NEW CFS2 World LOD 5 Mesh by Rhumbaflappy!

No one has posted on this, I'm shocked...

Rhumbaflappy has just put out a 4 part LOD 5 Mesh for the world.....

:woot:

From RL's READ ME.
The LOD5 mesh data for CFS2 was incomplete, and based on now outdated elevational data. These files replace and add to form a complete LOD5 dataset for CFS2. These files will also work in FS2002 and may work in FS2004, and should provide greater compatibility with SRTM derived addon mesh.

Thank You RL!!!!!:ernae:

Jus' Curious...

On the subject of DEM files...

What does RF's dem4km.zip file DO ezzactly ?

I haven't quite grasped the concept of these landclass files, except in a VERY basic fashion...

TIA
SC

Dem4km.bgl is a the default base (4km) terrain mesh. It's the ground elevation data. In CFS2 it's located in the Root SCENERY Directory.

Land/water class is different, it tells the Sim what texture to display over the mesh.

I've read there has been a lot of people with FS9 and FSX where this file goes corrupt or completly missing. When that happens the app can't launch. [LINESTRIKE]This is probably a replacement for it.[/LINESTRIKE] Edit... I didn't see this D/L until just now, it's for CFS2.... My Bad, I didn't see it with the other 4 D/L's Rhumba just added.

Coming from Rhumbaflappy, i suppose THIS MUST BE IT when talking about mesh?! What i would like to see now is a discussion of which mesh to use and which to deinstall from all the previous mesh packages we have used over the last years. Wether it is Europe(SDC?) or Pacific installations.

New Mesh Files

Yep, thanks a bunch Richard. I'm going to start using it in my PTO installation this afternoon after I get back from my daily jog.

It's great to see the sim constantly improving.

By the way, I use your Tropical Land Class in all of my CFS 2 installations and with this new mesh underneath it, I should be in near heaven over my old stomping grounds in Asia.

For our newer members, CFS 2 can be vastly improved in Asia (the PTO) by going over to simviation.com or avsim.com and downloading and installing Rhumbaflappy's "Tropical Landclass" and his "Seasonal Textures." Search for "Ludowise" or "Rhumbaflappy."

When used with Pen32's suggestions for CFS 2 textures, you change from the original "ho hum" scenery of the stock MS sim to very believable and realistic looking views. It finally lives up to the old MS flight motto of "As real as it gets."

I just did a quick slew around PNG and New Britain.

Here's my findings.

Before I did this I deactivated all of my add-on mesh.

It fixes the gaps, like the one between Gasmata and Rabaul. There used to be a "Terrain Dead Zone" there. It's fixed.

It really smooths out the existing mesh. In the LOD 5 areas, like the spine of PNG west of Alexishafen it looks much, much better. There used to be some "Madonna Cone Chi Chi" mountains there. They look much better now.

Becuase it's LOD 5 mesh it does not fix things where MS's LOD 9 (I think) mesh ends. The little "cliffs" at the edges, like west of Alexishafen and west of Cape Gloucester still exist.

All in all, it's a great package so far. I've been from PM to CG to Rabaul and then back up the coast to Hollandia so far. And so far so good.

Thanks Agian Rhumba.....

Thanks to rhumba for this new great addon :friday:it the begin of a complete new enhancement of the cfs2 scenery

Thanks, Rhumba! Together with Pen32win Port Moresby complex... what a great week for CFS2!!!

I'm looking forward to trying this....thanks Rhumba, and thanks for the HU Pen. You've already answered my question about what to do with the mesh I've added over the years.

When adding files to existing ( default ) folders, I would advise to delete the folder's filelist.dat file, which will then rebuild on the next startup.

This week I'll start to upload the world LOD7 mesh. It's 92 BGLs... 4 'CST' areas of the world have no mesh.

These mesh files should work for FS2002 and FS2004 as well.

That mesh should have it's own scenery folder, and be placed right after the default scenery in the Library order. I'll combine files to save downloads, but it will still be about 20 total downloads. :(

The whole set should be used. There will be no gaps. These will also work in FS2002 and FS2004.

I've been working on LOD9 mesh, but have had a few setbacks... should have some things in a couple of weeks. These will also work in FS2002 and FS2004.

Along with those LOD9 areas, I'll have new land-water masking. The default shores won't match anymore, so the endusers should just rename the default vtp BGLs as '.orig' to deactivate them.

I plan to do the default CFS2 areas, and can do europe if requested. These later areas are not translated from FS9, but are based on the mesh and the CGIAR srtm 90 meter masking. So they reflect real-world land and water. I may try a new waterclass for these areas, and perhaps a new landclass.

The new lwm masking, landclass and waterclass will only work in CFS2.

WOW !!

(I think I understood most of it lol )

Thanks mate, this work is soooooo much appreciated :applause:

Let me quote one of the villains in a 007 movie: "Most excellent!"

By the way, my flight around New Guinea this evening was most enjoyable and the new files worked without a glitch. They go into all of my installations next chance that I get.

Well I can attest that this new mesh used in conjunction with Replacement PTO textures by Stiz (my_tex_v3.zip) looks very good indeed...thank you very much!

Dick,
your last post is most excellent news, especially if the files will work in FS2002 and FS2004 as well. I can only imagine just how much work is involved in such an apparently immense undertaking. Please can I lodge a request for the European coverage that you hinted at, even though that does mean yet more work for you.

I'd also like to second Morton's point about a discussion on the various mesh products that we already have in use and which ones to use and which to un-install, though it does sound as if Mike's trying to take over the world ... LOL.

To quote from "The Last Samurai", "jolly good",
best regards,
Ro

Are these files Pacific Theater only? Or are they general use? I don't know exactly how these work...:help:

These mesh files, and the upcoming LOD7 mesh, are worldwide for CFS2, FS2002 and FS2004. This is a complete integrated set that will cover the whole earth as LOD3, LOD5, and LOD7. They use the most current freely available data.

Once the LOD7 set is uploaded, I would remove all default and addon mesh, unless I was sure the addon was more accurate/detailed than the LOD7. And for purposes of combat sim, it's unlikely you'd need any other sets... they will only take up room on your harddrive. Mesh at LO9, which I'm experimenting with, may still have some use witn CFS2, but framerates will drop a bit.

I started this as a response to discussions about mesh available at simviation, and of how bad the quality of that mesh is. This will provide a good alternative to that mesh. It's not a competitive thing.. it's just either made right or it's not.

Dick

Sounds great, thanks for all your hard work. Now for the uninformed among us(that would be me)I would like to see a list of favored scenery and object files to go with the new mesh to get the most from it.I'm going to do a fresh install of CFS2 and want to get it right the first time.
I would like to thank everyone for all of the hard work and help. :help:
