New Pacific missions by Dasuto247 released!

Reply...

Good morning,

I'm glad to see this discussion is taking the turn that I hoped for. If you are ever in need of mission ideas, take a stroll through the Simviation missions archive: http://simviation.com//cfs2missions1.htm

It would be really neat if someone wanted to take the initiative and worked on updating some of these old standards with new aircraft, using the newer airbases, and equipment. What's old would become new again.

In case you are unaware, Dasuto247, that's how I got my start. I learned how to build missions by updating the work of those who came before me. I did that for years before branching out more on my own.

Thank you dasuto247 and Blood_Hawk23. After all these years I figured I had just about everything there was.

I like it dasuto247. You must have put in a lot of work on this mission, and it shows. I flew it from beginning to ALMOST the end when I had a mid-air with one of the TBDs. One final thing: I have all of wolfi's scenery installed but cannot find: "wolfi_palm_05".

Ah, that will happen.During testing I made a perfect dive bombing run on one of the transports, set it afire, next hit by two others sunk it.After dropping me two 100 lb bombs, I cli after, an unseen F4F was right above me as I pulled up, we collided. So you made it to the target area? Attacked? How was that part? Not sure about the wolfi tree, should be in his objects packs.Ill see if can find it and will post it here if you would like.

I did enable warp to the initial point, 15 miles from the attack in case would like to give it another run without the real time flight there.I rarely use warp but did fly in accelerated time often.Just dont have spare hours to fly real time.

Glad you enjoyed the mission, I have another one releasing soon but from the IJN side.

Stoney,

Never heard of that object. The only palm tree that ends in _05 is LWD_palm_05. Could it have been hand-edited incorrectly?

Hmmm... could be, I'll check on the palm. Yes dasuto247, I think a warp would be advantageous to those that have limited time to fly a mission/campaign. The target area was just on the horizon when I blundered into the Torp. Not his fault as I was flying at x4 rate. I think the default SBD is too sensitive in pitch to fly at the higher simulation rate.

A new entry has been added to Add-Ons Library, category CFS 2 Missions Add-Ons

Description: This is a follow up to my Lae-Salamaua strike mission released last week.This time player flies in the role of a TBD Devastator pilot of Torpedo Squadron TWO from the USS Lexington for the 10 March 1942 strike on Japanese invasion forces at Lae and Salamaua, New Guinea.Player is leading a division of 3 TBD's flying last in line aka tail end charlie.Aside from dodging AA at low level from anchored ships and shore batteries, part of the challenge if flying the TBD at high altitude over the range.As per history the Lexington TBD's have torpedoes, Yorktown's have bombs.

However, warp is enabled to the target area and back over the mountains as a courtesy.

See the README for details.

Enjoy and let me know what you think.

How large is your collision bubble?

Ah, that will happen.During testing I made a perfect dive bombing run on one of the transports, set it afire, next hit by two others sunk it.After dropping me two 100 lb bombs, I cli after, an unseen F4F was right above me as I pulled up, we collided.......

Hi Dasuto and Stoney,

may I suggest to reduce the collision bubbles of all the aircraft involved?

If you use Morton/Ivan Hsu's mk_MDL utility, I have set most of all of my fighters to 5, slightly larger planes like the SBD or the TBD to 6, the P-38 and TBF to 7 and so on.

Test your new collision bubbles in Quick Combat and pause the action during furballs. You'll see that you can miss the other plane by mere inches, while you only collide with it if you really touch it.

In a CFS2 stock collision bubble you could fit a destroyer! It was one of the very first CFS2 bugs people tried to cure until this solution was found.

Cheers!

Lae 1942-Torpedo Squadron TWO

A new entry has been added to Add-Ons Library, category CFS 2 Missions Add-Ons

Description: This mission is a follow up to my Lae/Salamaua strike mission of March 10 1942. This time the player is put into the role of a TBD Devastator pilot from VT-2(USS Lexington) leading a division of three TBD's as the tail end charlie of the Lexington strike wave.The challenge aside from that of flying low and slow over armed, anchored invasion shipping and within reach of shore based AA, is flying the old TBD over the mountains of New Guinea.

Primary target is invasion shipping but if want a challenge such as a CA or CL, then just fly a bit off shore, will find them fleeing the anchorage.

Dasuto247,

I echo the comments of all in this thread. It is so awesome to have a new mission writer. Well done!

Dasuto247 - A couple of small requests and points...

Dasuto247,

First, please allow me to compliment you on the outstanding work you have done. As others have said, it is wonderful to have a new Mission Builder in the fold.

Second, including everything in your uploads is a wonderful thing. However, having said that, please remember that SOH's space is not infinite. If you are going to have a series of missions around the same theme, please include all of the missions for that particular theme in a single package, so that way it limits the amount of space required to store your package when you upload it.

As the SOH librarian, it's my job to think about these things.

Third, and I hate to tell you this...one of the things Talon did for me back in 2011 when I released my Defense of Australia Task Force campaign overhaul package was to do a seven-mission series called the "Coral Sea Task Force" which cover the exact same missions that you just uploaded for Lae / Salamaua. I didn't realize that before you uploaded them, otherwise, I would have said something.

"title_string"=Coral Sea Task Force - SBD strike on Lae
"summary_string"=Attention! Task Force 17 and Task Force 11 have joined together. The original mission was to attack Rabaul but has been changed. Japanese transports and their support vessels have been sighted near Lae. Both Yorktown and Lexington are sending out their bombers to attack them. You will be flying a SBD Dauntless dive-bomber equipped with one 500 and two 100lb bombs. Your targets vessels are the Kinugasa, the Kongo Maru, or the Sanagi.
"objective_string"=The USN Task Forces were located southwest of Port Morseby when they launched their strike. The aircraft launching from those carrier decks were forced to climb up and over the dangerous Owen Stanley Mountain range in order to attack.
"intelligence_string"=After getting airborne from the carrier deck, you will turn to the northwest and begin climbing. The Owen Stanley Mountains are tall obstacles in your flight path; the weather is often unpredictable. Once you've successfully traversed the mountains and near Lae airfield, your targets will be located just off the coastline. Good luck!
"player_aircraft_name_string"=Douglas SBD-3 Dauntless (VS-2)
"airfield_string"="Lexington CV-2"

"title_string"=Coral Sea Task Force - TBDs off Salamaua
"summary_string"=It's now March 10th, 1942, and the Lexington and Yorktown are launching their strikes against Lae and Salamaua. You'll be flying from Lexington in a Devastator armed with a torpedo. You're headed to Salamaua airfield. You will be flying over the Owen Stanley Range which will be difficult for the TBD Devastator. There will also be Wildcats and Dauntless dive-bombers joining you during this attack.
"objective_string"=The transports were sunk or heavily damaged, a destroyer was sunk, and a Mogami-class cruiser was attacked by the Dauntless dive-bombers. A lone 'Pete' float plane was also shot down by the F4F Wildcat escorts.
"intelligence_string"=It's been reported through scattered intelligence that there are Japanese transports and support ships at Salamaua. Your targets are the Akagimaru and the Kagero, so use your wingmen well to sink them to the bottom!
"player_aircraft_name_string"=Douglas TBD-1 Devastator
"airfield_string"="Lexington CV-2"

"title_string"=Coral Sea Task Force - SBDs off Salamaua
"summary_string"=It's now March 10th, 1942, and the Lexington and Yorktown are launching their strikes against Lae and Salamaua. You'll be flying from Lexington in a Dauntless armed with a 1000lb bomb. You'll be flying over the Owen Stanley Range. You will be joined by TBD Devastators armed with torpedoes and Wildcat fighters.
Your target is the Mogami-class cruiser, so use your wingmen well to help you sink her to the bottom!
"player_aircraft_name_string"=Douglas SBD-3 Dauntless (VS-2)
"airfield_string"="Lexington CV-2"

"title_string"=Coral Sea Task Force - Devastator strike
"summary_string"=It's March 10th, 1942, and both the Lexington and Yorktown are launching their strikes against Lae and Salamaua. You'll be flying from the Yorktown in a Devastator laden down with two 500lb bombs.
"objective_string"=On March 10th, 1942, enemy ships were sighted twenty-five miles due east-northeast of Salamaua. These ships included a seaplane tender (Kamoi), a Mogami-class Cruiser, a Kagero-class destroyer, as well as six transports. While these US carrier planes attacked, B-17 bombers also participated in the attack.
"intelligence_string"=Grumman Wildcat fighters will handle any enemy planes that appear while your formation dives on the Japanese convoy. Dauntless SBD dive-bombers will also participate in this convoy attack. Good luck!
"player_aircraft_name_string"=Douglas TBD-1 Devastator
"airfield_string"="Yorktown CV-5"

"title_string"=Coral Sea Task Force - Dauntless strike
"summary_string"=It's now March 10th, 1942, and the Lexington and Yorktown are launching their strikes against Lae and Salamaua. You'll be flying from the Yorktown in a SBD Dauntless equipped with one 500lb bomb and two 100lb bombs.
"objective_string"=On March 10th, 1942, enemy ships were sighted twenty-five miles due east-northeast of Salamaua. "player_aircraft_name_string"=Douglas SBD-3 Dauntless (VS-2)
"airfield_string"="Yorktown CV-5"

"title_string"=Coral Sea Task Force - Wildcat bomber escort
"summary_string"=It's now March 10th, 1942, and the Lexington and Yorktown are launching their strikes against Lae and Salamaua. You will be flying from Yorktown in a Wildcat to escort the bombers. You will also be carrying two 100lb bombs to attack any targets of oppertunity.
"intelligence_string"=Your main task is to deal with the reconnaissance 'Pete' scout planes that'll likely be on patrol over the convoy. If you do not find them or manage to bring down them all, you may use your bombs and ammunition to strafe the convoy. Good luck!
"player_aircraft_name_string"=Grumman F4F-3 Wildcat "VF-39"
"airfield_string"="Yorktown CV-5"

"title_string"=Coral Sea Task Force - A joint strike effort
"summary_string"=Attention! Enemy ships have been sighted north of Goodenough Island. The USN is sending a strike force of Dauntless bombers to attack it. You will be flying a Grumman Wildcat to protect them. You will be joined by the RAAF Hudsons and P-40s to participate in a joint attack.
"objective_string"=The continued presence of our carrier task force in the Coral Sea has allowed us to coordinate our efforts with RAAF 75th Squadron, allowing us to fly joint strike missions with them. These efforts were aided by the presence of Australian P-40 fighters, which would assist our F4F Wildcats in providing air cover for these attacks.
"intelligence_string"=After taking off from the carrier deck, you will fly a northeasterly course until reaching the coast of Goodenough Island. The enemy convoy should be off the coastline. You will cover the Dauntless dive-bombers as they attack the ships, while P-40s will be in the area giving cover for their Hudsons.
"player_aircraft_name_string"=Grumman F4F-3 Wildcat "VF-39"
"airfield_string"="Yorktown CV-5"

Okay, sorry I just uploaded them as I completed them. I will add all the Lae / Salamaua missions into a package, then you could delete the other Lae missions I uploaded, would that work better? I was not aware Talon had done those missions. Are you saying if someone has already covered it is not okay to upload them?
