New Scenery

Sure looks like Mount Pocano. I flew X-country there while working on my FAA Private Pilot license, and several times later. It's not far from Tobyhanna Army Depot, and Betts Army Airfield (closed since 1967). When I flew in isprin of 1966, the runway was about 1900 feet, but hard surfaced. The field has grown a bit since. No small jets then.

Ah, a Penn resident, too easy I guess. how far are you from the airport?

Ha! Kind of a lucky guess on my part. The intersecting runways and general layout looked familiar. MPO is about a 1.5hr drive north from our home. I've never flown into there IRL, but my wife and I enjoy vacationing in the Pocono mountains, and we've stopped by the airport on occasion just to plane-watch. It's a beautiful area of Pennsylvania, particularly in the autumn.

Thanks for working on another great airport, Ed. Keep 'em coming!

I'm originally from South Jersey and have had occasion to drive through that area in my younger years. It is a very scenic area and as you say, especially once the leaves begin to change. I had a question about the main hangar and was hoping you had been at the airport at some time and might be able to shed some light on it.

I'm looking for someone with Orbx Basic and Vector Landclass to test it. . .if you have that I can send you the scenery and give it a try. Just PM me if you want to give it a shot!

It's been about 2 years since we last visited the airport, so I'd be going only on my memory alone...but I'll try to assist if you have any questions about the hangar's exterior (never been inside).

I only have Orbx Basic...no Vector LC. If you need someone to test based solely on FTX Global, then I'd be happy to give it a try. Thanks.

Hello again, Ed! Thanks for cranking out these small airport sceneries! I don't have a powerful rig, which rules out flying in some of the more dense areas of the country, so it's nice to have places to fly out in the woods.

I have Orbx Vector and Landclass installed and wouldn't mind helping beta again, if you'd like. It's the least I could do after you built the Sky Ranch (TN98) for me!

My only question concerns what appears from the satellite imagery to be a bi-fold door opening on the side facing the T-Hangars. It's either that or a 40' long awning along that side, lol. I haven't seen any images that actually show that side of the hangar though.

Have you gone through all of the videos on Youtube? I searched "Mount Pocono, PA KMPO" and found a few. Some of them couldn't focus a camera to save their lives :biggrin-new: but there might be something in there?

I haven't gone through all of them but I have to agree about the camera focus, lol. I'm hoping to find just one who might be on a right downwind leg and briefly glance over to show that side. . .it would only take a single frame to verify one way or the other. Still checking.

Well, I think I have my answer. I found a video of a Cessna High wing landing on rwy 31 which puts the hangar on it's right. He had a Go-Pro attached to the left wing strut pointed towards the nose but giving a panarama type view. While it wasn't crystal clear, I saw enough to know it was definitely not another door as I thought but instead an added on section (maybe additional office space). So I'll have to make that change before I release the final scenery.

This may not be absolutely correct, but as a last resort I will email the Airport manager. If I don't get an answer then this pic is how it will look in my rendition.

Ed,
In addition to srgalahad's post, I've been combing the dusty corners of my brain trying to recall the specifics. I know they did some expansion at MPO in the last few years or so...and most of the clear shots of the main hangar I'm able to find online appear to pre-date those changes (when they built an additional hangar on the north side of the airfield). I think your main hangar rendition looks like a perfectly reasonable rendition based on my recollection. From what I'm able to find online...see below. Sorry I couldn't provide a definitive answer. Good luck.

Video from 2018 showing main hangar (with some fleeting shots of the main hangar wall in question around the 0:20 to 0:30 second mark - does not appear to be a door there, but does appear to be some sort of large tan shipping container adjacent to the outside hangar wall):

Video from 2012 showing south side of main hangar (however, this presumably pre-dates the expansion since there's no second hangar to the N of rwy 23):

Thanks Mark. I have emailed the airport to see if I can get an answer but I've done this probably 20 or 30 times while doing airports and I've had 2 that were interested enough to help. Most just delete the message and move on.

From the inside in those videos I don't see any indication that anything is on that side of the hangar so hopefully I get some help from the folks at the airport.

Right now I'm on hold because MCX has decided to spit out a weird error when I tried to compile the two hangars I had to make adjustments to. Arno is looking into it so I hope he has an answer soon. I was ready to release it till MCX put a hold on things.
