NEW HBO SERIES COMING

series start date

Just received my new USNI Naval History Mag and it has a two page advert for the series. It starts on MArch 14 at 2100 hours and every following Sunday at 2100 hours. So set those DVR's.
In addition, it seems to be based on the book " With the Old Breed" by Eugene Sledge.
(FTA) "It depicts the stories of members of the 1st Marine Division. It specifically depicts members like Medal of Honor recipient John Basilone Robert Leckie (Helmet for my pillow) and Eugene Sledge (With the Old Breed at Peleliu and Okinawa). The article states that the Navys' depiction is minimalized for expense reasons." The area was too vast. So belay any groaning, and criticism, about that in advance.
Just thought that I would pass that along.

Tony;
you are right, i mixed up my posts. The Voodoo was detined for Lonny and not you. Sorry if I confused you!:icon_lol: I was never a member of the Sopranos groupies but my wife sure qualified! I actually was a disinterested watcher when I did watch it.
I too am a affectionado of the Old West where "Men were Men and sheep were scared!":icon_lol: Love to ski out West and take side trips to many of the old towns like Tombstone and Virginia City, as examples.

No problem. I want to go to Deadwood, and would love to see the southwest someday. I want another Colt six shooter too, mine was stolen.

Bones

Bones,
That wouldn't have been "Hell to Eternity" from around the early sixties would it? I've only seen it a couple of times and don't really remember that much about it other than the name. I do like the original "Thin Red Line" but after the new one came out, it's hard to find. Don't know that I've seen "War Kill," but I'll start looking.

CAD

Could have been Cad, I'll have to check IMDB. I remember a Japanese officer does David Janssen with a sword and for the time it was pretty graphic, Jeffery Hunter goes kill crazy. WARKILL was George Montgomery and was supposed to have been "politically incorrect" because it cast "racial stereotypes". I remember it being Japanese and American soldiers killing each other.

another good one was Lee Marvin and I think Toshiro Mifune were trapped on an island together. There were so many big names in the new Thin Red Line I had trouble figgering out who the movie was really about. It had its moments. One thing I thought was weird was in the original TRL Keir Dullea goes nutcakes with a German MP-40, definetely out of place. Japanese submachineguns were rare in WW2, their use by the troops even rarer.

You want to talk rare war movies, I remember one where Edward G. Robinson Jr. and Frank Gorshin starred in one about an American tank that breaks down in Korea and they are trapped inside by a Chinese/North Korean machinegun nest.

Movies about the Eastern Front are very rare, a good one is CROSS OF IRON from 1977 with James Coburn, Sam Peckinpah's last movie.

I hope The Pacific lives up to the hype and the only good parts are not the trailers.

Bones

Probably 2 of the best books to come out of the Pacific campaign. Not to worry, When it comes down to the Pacific; Hanks & Speilburg (sp) will not disappoint you.:USA-flag: Watch the trailers on www.pacificfans.com. This series will be better than Band of Brothers.:icon29:
