New computer, Windows 7. I made a change using notepad to get rid of the opening movie in CFS2. After I made the change, I can't get out of notepad without the change reverting back.

Have you turned "user account controls" off? (see control panel) That might help.

If you placed CFS 2 in the C:>Program Files (89)> Microsoft Games > CFS 2 (Where Windows 7 wants to put it) you'll suffer from your computer thinking it must interfere with almost everything that you do.

1. Copy and paste the file you want to work on, put it on the desktop and then modify it. Save it and then cut and paste back to the original folder and overwrite.

2. Option 2 is to place CFS 2 outside of the Program Files (89) folder.

Yeah...that user account control doesn't like you messing with the CFS2 cfg file/s. Vista is the same, if you can get into an administrator account...and change the read-only/permissions, that's how I got around it.

The other option, and the one I happen to prefer, is to right click on your Microsoft Games folder where you have all of your CFS2 installs located.
In properties, click on the "Security" tab. Then click on "Edit". Then highlight your profile name and Administrators and check the "Full control" box under the "Allow" heading.

Now, click on the "Advanced" tab below that box. In here you look at your profile and Administrators profiles and make sure that it says Allow under "Type" heading and Full control under "Permissions" heading and gives those permissions to "This folder, subfolders and files" under the "Apply To" heading. If it does not, click on the "Change settings" tab and give yourself those permissions here.

Once done, close out of that and restart your system and you will have editing permissions for every single file in ALL of your CFS2 installs.

When you install a new CFS2 into that main folder, it inherits the permissions and you will have edit rights to all files in that new install. If not, then you now know how to get them.

This way, you do not have to open your PC to not having UAC on. UAC is a first line protection for your computer against hacking. I prefer to have mine turned on.

PS
During the above process, you will see it run through folders and files giving you permissions on them. Just let it run through them. If you have a bunch of installs, it may take a few seconds/minutes. Also, it will give you error messages on air files and mdl files. Just click on "continue" and let it run its course each time. Once it is done, airedit and mdl converters will also work on these.

Definitely the best option there, I use Devildogs method and the only problem I have with CFS2 on Windows 7 seems to be with 'complex' panels (I.E. Ones with mirrors) blacking out when you use them. I just simply replace them with alternatives.

The only other problem related to cfs2 is that model converters don't work on the 64 bit version of windows. I'm praying a 64 version will be released at some point

Yes...and i do love my mirrors, so CFS2 gets very little play in my Win7/64. I just keep the action in WinXP.
