New PC-build, VR woes

Mathias

SOH-CM-2024
Just got a new PC with Windows 11 build 24H2 pre-installed.
I was shocked to find out that M$ scrapped the Mixed Reality Portal, turning my HP Reverb G2 VR glasses into a useless piece of scrap iron.
Thank you Microsoft.
So if you got W11 and VR glasses that depend on the Mixed Reality Portal, do_not_upgrade_to_24H2.

Thanks Mathias ! I'm on the fench for W11. Have a HP Reverb G2 as well still with W10. Recently i have moved and not installed my G2 yet. (i kinda wait for MSFS2024 to be sort of stable..)

I use Mixed Reality as well of course. Do you perhaps know if it still works with W10 ? Or do i also better not bother to install my G2 ? I hope not...

Thanks ! :encouragement:

Yeah, my HP G2 died just before MSFS2024 came out. I bought a Quest 3 and never looked back. I "think" you can still use the G2 with Steam. Also, there is a new version of the free software OperXR that might work.

I just run the Quest 3 through Remote Desktop and it works like a charm. DCS is more difficult because it has to run through SteamVR, which IMO sucks.

Hi Jan,

Yes, it's still working with Win 10 and all Win 11 builds prior to 24H2.
So if you're allready running Win 11 and want to keep your Reverb G2 in working condition, do not update to 24H2.
I've read MS will drop the mixed Reality Portal alltogether sometime in 2026.
No comment from HP so far wether they by chance develope their own software environment to run their hardware.
Reverb G2 is most likely a deadend now.

Unfortunately, that won't work. Both Steam and OpenXR require you to have the Mixed Reality Portal installed for you VR glasses.
Would love to hear that I'm wrong though. :)

Really ashame that i probabely can drop my G2 into the garbage bin sooner or later, i was very happy with it although only flying GA or a warbird. It weren't exactly peanuts i payed for it neither..
Anyway, thanks again for the info, Mathias !

Do you see enough enhancement in the visual quality and performance compared to the G2, John ?

Thanks! :encouragement:
