I attempt to reinstall it, it says the link is already there!!!! I've deleted it from the Scene db folder and then reinstalled it there, but, so far, no joy. Ideas anyone?

SPman,

Your post is difficult to follow - just checking, you are using the "add scenery" dialogue within CFS 2 to navigate to the folder(s) & activate the scenery aren't you?

In which case, scroll through the layers to see if you have duplicates - I'm assuming the game says the link is already there because there's already a folder by that name.

The only other thing is to make sure to delete any filelist.dat before you fire up CFS 2 (I'm not entirely sure there is one for add on scenery). Don't worry it will recompile. That might be why you're getting an (incorrect) "its already there" message.

I'll try that. All the other layers added in just fine - it was just the reefs scenery that wasn't playing ball!

...New Ireland progress report

Took some time off, but I can report...

New Hanover, New Ireland, Tingwon, Tabar, Tanga, Lihir, Feni, Nugura & Green Islands & associated reefs etc
LWM & VTP polys done, shorelines completed, new landclass & new waterclasses all done & tested
Now starting on the airbases, first off a look at the replacement background for the stock Kavieng airstrip

Once I have the airbases backdrops done, its just gsl work & eyecandy & she's finished. Plan is to add it to the same folder structure used for New Britain.
