I have a question though:

Did these "artistic" paint jobs make any difference against attacks? Did they actually make enemy aircraft, ships or submarines job any harder?
 
One thing they did do was interfere with optical range-finding to a certain extent. For a gunnery officer on an enemy ship, this meant it was more difficult for him to determine whether the ship he was looking at in his range-finder was traveling at a certain speed, or opening or closing the range. It wouldn't have stopped him from eventually scoring a hit, but it would have probably taken him longer to score that hit, and blown through more of his ammo before doing so. In certain conditions, that may have given the camo'd ship the time it needed to duck into a friendly fog bank and escape.

Since submarine periscopes are range-finders as well, the same conditions and restrictions would have applied to them.

I also read that as a response to dazzle-painting in WWII (I think) German subs were equipped with special filters for their 'scopes that reduced the ship's image to a silhouette, which could then be easily tracked and thus negated any advantage the dazzle paint had. The same thing could have been applied to range-finders for surface warships.

The USN painted many of its ships in late WWII to try to confuse Kamikaze pilots as to their speed, direction, and even type. I don't know if any analysis was ever conducted re: its effectiveness, since the Kamikaze pilots who tested this theory could not comment on it - they were gone.
