FS2004/FSX Curtiss P36 Mohawk. The Curtiss P-36 Hawk, also known as the Curtiss Hawk Model 75, was an American designed and built fighter aircraft of the1930s and 40s. A contemporary of the much superior Hawker Hurricane and Messerschmitt Bf 109, it was one of the first of a new generation of combat aircraft--a sleek monoplane design making extensive use of metal in its construction and powered by a powerful radial engine. Obsolete at the onset of World War II and best known as the predecessor of the Curtiss P-40. This is a Finnish version powered by the Cyclone engine. Gmax model by A. F. Scrub.

I have been waiting for this one for at least six years going back to my CFS2 days; back then all we had was a modified FS5/FS98 version (the one by Eric Johnson). I had wanted one for FS2004 ever since I got it. Granted the Donationware P-36 isn't bad but the Cyclone engined version has always looked better in my eyes.
I see a lot of repaint potential...
Mohawk IV's of 155 Squadron
Dutch Hawk 75A-7's
Norwegian Hawk 75A-8's (which became the USAAC's P-36G, which ended up in the Peruvian Air Force)
Chinese Hawk 75A-5
Persian Hawk 75A-9
There was even a Hawk 75A-4 or two that was used as an advanced trainer by the Luftwaffe.
Now all we need is some talented folks to haul this baby into the paint booth...:ernae:
 
OK, just did a short test flight. Will need some work in the cfg file; bounces around a bit; likely a contact point issue. Once it gets airborne it flies like it should; top end seems about right and with just the right amount of balance when doing rolls, immelmans and loops. Only seems to be one problem in flight: in a full on power dive the controls freeze up over 300mph. The real thing was good for over 500mph in a dive; one of my sources from long ago claims 550mph. We'll see what we can do on this but comments are most welcome.:wavey:
 
It flies pretty good for me. And it's nice to have a Morton skin included.

Don't get me wrong it flies great. When it's on the ground it jiggles and shakes worse than some paint mixers I've seen. When the power's off, no problem. The second I start it up so does the jiggling.
BTW, don't try a power on dive; you won't recover after you hit 320 kts and vertical (at least with the current FDE). When it registered as a crash a few seconds later all i saw was the rudder trim tab sticking out of the ground.
 
I went to simviation to get the Hawk 75N to toy around with the contact points and I got this. LIFE IS GOOD!!!:jump::
And it's in Dutch colors too!!! How cool is that?!?

Edit: took it for a quick flight; still flies great, still jiggly on the ground...but not as bad as before. Will be looking into it :)

Great news from the CFS2 guys...

Looks like Oldwheat has uploaded a CFS2 version with modded .air and .cfg files (by Peperez):ernae:.
Ever the curious sort I downloaded it and tried it in FS9. Ground jiggles are nearly non-existant. Top end seems a bit hot but I'm liking it. The new mdl file doesn't have gun tubes which is great for the CFS2 crowd; good for us too; we could make a few 'what if' civilianised versions.

This is actually one of my all-time favorite WWII period aircraft; not for what it did but what it could have been. Had Curtiss stuck with developing a radial-engined fighter or at least kept development concurrent with their V-12 powered Model 81 we could have seen a pretty potent bird.
Case in point: What if Curtiss entered the Navy competition that made the Brewster Buffalo a winner? A navalized P-36 would have made mincemeat out of the Buffalo and would have given the F4F a serious run for its money. I'm thinking ficticious repaint here...the F13C Seahawk.
Just a thought...but one that's been stuck in my head for years.:jump:
