New German flak guns by Pen32Win...

What fantastic looking work. If only we could crank up the cfs2 engine and not worry about fps.
I don't own a powerful computer so I dont really know how my models run on faster computers.
It wont be too long our slow computers will be replaced.

Thanks Gents;

Robert, these should work well on low end PC's too. The lower LOD's are actually very poly friendly and since I use 5 LOD's so you have get very close to them before the high poly LOD's kick in. Having a couple of Beta Testers with different levels of PC's always helps too. If you know they run well/look good on a lower end PC you know they'll kick kiester on a higher end rig. Hope you get your upgrades soon!!!

On the gmax side there are a few tricks I use to getting lower poly counts by Welding Verticies and deleting unseen poly's. Example, you have a flat ended 8 sided cylinder, 8 verticies on the outside edge and one in the center. If the end of the cylinder is not pointed or concave take the center vertex and weld it to one of the outer edge verticies. If you do both ends that's 2 less polys, 4 less triangles just in that one part. Believe it or not, on a complex object that can save you a couple of hundred polys. Another great thing to have when trying to optimize your models is to have a second set of eyes look at it. I've found I can miss an opportunity now and then after looking at the same model hundereds of times. If you ever want me to look over a model for you I'd be happy to help.

KH, thanks and keep your silk dry. More to come. Things have been going well and I now hope we can put these out this weekend if not before.

Thanks Rav;

That's great, it has the RAL Numbers on it which is the important thing. I've got a paint site I go to to get bmp samples by RAL #. Then I open the bmp in PSP, get all of the RGB, Hue, Brightness, etc data and finally create a new Material in gmax based on that data. This is how I did all of the colors for the guns themselves.

From your sample it looks like we're pretty bloody close to the real mccoy.

Pen32Win,

Thank you SO MUCH for building these, they are appreciated and needed by me more thank you know. :salute:

You are Welcome Sir....

Next up the Flakvierling 38, 4x the fire power..... Just as soon as I get my new home for them ready.... which is going very well thank to your great guide(s)..... got both ETO's done last night as well as the MTO parts that are the same......

Hello Pen32Win,

Excellent job, the quad version will also be a great addition, many thanks and keep up the great work !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :jump::ernae:
(Unfortunately most of my good references are still in storage and probably will be for at least the next 6 months, will be after some tips and advice from you when they are liberated from the storage Stalag, anybody interested in a Jap 25mm triple barrel version, a 20mm Polsten, a Russian 85mm, the two versions of the 3.7inch mobile and static, and a good M16 quad 50 cal ?)

Thanks Seagull;

I know the 25mm is part of the stock scenery but is in dire need of an upgrade. I also know the Japanese fielded a lot of twin 25mm's too. I think the rest on your list are all good projects and wide open. The 20mm Polsten would be really cool and is almost unheard of outside of historian minded circles. That being said, the QF 3.7' would be be my first choice.

The four German AA Guns I'm working on now are a set-up for a bigger project. Once they're completed I want to try my hand at AFV's. To start with several vaiants of the SdKfz FlaK AFV's (6/2, 7/1, 7/2, 10/4, 10/5, 251/17 Ausf C, 140/Gepard), FlaK 43 sWS , the Ostwin, Wirblewind and Mobelwagen. These should keep me busy for quite awhile.

HEY RAV!!!

I found the answer to the question about the Flakvierling 38 in North Africa.

Go to Youtube and search for "Bir Hacheim"

Select WW2 - Capture of Bir Hacheim

Watch about 4:55 what shows up......

Wow, I've had my head down working on the P-51D update and just now got to look at these Pen. All it needs is bodies strewn around the damage model and I would think I had been transported back in time. What a great job.

THANK YOU

Pen32Win,

I am really enjoying using these flak guns, and really appreciate the fact that you also created an MG42, something that I could also use. Thank you so very much! :salute:

Sweet

Hey Pen,

Fantastic work - could almost turn me into an ETO guy - reminds me of Tamiya 1/35th scale models in the 80's. I was going to ask about the Mobelwagen the Flak 38 quad 20mm on a PZKPFW IV chassis - that could make close air support very interesting! sounds like you're already on it!

Thank You Rami and GR;

More to come as soon as I get all of my new installs worked out. Which is going well now. Got all of my excessive weapons and DP's sorted

GR;

The Mobelwagen was produced with the 3.7cm Flak 43, only a single prototype was made with the Flakvierling 38. You're thinking about the Wirbelwind. Both were based on the Panzer IV chassis but the Mobelwagen had 4 fold down sides were the Wirbelwind (and Ostwind) had a six sided turret. Yes Sir, as soon as I get the three other ground mount AA guns done I'm going to start putting them on their respective AFV's.

One of the best sources for figuring out what the individual parts looked like and how they were constructed is plastic models. 3-View Drawings are great for getting the size and proportions right but they're not very good for seeing the details.

Thanks Again Gents.
