O/T Monitor Question

What causes the shadow effect on text? I've seen it both in Excel and in the flight sim. Could this mean that the monitor is going out? I've also had some weird experiences with FSX with the A2A B-17 when switching views the scenery becomes distorted and the screen turns black, but I can still hear the sound from the flight sim.

Once or twice I've had that happen (shadowed text), and traced the fault to a monitor connection on the back of the computer that was slightly loosened. In my case I've got an adapter between the monitor's male plug and the female in the back of the computer. If this assembly is not exactly square with the back of the computer, that little shadow will appear, but a quick adjustment and retightening of the mounting screws will set things right.
