New FSX P-38!

OK. I got the bake done, and did the gauges. Things are looking very good so far. Here is a test render. Now that the texture baking is done, this is a good representation of how it will look like IN GAME! It may look even better with FSX lighting.

Still has a lot more work in making it look "lived in" and stuff. Just a note. This is using Max default rendering. NO shadows or advanced light. Everything you see it texture except some overly dark area's.

Absolutely beautiful work, Kevin!

I also am a huge fan of the early birds and would gladly pay extra for a package of F, G, and/or H variants. Not that I have anything against the later J/L models, mind you! And while I'm running off at the mouth, I'd love to see some recon versions, too!

I have a personal fondness for the late-war big mouths myself. I have spent most of my life around Jolting Josy/23 Skidoo

Your statement has a bit of irony in it as the original "23 Skidoo" of the 432nd FS was an H model...

Anyway, thanks for all your efforts and I'll be a definite customer when this bird is released.

Thanks for the great comments. The 23 Skidoo im talking about is a restored J at Chino's Planes of Fame museum owned and operated by Steve Hinton. Here is a photo I took over it last year during a film shoot for the TV show "Showdown; Air Combat" I worked on last year.

Yeah I know the restoration you're talking about, and an amazing one it is, too! I'm envious of your opportunity to inspect her up close. Here is a rendering of the original plane from which the restoration paint scheme was taken. It was a P-38H-1 flown by Lt. Perry Dahl of the 432nd FS, 475th FG. But you probably already knew that!

I'm a big fan of your work. I loved your renditions of the '38 for Sky Unlimited and IL2 and am really looking forward to this one in FSX. Thanks again!

wow nice i am goto have to work on earning some money to buy this P38 though i wanna work on geting the pBY first:ernae:

Gib... great to see you around. Haven't seen you in a couple of years... since the UBI IL2 forums. 38 pit looks good, keep up the good work bud. :applause:

I hae been around, just quietly working on FSX projects, and for some time, working at MS on FS11. Unfortunately early this year the FS11 team was let go, so im now working full steam on FSX add-on's.

Later today I will have an almost finished P-38 cockpit! Keep an eye on this thread ;) :ernae:

Here are the "close to final" screenshots I promised. Please note that these are screenshots in Max, NOT renders. All lighting and shading you see is all in the texture, and you will see it in game.

Now, I need some help from the community and P-38 fans. There is a breaker box, with 3 breakers, between the throttle/prop pitch and main panel that controls the prop feature. Can ANYONE get me the text on that? I dont have any references on it. Some help would be GREAT. Also, if you see anything missing or out-of-place, NOWS the time to speak up, or forever hold your peace.

I have been doing this for years, and know the value of critique, so feel free to speak up please!!!

To me the HUD is one of the most important things in a VC

How about putting some dust on there, I think that'd be a cool touch

Well first, your thinking a little more modern ;) Thats a gunsight, not quite a HUD, but I guess you can think of it as one.

Also, are you thinking of dirt on the glass reflector part?

I know it's a Gun Sight lol, HUD is just shorter.

Yea just a little dirty that you will notice when the glass is right in the sun

I will talk to Colin about it. He tends to shy away from using Alpha maps since it causes some untild grief in FSX/Accell. Its easy to do, and I have room for it. I really loved the effect they did on the PBY with the dirt around the wind shield wipers and things like that. I think it adds to the authenticity of real-life wear and tear! Then again, im a big fan of reflective glass, but a lot of people HATE that.

Well, I have a couple references on P-38s back at home, including one of those pilot handbooks for the P-38L, but I’m on the road currently. I’ll check on Saturday, when I get back, but I bet you get the answer by then…

The cockpit is looking great!

On dirty windows and gun sights – I’m ok with it, up to a point. Many FS9 planes have what amounts to “tinted glass”, in an attempt to produce, I think, dirty glass. I always disliked that effect. I haven’t seen that effect much in FSX planes. I like the reflecting glass, but I guess it can be overdone… The PBY glass is nice.

EDIT: Are you talking about what my PDF copy of the P-38 book calls "propeller selector switches"?

I'm impressed Paul, not only did you beat me to it (with images of the areas Gibbage is looking at) but I see you carry a PDF copy of the manual with you on trips! I'm not even that much of a P-38 nut! :d

that's definitely the prop circuit breaker box ... some of my pics show the two button variety and some show a three, like you've got there, but all red (in my color photos which are all from restored planes, hard to tell in the B&W ones I've got which lack detail).

Can't make out the lettering on any of my photos either, but I'd be willing to be the two on the left in your photo have text similar to what PRB posted.

Yeah, as soon as I posted that I was out of town and didn’t have access to my books, I remembered the small collection of PDF pilot manuals that I had downloaded a while ago. I went poking around my data drive wondering if I had them on this laptop, and I did, and a P-38 included!

From the same document, the items labeled “9” are identified as prop circuit breakers, so I’m sure that’s what they are. As for the text next to the CBs, although the camera isn’t close enough to read in the color photos above, it doesn’t seem that there are enough letters to spell “LEFT PROP CIRCUIT BREAKER – PUSH TO RESET”, as suggested in the PDF document.
