Non-working GSL editor in MB

Shessi

SOH-CM-2025
Hi Folks,
Following on from the posts in Rami's Athens GSL probs. I wanted to make some damageable items, so fired up MB but cannot get the GSL editor to work, pressing Ctrl+Alt+Shift+G, does nothing.

Any ideas, or options? I've looked at Rhumba's damable objects zip on his Skydrive, so if MB GSL does not work is it hand editing scasm?

Cheers

Shessi

Hi Shessi,

You are correct. Activating the MB GSL Editor does not set off any bells or whistles. Nevertheless, when you enter the keystroke command Ctrl+Alt+Shift+G the MB GSL Editor does become active. Remember also that with a keystroke command like this, the Ctrl+Alt+Shift keys are held down together and then the G key is clicked once before releasing them. Try starting the editor Ctrl+Alt+Shift+G, adding some objects, saving Ctrl+Alt+S, deactivating the editor and then fly the location in FF. The objects you added will be there.

BTW, thanks are due to Lindsay "Leroy10" Watt who doped out the existence of this editor and shared with us how to use it! Thanks, Lindsay!

MR

PS I may not have understood you correctly. Do you want to create damageable objects? Or just use the MB GSL Editor to place damageable objects and save them to the GSL? The MB GSL Editor is not a tool for creating the objects. That needs to be done with a programs like GMAX and yes I think some hand editing of scasm code could enter into the process.

the only time you will get a message is if you try to save and the GSL editor is "OFF". otherwise you will not get a message. It was a bit unnerving for me the first time i used it.

here is what i do.

as MR said hit and hold [ctrl] + [alt] + [shift] then hit [G].

do the work that you want to add.

hold [ctrl] + [alt] then hit to save.

hold [ctrl] + [alt] + [shift] then hit [G] again to turn off the editor.

and finally hold [ctrl] + [alt] then hit again.

you now know that the editor is infact closed.

don't forget the part i mentioned about adding trees. if you don't put the scenery detail in settings to "extremely dense" you wont see them when you go to free flight. i thought my MB wasn't working right the first time i used it. i'd have buildings but no trees. it took 3 of us to figure out that i had my settings to low. kinda funny now.

if your adding the scenery to a small area (like trees for example) and you want to add alot in another area just save the layout.

hit [shift] + [W] to save it.

hit [shift] + [L] to load it. there is a box in the bottom of the popup field. if you check it it will place it in the location that they were origonaly placed in. leave it unchecked and you can put them any where.

just a few extra points to help.

till later,
John

Thanks guys,
Well, as they say, you learn something new every day! Searching all articles and posts on the internet, you're the first people to say that nothing shows up or indicates that the GSL editor is active (which is pretty stupid!), so thank you for that.

And yes MR, thats' what I wanted to do, I have misunderstood what MB does, I thought that it created damageable objects, and placed them as required, obviously not.

I use FSDS, also have Gmax, but FSDS is easier if a little limited, I've not found a way yet to make an item damageable in FSDS, is it scasm and hand editing time?

Cheers

Hiya Shessi,

WRT there being no indication by MB that the GSL editor is either active or inactive: the reason isn't stupidity. It was intentional. MS never intended for the MB GSL Editor to be used. It was an undocumented, unmentioned tool that MS for whatever reason decided should remain out of sight and therefore out of mind. Probably for the same reason that the default view in Windows explorer is always with file extensions and system files hidden. MS doesn't want the natives unintentionally gumming up the works.

It was Lindsay "Leroy10" Watt who doped out that there, behind the scenes in MB, lurked a GSL Editor- there had to be- and he figured how to use it.

WRT building damageable objects- there is a very select group of guys around here who know how to do it- and do it well. Interestingly, I must point out once again, that it was Lindsay Watt who first doped out how to make scenery objects damageable and who released the very first pack of from-scratch "dynamic" scenery objects- as opposed to the strictly "static" API macro-based objects that had been available until then.

I have never learned to make scenery objects. But as I said there is a top-drawer bunch of scenery object designers around here that can offer guidance. You might try visiting Lindsay Watts own website. He might have a forum devoted to the topic over there. Sorry but I don't have the link handy at the moment.
