Let's hope so. And speaking of new driver, do you use a driver cleaner after uninstalling a driver and then load the new driver?

You had logged off before I could edit my post with the following link for a free driver cleaner app from Guru3D.

Assuming you aren't familair with driver sweeper, it's used in Safe Mode as a orphan/leftover driver file remover from the registry after you've uninstalled a graphics driver using Add | Remove Programs BEFORE you install any driver update.

Follow this process:

  • Download and install Driver Sweeper.
  • Download the Nvidia driver update to the desktop or separate folder.
  • Go to Add | Remove Programs and uninstall the Nvidia Driver. If you have a Nvidia based motherboard be sure you select only the display driver to uninstall from the options.
  • Reboot when prompted. Once back to the desktop reboot again into Safe Mode.
  • Find and run Driver Sweeper in your Program listing, select Nvidia (not Nvidia chipset, audio, etc.)
  • Once it completes, reboot again to the desktop.
  • Now install the new driver update.
  • Once installed, set the Nvidia 3D display AA, AF to whatever value you want in the game, save and exit.
  • Start CFS3 and run CFS3Config (set resolution and AA you want) then click File and Exit.
  • Start OFF and in Workshops click on the CFS3 Config button to let it configure the game to your video card, then choose Custom to set your resolution and AA level and then set the OFF sliders to your liking.

Now can any one tell me why I should install a newer driver at the moment im running 175.19 dated 16 May 2008.

I am running a 8800 GT and happy with EVERY thing running on my PC all the flight sims (and I have a few) run just great good FPS.

So should I use the newer Driver just because it's new ?.

Not unless something is broken.

Hey guys

Just DL the latest NV drivers for my 8800 GTX and :woot:, probably added 5 FPS to the rate!

If the games you play run to your satisfaction then no. New drivers mean corrected display and other game performance issues fixes as well as increased frame rates in some games. If you run any of the following games then it would be to your benefit to update the driver:

New in Release 182.06:
  • Recommended for the best experience in F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin.
  • Boosts performance in several 3D applications. The following are examples of improvements measured with Release 182.06 WHQL drivers vs. Release 181.22 WHQL drivers (results will vary depending on your GPU, system configuration, and game settings):
    • Up to 8% performance increase in Fallout 3 at high resolution and AA.
    • Up to 10% performance increase in F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin
    • Up to 9% performance increase in Half-Life 2 at high resolution with AA.
    • Up to 11% performance increase in Left 4 Dead at high resolution with AA.
    • Up to 10% performance increase in Race Driver: GRID at high resolution and AA.
  • Includes full support for OpenGL 3.0 on GeForce 8-series, 9-series, and 200-series GPUs.
  • Automatically installs the new PhysX System Software version 9.09.0203.
  • Additional information on specific bug fixes can be found in the release documentation notes.

I put them in and they work fine except for my OFF problems...BTW, when I can play briefly before crashing, I am getting anywhere from 54 to 74 FPS.

Over50

Thanks for the links and the info. I've been meaning to update my drivers (I think I was using the originals that came with the card) I don't know if they improved my frame rate (surely didn't hurt em) but now FRAPS WORKS!! :woot:

Thanks,
Scott

A very big increase in FPS for me. Most noticeably when looking out the side of my cockpit from anywhere above 1000ft I'm now getting around 90fps where before I was getting around 50fps.

I had to redo all my cfs3.config, so it's possible I lost a setting in there that I had on before that was retarding my frames. But :woot:

Cheers O50. :)

I used to adhere to the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" axiom with respect to video card drivers...but as game graphics capabilities began to increase with successive game releases I've since become a convert to having the latest driver installed.

best tweak?

Wow! Installing this new driver is the best "tweak" I've ever done for OFF and CFS3. I've gotten an easy 10 fps increase!

My game runs very well with either the CD version (175.16) or the new downlaod 182.05 - the only problem I am having with both drivers, is neither one will display the Nvidia Control Panel.

Care to elaborate on the Nvidia control panel not displaying?

Are you saying there is no tab under Display Properties | Advanced button that takes you to a tab for your video card where you can open the control panel?

There is an icon for the Nvidia control panel in the lower right hand screen taskbar. There is an icon for Nvidia CP in the Windows Control panel. I can only get a small window from the taskbar icon that allows me to set screen resolution, refresh, color, and basic settings. When I attempt to bring up the Nvidia CP from that small window, the cursor briefly turns into an hourglass and then back to a cursor - no CP. This also happens when attempting to bring it up via the Windows Control panel icon. Other than that, the gameplay is fine.

Tech support from PNY has been rather non-helpful so far....

Strange...not heard of this one before. Have to ask - do you always uninstall the old driver before installing a new one?

Have you tried Ntune? It's a good application for tweaking Nvidia grahics cards and motherboards. I use it a lot as I have both. If you're interested, you can find it here..........

Been thru the whole routine several times uninstalling/re-installing from the CD driver 175.16 to the new 182.05 and sveral other procedures that are probably over my head (I'm not that bright). The card works well I know as the OFF game play is far superior to my old ATI rig. Just not able to bring up any control panel even tho all the icons/tabs are present everywhere I look for them.
