New TIR Convert

OK. I've probably convinced myself to get this. One, possibly silly, question:
How do you aim? For instance in the ALb DIII (early) your sights are aligned with top centre of your windshield. If I move my head up or down I imagine that this will change? (Note: My head doesn't understand geometry. It's not my fault!)

As Siggi has said: Via F12 the bullet trajectory will be matched to your head position. When you first start with Trackir it's not at all uncommon to press F12 Ten times a mission, when flying a Sopwith. Much more with an Albatross where you have NO sight to reference

Even those who have used Trackir for years, F12 at the beginning of every mission:

Check all controls working, and correct ... Key F12 . . Start Engine :kilroy:

Guy's, i created my own profile, it's easy to do. In this profile i created a null zone or dead spot if you like, right in the middle where you look to shoot, ie through the target. That way when i'm in a dog fight and right on the enemies back side (therefore not looking around any more) my forward looking view for shooting is that little bit more stable for aiming. Then if i do move my head a fraction by mistake it won't spoil my aiming or shot.
Just copy the exsisting combat profile and rename it to OFF or whatever. Then play with all the options available, when your finished, select it as the profile to use and your away. I have the same profile for all my flying sims.

I assigned F12 as a button on my stick, that way its a lot easier to reach than running for the keyboard. After a good chase and fight I usually need to realign for the killing shot. I quess I move around in my seat more than I realize.

The thing is, even if you've got some parallax due to your head not being quite were it was originally, the 3D is good enough for you to sense this. The you can tell what to use as your aim point, or you can sit up straight again, or you can hit F12 to recenter the view to where you head is now.

But really, I find that I never have this problem because when I'm getting close to the point of firing, I'm habituated from years of shooting in real life to checking my sights. A quick glance down shows me if my head's off-center, by how much, and in which direction. So as I'm making the final move to reach firing position, I simultaneously adjust my posture and note out of the corner of my eye that I'm close enough to center by the time I pull the trigger. I find this very realistic :).

Of course, if you're totally paranoid, you can hit F6, which in most planes puts your eye right behind the sight on the weapon itself, instead of having to use the top center of the windshield :). But I find this a waste of time myself, because I see my tracers going out in a shotgun pattern instead of following the same line. Thus, even if you're dead on for aim, you're still going to miss a fair amount, but OTOH being a little off on the aim isn't going to be noticeably worse.

Just as I thought that maybe, just maybe, I had found one tiny problem with TrackIR that would reason against me splashing out on it AND looking magically silly in front of my screen you guys come along and rub that last spark of hope out.

- Oh well, what the hell, as McWatt was wont of saying. I'm ordering first thing tomorrow morning. Damnit.

Track IR help

Such great responses! Such great answers and help. I am going to order. BHAH with what I have seen and read in regard to the Trac can obviously improve my situational awareness. I can hardly wait. Thanks fellas. And what a boost to FSX!!!! I am sure there are those out there that partake of that once in a while also.

More of a 'cool things to see and do in OFF' than a tip, but using TIR lets you aim down offset gunsights by moving your head. Presumably this is important for the Bristol Scout, but that gun on the Eindecker has sights that you have to lean right to sight down.

I can no longer fly without my TrackIR. It feels so natural its strange. If I watch someone else's video I find myself trying to "look around" their video. Sometimes I do it on any video not just the game videos. It is probably the best thing to happen to flight simming since the flightstick. Anyone who can afford it, I urge you to get it. The other thing is after you get it, give it a chance. I've unfortunatley heard alot of people say they bought it and don't use it for one reason or another. You have to give it some time. Eventually it becomes second nature. Even though the early trials are very disorienting, its because you're now interacting in 3D as opposed to the 2D you've been used to for so long. If you can, BUY IT, USE IT, CHANGE YOUR SIMMING EXPERIENCE.

Cheers,

John

Just had my first QC with Trackir last night, to check it out. Seems very promising, but I'm stumped by one problem that I can't seem to solve after reading all the posts, manual, etc:
No matter how I set up the Trackir, my virtual head in the me won't swivel correctly. It's A-OK when I swivel right to look at my right wing, and if I keep swiveling I can see my tail and 6:00 just fine, but when I swivel left I can get only to about 9:00 before the view snaps to a straight-overhead view of my wicker pilot's seat! Recentering (F12) doesn't help, nor does fiddling with the L-R placement of the Trackir monitor, the trackclip, turning out all the lights in the room, etc. I'm using the straight-from-the-box "Combat Flight" profile, as Bullethead suggested, set to run minimized and to run with all sims. Solutions?:help:

When it does that it's usually because the TiR unit has lost sight of the reflector on your head.

Trackir is a bit of a vampyre, in that it strongly dislikes bright lights, especially sunlight. That includes reflected light, so if you're folically challenged (Bald), cover that chrome dome, it has been known to cause problems.

If you're starting using Trackir, you'll feel abit woosie, not to worry, it happens to everyone, you'll quickly become used to it. But I'd advise in the beginning you keep a pail handy, just in case.
There was a guy who bought Trackir , for use in Phase 1. He had flown every sim since CFS1, he used Trackir and lost his lunch all over his keyboard. Turns out he would get violently airsick, Who Knew ??? The following day he took out an Ebay Ad.

People have actually asked here, where they can buy Dramimine wholesale, so there must be a need.
I've heard of many temporary cures, from pills to wristbands. I'd say see an MD, if so afflicted.
Then use Trackir

One common problem the beginner complains of, is their inability to get the exact sight alignment, to head position, during a dogfight.

Just get it close, and hit the (F12) Key. The sights will center themselves to match Your Head Position. Beginners will get real familure with F12

PS . . It's always good to F12 it when the mission starts

I've found the optimum position for the camera unit, to be about 4 inches off the left corner of my monitor

You need to align the receiver properly, and if you do not have the TrackIR pro clip make sure it in in the middle and algined (use the View, Heads to check it).

I'd check out the naturalpoint forums they have this issue a lot and the guys there can help sort it - just needs some aligning etc.
