OASU - VX-8 - VXN-8 The Connie Years

gray eagle

SOH-CM-2026
Good Ken Burns like documentary with some background tunes that bring back the memories.
Around frame 0817 you will see a picture of a connie with a big hole in its tail, think that was one of the Blue Eagles that
must of been shot by ground fire from RVN.

Yes, the one with the hole in the tail was "444". It took a VC mortar round during one of the attacks on Tan Son Nhut a month or two before I got there in '66. The aircraft had been repaired by the time I got there. I crewed on "444" almost exclusively, flying every other night, for my first 6-month TDY with OASU DETWESTPAC. We had two aircraft there at Tan Son Nhut and we alternated the flying duties. On my second TDY in '67 I crewed on "627" out of DaNang. We only had the one aircraft up there so we flew every night.
