OFF's Flight model is Excellent. Watch this.

I've seen some folks here questioning OFF's flight model and the ability of these planes to rudder skid as they do in combat and/or emergency maneuvers. I've flown in similar aircraft and find the flight model to be extremely accurate. But don't take my word for it, how about Ernst Udets!! Take a look at this maneuver...and this is deadstick..with the engine off! Where do you thik he learned to do this?? WWI baby : ).

http://dumpalink.com/videos/Ernst_udets_amazing_landing-5j14.html

In fact I performed the same maneuver..(engine on of course, so for a little longer) to both evade opponents fire at low level, and to get them in my gunsights...of course you need to know the threshold so you dont milk it too long and stall.

Anyhoo..once again "Excellent work OFF team!!, you nailed it and it feels-and flies like it should"!!

No no no, according to some of the experts at SimHQ, OFF's FMs and DMs are strictly arcade.

Sorry, that should have been 'experts'.

Arcade vs Realism

Too much "realism" not necessarily a good thing, lol -- will the day come when sim vendors put shock leads to your body so when you die, u get a jolt?

Seriously, I like a balance. Too much realism, and you gotta puch 50 keys just to get airborne and a shot off. Too much arcade, and it's just point n shoot, as child's game.

Gotta have a credible, challenging and enjoyable blend of both, just my opinion.

Why not have both, where if you like true realism (like me) you can select it, but if you wanna fly around with Snoopy in an arcade...you can select that too.....wait a minute...they did that. You can. Thanks OFF team for not selling us "Realists" down the river!!!

when you bring out a quality product like OFF... You have to address the needs of the masses!..OFF does that perfectly, and if the experienced WW1 fighter Pilots of SimHQ don't like it, and want more realism..may I suggest, they cover themselves in Petrol, light it...and jump off a 15,000 ft Building?....Perhaps that would be 'real' enough for them?:faint:

For me, it feels real, then it`s realistic, then it has a lot of realism! And realism means immersion too, to me. And OFF is immersive. All the others saying OFF is not realistic modelled, should show me a realistic, and effordable simulation off WW1 aerial combat.

regards

Yes, and a lot of them are probably IL2 players...which has very unrealistic Uber AI (imho)

Nah, what they want is an expert's declaration the FMs are 99% real to life, then they can all start trotting out their collections of NACA charts and frapping themselves until they're blue in the face. Just like they did with IL2.

"Wing-lift is 3.67% out on the Bf109, G-model (but only without the Mk108 gunpods). Get me, I is l33t innit."

Well we can bicker this topic ad infinitum. All I'm saying is the MAIN reason I like OFF so much, and always have IS the option for absolute as possible realism. (I mean if you dont like realism anyway, why play a WWI sim, go fly little imaginary spaceships and shoot lasers at each other, why should it matter really?) But for those of us who want it "as real as we can get it"...Thanks OFF team, a million thanks....you've done it beautifully. This was the intent of my first post after all, to show just how well you have captured it!!! Again...thanks. And in your genius, you've also included the option for these non-realism folks to tick a few boxes and toddle off and shoot down fairies if they like. Thats great too. Just another thanks though for not forgetting us "True Realism" fans. I guess I need to start saving my cash to develop the technology that gives you that "pit of your stomach" in-flight feeling, cause other than tracker IR, thats the only thing that can make this experience any better.

I know, I know, I know whats coming next from the "Arcadians". "Well then, if realism is so important, why dont you just hook up a gun to shoot you when you get hit...huh...huh?" Hehe...ok. I'll make a deal with you. I'll set it up,and you test it first. : )

I fly 100% realism all the time..just me and a map..But, there has to be some good old fashioned fun too!..It's not just about realism...it's a computer game at the end of the day, and it needs to be fun!

Total realism after all (if WW1 statistics are to be believed) involved crashing and killing yourself during training.... death by Influenza... or shot down and burned to death in your first combat!...hardly fun eh? :ernae:

This was the exact kind of dawdle I was looking to avoid. No one is advocating a "death by influenza" patch now are they.

ZZ.

No one's advocating TOTAL realism, cause its not possible, but then there is the "ear infection due to extreme altitude changes in aerial combat" patch that I'm working on. Geeeeeeeeesh.

By the way, you are absolutely right Olham. : )

I think it only natural, in any community with a competitive attitude, that definitions need to be set to take account of any bragging rights that are claimed.

In this one "realism" sets a certain standard. "I've just got my fifth kill, I'm an ace!" Yes, but under what settings? Is your claim valid and to be respected by your simming peers?

That was always the major concern of my DiD standard. Probably elitist tommy-rot to those who cared not, but we never abused those who prefered the arcade experience. We just didn't let them join the club. "Gah on, feck orf attah it!"

My settings are 100R, but as that level can be reached in various ways via the settings I'm sure there's plenty of fertile ground for a big barney. And there are settings that don't impact upon the level at all, such as TAC and labels. It's a DiD minefield.

I did try to make the 100R as fool proof as possible but if there are some obvious poor setting combos that still add up to 100% then kindly let me know as I will fix that - try it let me know. BTW 110% I believe is maxed out but I think 100R is as good as dammit for relativity. And 17 hours logged at 100R and kills claimed at 100R are to my mind as 'real' as OFF can be in P3 at the moment and thus 'worthy' ....I will not comment on what the future may bring ;)....

And yes the realism rating was added in P3 so that claims and log files had meaning and a base of reference directly pertaining to settings..... lets see how it is in P3 over time!

Well put Siggi. And Winder, I will simply re-iterate....Excellent work! :)

PS. No dis-respect intended UK Widowmaker, (posts can always come across with an "unintended air" about them) we are all bretheren here, and I'll buy any of you guys a beer when you're in town. We just debate cause we all like OFF so much. Its natural.

Cheers!!

When I ran DiD for SH3 a lot of stuff had to be taken on trust. The same would be true of OFF, namely for those functions that aren't calculated (TAC, labels, ticker-tape etc).

The thing with DiD, in it's various guises (different sims), was that I set each standard in a dictatorial fashion, based upon my own analysis of what was 'right' or 'wrong' (with reasons fully explained). Members were free to have their say, and on occasion my mind was changed on some point or other. But once it was finalized that was it, and members either 'signed up' or didn't.

Just for the crack I'll formulate one for OFF and post it up.
