New SOH format

The only difference I can find is that a few of the normal top menu items have been slightly rearranged. The colors and icon set are likely stock vBulletin items. I agree that the looks of it are a little mundane, but they don't hurt the eyes like some boards I've seen. The structure is identical to the previous software, so there shouldn't be much of anything to re-learn.

HD, look at the top-left under the new logo for the link to your PM's.
 
Not a critique, just an observation......

At least for me, clicking the "go to first new post" icon next to the thread title doesn't work, Just takes me to the first post in the thread. I can then click on the "go to first unread" link, and it works....
 
Looks fine to me. Clean and simple. Now take some time off:icon29:, let the grumblings fade:sleep:, then tweak a bit:bump: and you're there.:medals:
 
Hey, it took me two days to be able to get in, and I'm not grumbling. I ran a BBS many moons ago, and I know how much work it is. I think Ickie has done a grand job of keeping this place up, and have only gratitude for his efforts. If he feels it necessary to change formats, I support his decision.

Remember too that this is not as simple as just running a message board, but it also involves defending that board against the hackers and crackers that prowl the net, taking great joy in destroying everything they can. How many other boards have gone away because of these internet criminals?

So let's not fret if the colors have changed, or the graphics are a bit different, or if we have to learn a few new tricks. There is a lot going on behind the scenes that we do not see, but that is absolutely vital to the continued functioning of this board.

So three cheers for Ickie, and thank you for all your efforts to keep this board functioning while at the same time keeping the barbarians outside the gates.

If I am not mistaken, I do recall reading somewhere that Ickie has been waiting a long time to do something like this. What we have now is the result of that dream. He has done this for all of us so that we may further enhance our hobby.

I like the change that has happened and I look forward to when this changeover has been completed. Is everybody going to be happy with the change? No. That's understandable. Some people are comfortable with what we have had. From what I have seen so far, there have been a few changes in navigating the pages. It takes a little time to get used to it.

When it is all said and done, I am confident that the sim-outhouse is going to be better than ever. One of the best choices I have made was to keep coming back here because of the wealth of information that is provided and the help that I can get if I have what appears to be an unresolvable problem with FS9. I have had the opportunity to help others on a few occassions.

No matter what it looks like, the site remains ad-free, and is a gathering place for us to share our experiences. Cheers to Ickie and the entire SOH staff! :ernae:

At first I thought I was on the wrong site!

I like the new look and if it keeps use safe from hacking then that has got to be a good thing.

That Ickie has done / is doing a noteworthy job was never in doubt. It was simply the "surprise factor" that threw me off. I've been to the site several times since The Change, and now I can hardly remember how the old one looked.

It looks "tidier." Seems to be a stonger contrast in the graphics. I'll bet if one fiddles with the fonts size on their home pc, this new format may turn out to be easier to read than the old. I like it.

Same here. My recent encounter with OpenSolaris on my laptop caused SOH to be almost unreadable. that was the "old" SOH. Downloading the font package that wasn't included with the 2009.06 distribution solved the problem there.

While I haven't seriously played with fonts as yet (I find the readability just fine), I'll just wait until all the changes are in place then decide.
 
I don't know how many of you visit Avsim.net, but they got hacked and their data trashed almost a year ago IIRC. Things still aren't right there, a lot of good freeware and repaints that weren't available anywhere else are gone forever, but I have to give them kudos for the hard work since then to fix something that wasn't their fault. If a little time and hard work keeps that little rat-bastard :sniper: from doing that here, then I'm all for it!
 
What comes to the GUI the old one was OK with me and this new one is too. But as OBIO said earlier in this thread the "motor under the hood" is now more secure, faster and stable and that's what matters.

This new forum format / software took me about......well.......2 seconds to figure out. :sleep:

vBulletin is used all over the internet to run forums. Though it's never exactly the same from site to site, there is enough familiarity to figure things out quite quickly from site to site. At least for me.

Change is hard. But in such things it is helpful to share thoughts, and also appreciation. Thank you Ickie, amazing job, knowing how much is involved myself from being an admin somewhere else.

Re the Aesthetics. I prefer the blue background page for many reasons, visually it is much easeir on the eyes for the contrast is not as harsh. The solution? have several skins. Hopefully this is an option witt this new format and program. If not, i am just glad SOH has survived and is here. I am very grateful for it all.

Basides Paypal done me wrong before, an I think theyre in cahoots with Ferengi Bankers. Change is the only constant; most of us realize this, analise, adapt, and move on, natural selection takes care of the rest. Again, Great job, an you sir are THEE man. I love the new look, it's far more contemporary, whilst retaining a unique character for the site!

Can't wait to have the downloads section back.
