New Tracers for CFS3 - A full overhaul of CFS3 tracer effects.

Included in this download are tracer effects for 178 WWII era weapons. These are organized by country, though many of them were used by multiple nations. This includes guns ranging from light machine guns to heavy anti-aircraft and anti-tank guns. Information on tracer ammunition, and particularly the colors used is somewhat sparse and often conflicting, so I make no claims to this being 100% accurate. Many of them are just a guess. There are many more guns than we currently have in CFS3...

I decided to take a short break from my front-burner projects (for my sanity's sake!) and reworked all of the tracers. I got a little carried away and created one for almost every WWII machine gun, cannon, anti-aircraft gun, or anti-tank gun that I could find evidence for using tracers. Available information is often conflicting on tracer usage, color, etc, so I'm sure this is not 100% accurate, but it will add a lot of variety and is at worst within the realm of reasonable possibility. A lot are for weapons we don't yet have, but if anyone ever wanted to make a slew of light and medium AA guns for example;), they would find a ready made tracer effect for that gun.

The appearance represents my attempt to make the best of the very limited mechanics CFS3 offers for tracers. I tried to mimic the appearance as it would look to the naked eye, so they are shaped more like colored streaks of light, with some detail work to hide the drawbacks of CFS3 rendering as well as possible. X-shapes hidden as well as I can by tapering the front end, and the round end texture blending as seamlessly as possible into the long side texture. The width is proportional to the caliber of the round up 37mm. 37mm and above are all the same since they usually shared the same size tracer element. The length is proportionate to muzzle velocity. So this should result in a wide variety of combinations or shapes, sizes, and colors gracing the angry skies. The smoke is the most I can make a 1,000 meter x-shaped stick look like a trail of smoke.

Have fun!

I find they look better live than in a screenshot.

I really appreciate the amount of work this represents. The debate now will be if I want to fully integrate this into the base game, or try to create it as an optional JSGME mod. Either way, if will be many hours of hobby time to update all the aircraft xdp files in 24 custom installs.

I got a parsing error using the effects text provided. The problem is with the section headings, in that they can't have spaces.

So, for example <START GECKO TRACERS/> needs to be changed to <START_GECKO_TRACERS/>

I added those tags at the last minute to help people keep their effects xml organized but didn't add them in my own install. Whoops. A fix will be up once it's approved.

I don't see it in the sample pic you posted, but all of mine have this weird bright center line, with a surrounding colored glow. Is that what you intended?

p.s. It appears to be an artifact of the side texture being displayed as two copies crossing each other at 90 degrees. This adds the light strip down the middle to itself making it appear very light compared to the rest of the texture.
