I saw the Zumwalt and the 2 follow-on ships of that class this past August during a tour of
Bath Iron Works. I was in Maine attending a reunion of my shipmates who served on the
USS Dewey, DLG-17...later reclassified as DDG-45.
I was on the Dewey in 1960-62. The Commanding Officer at that time was Cmdr. Elmo Zumwalt,
for whom this ship and class was named. He later became the Chief of Naval Operations
and was responsible for many innovative initiatives within the Navy.
As an old destroyer sailor, I can't say I am enamored with the looks of this vessel but,
in keeping with Admiral Zumwalt's legacy, it does employ many innovations!
The USS Dewey was also built at BIW, renowned for their ships since 1884. As a side note,
I also attending the commissioning ceremonies for the 'new' USS Dewey, DDG105 on
6 March 2010 at Seal Beach, California. That ship is the 3rd to bear the name but was not
built at BIW.
