Team Daedalus,

Your team has done a very nice and thorough job on these 109 updates. I do have one question on this model through...was the black band on the rear of the fuselage painted on all aircraft designated for Boilerplate, or was it simply a Jagdgeschwader marking?

Team Daedalus,

Your team has done a very nice and thorough job on these 109 updates. This one has a rather motley looking skin.....and I like how you have included the exhaust/soot stains along the wing root. Nice touch. :encouragement:

Team Daedalus,

Your team has done a very nice and thorough job on these 109 updates. What an odd-looking skin for a plane used in German skies in 1945 though, it leads me to speculate that it was a holdover from the late stages of the Italian campaign that never received a repaint?

Team Daedalus,

Your team has done a very nice and thorough job on these 109 updates. I do have one question on this model yet again....what do the yellow and black bands on the rear of the fuselage represent? Were those colors specifically reserved for Jagdgeschwader units stationed in Norway?

Rami,

A quick reply: The black band around the rear fuselage is not campaign driven, but the "Reichsverteidigung Rumpfband" or "Reich Defence Bands" which was used to identify the home defence aircraft belonging (in this case) to JG53. They were officially introduced from late 1943, however it took until 1945 until all home defence units were using them. Even in 1945 the were still units using the original white band or white rudder. So the black fuselage band has nothing to do with operation "Bodenplatte".

You can find more information here: http://www.angelfire.com/pr/jg53/s4a.htm

I'm sure that you will be able to find better information with a bit of Googling....

Cheers,
Huub

No they were used by JG5, which was stationed in Norway. However not even all aircraft from JG5 used these bands. for instance 12./JG5 still used the originally introduced "white rudder" at the end of the war.

Huub,

Thank you for the information. Yes, I could have Googled it, but my ulterior motive was that it was more of a conversation starter to give more than just the standard “attaboy” comment.

Team Daedalus,

Your team has done a very nice and thorough job on these 109 updates. I do have one question on this model through...what do the white and green bands on the rear of the fuselage represent?

Geschwader identification tail band for JG 77. Sometimes called Reich Defense or Reichsverteidigung Bands.

Team Daedalus,

Your team has done a very nice and thorough job on these 109 updates. This is probably my favorite skin; that 'wasp' look gives it the look of a plane with a deadly sting.

I do have one question on this model through...I thought yellow bandings were reserved for the OstFront. Did that change after Normandy, or was function more important than organization at that point?

Yellow tail bands weren't exclusively for the East Front. Yellow tail bands were worn by aircraft operating in the Balkans, particularly at the beginning of that theater's operations. A yellow Reich Defense band was also assigned Jagdgeschwader 11 which operated only on the west front until near the very end of the war.

To answer your question on the JG 76 machine, it's an unknown. Jagdgeschwader 76 never received an official tail band color.

It was originally created in 1939 but only had a single Gruppe, not the usual 3 Gruppes. It was never expanded and after the invasion of France, it's single Gruppe became II./JG54. It was reformed from survivors of I./ZG1 in July, 1944. It was under the control of II./JG52 during July and August at that time (when this aircraft was flying) which is likely why the tail band was yellow like other East Front units. Although ironically many JG52 aircraft used no tail bands at all. JG52's officially assigned tail band was red and white but apparently it was never applied to any of their Messerschmitts. If they used any tail band it was yellow. I./JG76 saw very limited combat during Normandy and Market Garden. Efforts to reconstitute a complete Geschwader proved impossible with the war conditions. Instead, it was incorporated into JG300 in October, 1944 as IV./JG300. On paper it was officially disbanded in April 1945.

Hi Rami,

No worries, I thought you thought that the fuselage was some sort of campaign marking. Actually it is a sort of campaign marking as the campaign in this case it the Defence of the Reich.

But what I meant to say with "Googling" is that the information behind link provided was perhaps a bit sparse. And that there must be much more detailed information available at the web.
As I answered while enjoying a short break, my answer had to short (like my break).

Cheers,
Huub

What can I say Team Daedalus, but thank you. These 109's look beatiful and work great in cfs2. Very much appreciate what your team builds for this old sim.
