Just saw a trailer for a new HBO series that is scheduled to start in March. It is call 'The Pacific" and it is by the same group who did " Band of Brothers". Trailers look good so it maybe worth watching.:salute:

Fibber~ I saw the advertisement for it in one of my magazines. I agree, it looks promising! Speaking of "Band of Brothers", I bought the BluRay boxset for myself right before Christmas and I have yet to watch any of it.
The reviews are very high for "Band of Brothers"- At one time, I remember some of you guys talking about it in a thread in the Newshawks, and that's what prompted me to buy it.

I'm adding "The Pacific" to my DVR recording list! Thanks for the reminder!

"The Pacific"

If "The Pacific" is as good as "Band of Brothers" we're in for a treat. Band of Brothers was well researched, produced, well acted and the equipment and uniforms were mostly spot on for the 101st Airborne in 1944 and 1945. I've no doubt that "The Pacific" will be the equal sequil with the USMC picking up the staring role.

Thank you for the reminder. I have been looking forward to this new series release for a while. Band of Brother and Saving Private Ryant are amoung my favorite serie and Movie dedicated to World war two. But there has nerver been a good seies or Movie dedicated to the Pacific. With the exception of Tora Tora Tora and the Battle of Midway most movie run some what short of what was it really like to fight in the Pacific from a Soldier or Marine point of view.

The Japanese was probably the toughesft enemy we ever meet in the Battlefield of any of our wars. No they where not the smartest nor the best arm enemy we ever met. But they where sure where the toughest to beat. Just take the Battle of Tarawa and Iwo Jima for example. Even after losing their Comander before the real ounset of the Battle for Tarawa started they still manage to give our Marines one Hell of a fight on very small small Island for three Day evendow they where totaly surounded and out gun and out number.

Our Marines where always able to beat them but at a tremendous cost and after very heavy fighting. In Iwo Jima we had the same experience as in Tarawa. Only one Thousand Japanese surrender from a force of over twenty two thousand. WoW Incredible!

No where in WW2 where so many Men killed or injured in such small space in such short time. Yes! You can say in Stalingrad or in the Battle of Kusk or D-Day more men where kill and hurt but the number involved and the spaces involved where much greater than in Tarawa and Iwo Jima.

I just want to remind our member that the war in the Pacific was a great struggle that should never be forgotten. Fought over by very brave men on both sides.

This Post is not meant to demean the sacrifyces of those who fought in the European Theater by any mean. Its meant to single out the sacrifices of those who fought and die in the Pacific.

To me and to many other World war two was a World struggle and it did not matter where our men fought or die they where all Heroes who faced two formidable enemy and overcame prejudice and evil.

I recommend we see this series!

This thread caused me to have HBO reconnected by my cable provider. I dropped HBO in 2006 because they canceled CARNIVALE' and DEADWOOD, both of which were doing well in ratings. I'm not the only one who did that. HBO's scam was to produce these series and then sell them to the syndicated market, any show they could get no nibbles on per interest in syndication got canceled regardless of popularity. In all ways, BAND OF BROTHERS and DEADWOOD, not just for historical context, are the finest things HBO ever produced. CARNIVALE' was the finest horror series for TV I ever saw, DARK SHADOWS notwithstanding. I'm expecting HBO to make THE PACIFIC a multi award winner but for different reasons than most think. There is a vast fan base for BoB out there to tap into, I have no doubts THE PACIFIC will be fantastic.

What I loved best about BoB was to me it was a big ten hour episode of the old series COMBAT. Other than McHALE'S NAVY, there was no representation of the Pacific war on TV and few movies. Within the last decade or so THE THIN RED LINE and WINDTALKERS did their best; I hope THE PACIFIC fills the gap.

Just last night I watched, "Flags of Our Fathers", "Letters From Iwo Jima", "The Great Raid", "Thin Red Line" and "Windtalkers". Yep a little over 10 hours of of Pacific hell on earth, just to set the mood for the start of the new series. Does my excitement show?:jump:

HBO SERIES

Tony;
Agree with you about HBO. I really liked DEADWOOD and couldn't understand why they just dropped it. Although near the end it was taking on the flair of Shakesphere! My other favorite was ROME. I really liked that one except for a few gaffs here and there. Like having one of the actors feeding a Cockatiels in one of the scenes. To the best of my knowledge Cockatiels were indigenous to Austrailia and I don't think the Romans got that far at the time. it was another one that was dropped because of no syndication was forthcoming. People I knew in the business at the time told me that it was extremely expensive to produce and with no syndication it became a albatross dragging down the bottom line. Never could get into Carnevale. BoB is one I must have missed, or it wasn't carried here.
Anyway, did you check on the settings on your VooDoo card?

I agree, cant wait to watch the series, however for the UK viewers its only available via sky :-(

Can't say I have a lot of promise for the "Pacific". The Marine Corps has had no part in the series, i.e. Hollywood doesn't have a clue what it means to be a Marine. I have a very close friend (Marine GySgt) who has worked on movies as a consultant; Flags of our Fathers, Windtalkers and a few more. I helped open the Marine Corps Museum in Quantico with him; he runs an outfitted called "The Marine Corps Historical Company." The USMCHC is the formost Marine historical group in the world. The point being he knows people in and around the series and the report is that the series is a mess! They had to re-shoot a lot of the scene's because it was so bad. Also the story line has wrong historical facts in it.

The one good part of the series I'm looking forward to is E.B. Sledge's story: "With the Old Breed" about the 1st MarDiv. Hopefully they haven't screwed that up! S/F

Another question, on what book is this based? They say it tells the story of 3 men fighting in the Pacific.

Thanks, R.

Robcap,

In reading some of the info at the series web site, it is apparently based on "Helmet for my Pillow" and "With the Old Breed." I read both books many years ago and I recall them as being factual and a good read.

I love the old Pacific war movies from the WW2 period Cad, though they are clearly propaganda movies. A very intense movie from the 60s was the original THIN RED LINE with Keir Dullea and Jack Warden. Another good one is one I can't recall the name, Jeffrey Hunter and David Janssen, Janssen is Hunter's best friend nd is killed by a Japanese officer, Hunter goes kill crazy, though he was adopted by Japanese parents in America, I think it took place on Saipan. A "controversial" film that I've only seen once is WAR KILL with George Montgomery, again another kill crazy soldier. I don't know what could possibly be "controversial" after 42 years since it's filming(1968) but it's an extremely hard film to find,even more so to see.

Fibber, were you a member of the SOPRANOS group on Yahoo?
I never saw ROME though I'll find the DVDs somewhere for a good price. I enjoyed the first two seasons of SIX FEET UNDER, though overall it was Alan Ball's 5 season sermon on Zen Buddhism. CARNIVALE was pure black classic horror of the likes will never be seen on TV again, the kind I write. Clancy Brown got a chance to spread his acting wings. The SOPRANOS and SFU forums is where I learned fan input means nothing. DEADWOOD was my pick of the litter, being an Old West enthusaist I was glad to see to me what was an accurate portrayal of the times. HBO is tuning it's products to "demographics". As I've stated, my "demographic" believes in climate change(4 of them a year) listens to Black Sabbath and will rip your head off. FLAGS and LETTERS were good movies but being war movies there was not enough war in either for me.

I think you might have me mixed up with someone else on the Voodoo card my friend, I usually use what someone else has cast aside. I use 17-20 inch CRT monitors on a 128 meg ATI card that works fine. I think the current flatscreen technology is a step backwards.

MIXUP

Tony;
you are right, i mixed up my posts. The Voodoo was detined for Lonny and not you. Sorry if I confused you!:icon_lol: I was never a member of the Sopranos groupies but my wife sure qualified! I actually was a disinterested watcher when I did watch it.
I too am a affectionado of the Old West where "Men were Men and sheep were scared!":icon_lol: Love to ski out West and take side trips to many of the old towns like Tombstone and Virginia City, as examples.

Bones,
That wouldn't have been "Hell to Eternity" from around the early sixties would it? I've only seen it a couple of times and don't really remember that much about it other than the name. I do like the original "Thin Red Line" but after the new one came out, it's hard to find. Don't know that I've seen "War Kill," but I'll start looking.
