Just when you think you have everything running some what better...

You get a message from the Hosting company. Short story they need to move us to a new server. I have been working with them to plan a good date for all concerned. Here is what we have come up with as a schedule.

    1. November 4th 17:00 -5UTC shut off the forums and start backup proceedures. During this time there will be no access to the forums or the Resource Section.
    2. November 5th Continue with Backups and download same until complete.
    3. November 6th 7:00 turn over server to hosting company to move system to new server
    4. November 7th - 8th restore backups and upgrade forum software.

If all goes well we should be back online on November 8th.

To keep you updated we will post updates on AVSIM forums.

    Thank you for your support.

OFF TOPIC: Flight Sim vs Real Life...

Today we (me and 2 of my kids...) had a chance to visit the B-17 Sentimental Journey here in Hamilton, Ontario. She is up here for a couple more days and figured it would be good to check out the B-17 up close.

It cost an extra $5.00 for me and the oldest kid...the youngest is 9 so she was free. The $10 was well worth it. As we approach the guy dealing with the tour said I may have a hard time getting to the back as the bomb-bay has a very narrow path but said give it a go...worst thing would be going back out the front. At 6'3" and 310lbs it didn't look good I got there. Took two tries to squeeze my fat butt through those 2 beams...I think it shaved off about 2" of my belly but I did make it.

What I thought was funny about the whole experience is how we relate to Flight Sim's. Something that isn't really that easy to see is the actual size limitations these planes have in the real world. When I was looking at the cockpit from inside...it amazed me how small it was. I swear I would have had more room in my 1991 Hyundai Scoupe. Then checking out the ball gunner and the tail gunner...no thank-you. You couldn't pay me enough to sit in either place well somebody is trying to shot the crap out of you.

When we think of flight sim's we want good flight models...realistic gauges...realistic weather...etc...but I never once thought about how cramped or uncomfortable those old planes would have been sitting in my huge office car at my big desk with tons of elbow room.

My oldest and I were also comparing the size of the Lancaster to the B-17...they were parked side by side before the B-17 went up for a flight. The Lancaster sits higher but is a little shorter and has a smaller wing span. It was also cool hearing the difference between the 4 radials against the 4 V-12's...very cool day.

Did you get a look at the bomb bays in both? Very different approaches to stowing ordnance!

Yes the bomb bays are totally different in the way they store their bombs. It was very cool to see the 2 of them so close together.

My older one and I can't get over the noise difference between the two of them though. The B-17 is a lot quieter than the Lancaster...I am wondering if it is because all exhaust exits out of one tube which has a blow on it for each engine. That must muffle the sound some because our B-25 have is super loud too...

There were a couple of Mustangs at the beginning of the week...wished they would have stayed for the weekend.

Nice piece...I took myself and a friend through another b17 at another airport nearby, Kitchener. I had no idea there was not much room in it especially what I called the "tight room" there has to be like 10 inches from sidewall to the bar thing. Ya I guess we never think how much room you have there.

That's why you have air shows. To allow people to get inside and see what they are like...
