New Cactus Base Henderson Field Guadalcanal Aug. 1942

I wanted to let everyone know that I am still working hard trying to get the missions complete.I am still having computter problems but the work goes on.I am up to Sept 2nd 1942 in the missions and trying to fly them the way they were flown by the real pilots is a learning experance.I am trying to give the player a little taste of history while keeping it interesting. The problem is that the missions flown by the F4Fs were about the same every day.About noon every day weather permitting the enemy bombers and escort fighters would fly over and bomb the airfield. This is where the problem lies, how do you keep it interesting when it is the samething everytime? I will keep working on it and hope I get it right.

Bob,

You can do a few ship attacks to break it up.

August 21,1942-Wildcats attacked Japanese barges as they approached Guadalcanal.

August 25,1942-Wildcats flew cover as SBDs attacked a convoy of transports with DD escort.

October 16,1942-Wildcats flew cover for SBDs as IJN transports were unloading off Guadalcana.Tthe Wildcats also attacked the transports after taking care of the Japanese CAP.

Just some suggestions for you.

Talon, thanks for the suggestions. I new about the ground support mission but not about the barges.I have 2 ground support missions so i can change one of them, can you give me some more info on that mission. I have the escort mission on the 25th but from the info I have the F4Fs broke escort and returned to base early because they were low on fuel. On the way home they ran into a mavis and put it under the water. The Missions I am doing end when VMF 223 VMF 224 and VF5 along with VMSB 232 and 233 left the Island on the 11th of OCT.

Early morning August 21,1942 Everton lead a flight of 4 wildcats to attack 4 Japanese barges filled with Marines. They were about 15 miles NW of Henderson. All 4 were sunk or badly damaged.

This is one of the missions I did in my USMC Aces camapign. It started August 21 and ended in December 1942.I didn't do eveyday ops but certain missions that the Aces flew. Some are the missions they did where they earned the Medal of Honor.

Talon, Thanks for the info. I am having problems finding day to day ops. info flown from Cactus . i do have the Aug 24th 1942 mission and the Aug 30th 1942 mission in detail but day to day missions flown by the fighters for most of Aug from the 24th to the 30th are lacking in detail. I did find out that on the 22nd of Aug the weather was so bad that there was no attack but we did manage to get 5 P-400s to Cactus. and again on the 27th they manager to bring in 9 more P-400s for alot of good it did them.On the 30th of Aug 1942 the 67th lost 4 P-400s shot down and the rest damaged so bad that they were all grounded. They later were able to put togeather 5 that would fly but that was about it.My info gets alot of detail after VF5 lands at Cactus on Sept 11 1942.

Bob if you look up these names of some aces that served there you will get more info.

These pilots all flew in the time period you are working on.

Capt.John L Smith
Col Harold Bauer-He flew 1 or 2 missions with Carl.
Loren D Everton
Marion Carl

Talon, thanks , I hadn`t thought of that. Ihave all there names but never thought to look them up. I did do Maj. Smith and Carl but that was it.:untroubled:

Fellows I am almost finished with the missions. I have tested and restested them and have done everything I can to make them as close to what happened as possible. The missions are based on fact but due to the limits imposed by CFS2 I am unable to make them dup the real missions as close as I would have liked. I have worked on the AI so that they are harder to hit but not so hard that you can`t bring them down. I have done the scenery and I have the AI landing and taking off in the same direction unlike CFS2. Well I just wanted to give you fellows an update as to where I am with the missions. For thoes that want to know the missions are not historic missions flown by anyone pilot but an evertday look at what it was like from day to day.:untroubled:

Fellows I haven`t been on here posting much but I have been reworking all of my Cactus Missions. I think i have done about as much as i can to give some type of feel for being there. All the missions are fighter missions but with a little work you can turn them into bomber missions. THEY ARE ALL FOLWN IN REAL TIME and without the use of any aids accept for checking the airfield when landing for other aircraft in the pattern using your tac display. I hope to finish soon and get them uploaded.
