North American FJ-3 Fury

According to "Scrubby" this aircraft is compatible with FSX, SE, P3D all versions which makes my work all the more rewarding that it can be shared by the whole community with the exception of X-plane. I actually found this by accident I believe at Flightsim (don't quote me) looking for 1930's Navy bi-planes for the USS Saratoga which has a thread here, too. Anyway, it is quite a nice aircraft externally as well as having a very nice VC. I have not flown any CARQUALS in it yet planning to do some FCLPs first to get the hang of it. Since then I have tweaked the nose which was a little to follow in the original texture but after a couple of tries it is totally accurate now. Here are some new screen shots from this morning

VF-173 fresh from North American Aviation ready for a paintjob in squadron colors

I managed to get the gray and keep the stencils by inverting the blue texture in Photoshop which didn't turn out badly. I had to do some cut and paste of things like jet exhaust and tires but that was not difficult. Now for the hard part. LOL! More later.

VF-173 Fresh Out of The Shop

Here are three shots of the A.F. Scrub FSX FJ-3 Fury repaint I just completed (12 hours later LOL) of the VF-173 204 at NAS Alameda ready for deployment aboard the FDR 1957.

Looks good. Would it be correct to assume that those are rams horns that are painted around the nose air intake ??

Again, very nice.

I am working on the aircraft.cfg file for P3D4. Anyone got a good setup for launch assist add in for NIMITZ Class AI?

Right now I have:

[launch_assistance] //my add; numbers may need corrections
launch_bar_pivot = 16.33, 0.0, -6.497//1/2 wheel radius to bottom of NLG wheels (.6068 ft radius. bottom --6.80
launch_bar_lug = 16.33, 0.0, -6.80//bottom of NW tire

Doesn't seem to engage using SHIFT+U feature

Ram Horns

Looks good. Would it be correct to assume that those are rams horns that are painted around the nose air intake ??
I believe so. It is part of the squadron markings that I found on a few different places which is what I used plus a photo to do the repaint. The prints show the rams horns not meeting on the top, BUT the real photo does so I had to amend them during the repaint as well as a few other discrepancies I corrected with the help of the photo.

Very nice. Is it just me or does the F-86 and FJ-3 look naked without a color band around the fuselage? It seems like the a/c designers
purposely designed it so that a band would accent the overall design! This looks to be another great addition to the hangar.

Seems so

If not all squadrons, most of them had that color band around the fuselage. Two examples I found are VF-24 in gull gray no band and VF-73 also gray in 1957 at NAS Oceana with no band. I may do this next with its interesting paint.

Just FYI (if you're in this thread you like the Fury, and the DCS Forum is not as trafficked as this one is....), if you're also a DCS flyer, I've created this skin for DCS F-86F. Ok...back to FSX...sorry to interrupt the regular schedule programming!

Thank You

Thank you for sharing, nice paint. Never got into DCS and was disappointed when FSX At War fizzled out. I do have both it and also CCP and I have CCP installed and it works great.

VF-211 Checkmates

Interesting Squadron! In 1955, the Red Checkertail Squadron was established flying the FJ3 Fury as part of CVG-21. The Checkertails were assigned the first number in the designation series which was VF-211. The airwing deployed in 1956-57 on The USS Bon Homme Richard with VF-211 Checkertails, VA-212, VF-213, and VA-215. Shortly after their return to Moffett in 1957, the VF-211 Red Checkertails traded in the FJ3s for the F8U1 Crusader. (Another thread on here...) I wanted a challenge to see if I could do justice to their "Checkertails" and worked on these all day just finishing with a 2 hour break in between for Church this evening and an hour for dinner before that. I'm pleased with the results shown here as the sun sets at NAS Alameda, CA.

The sun really brightens up the "Light Gull Gray" and shows how its difficult for a modeler to determine color especially when working with B/W period photos.

Your work looks great on the Fury, are they available for us to download? Has anyone done any improvements to the cockpit/panel for this Fury?

Thank You

To answer the questions...I will upload the repaints that I have done when I am finished checking them out for accuracy, one more I think I'll do if I have time. Otherwise I will upload these three. As far as I know no one has done another panel. If you are a 2D panel person, you could upload the panel from the Section8 F-86 and it would probably work. The VC in this looks pretty good to me. I might check it out further and also compare it myself with the S8 F86. If I think its missing popups, I have a reprint of the real FJ-3 Fury pilot's manual explaining all the panels and I have created 2D popups in the past for the G7 S2F also from the real manual. Before Dino made his fantastic accurate E2 Hawkeye I had done this as an upgrade for the Abacus E2C the only game around for a long while when I was with the Virtual CVW-3 a few years ago. Lately I have been having more fun creating than flying and need to get back to that part of the fun.

Fj-3 Fury Complete

I decided that I was moving on with the next aircraft which will soon be a thread here. Evolving from each of these three squadrons into their next "mount". I have uploaded the three textures into the Warbirds library for you to enjoy. I had a lot of fun researching and repainting. Be sure to get "Scrubby's" FJ3 Fury here in the library and don't forget to keep an eye on Klaus' carriers thread for release to have one to land on. Have fun.
