Ok, everyone please grab a seat...

Who actually cares? The "support" MS gave to FSX was laughable at best, and entirely useless at worst.

It's truly a case of "Much ado about nothing..." :icon_eek:

Sure, most of what we consider support will not be missed but what about product activation when you re-install FSX? What I get from the AVSIM news update is that MS will continue to support it but for how long? When I buy a new PC let's say 5 years from now, P3D might be the only option if FSX product activation is no longer supported.

I'm sure there will be a way around the activation, if that day comes.

FSX is an old and niche software, this was very predictable. Every MS product in the past has had the same fate.

theres been a workaround for the activation since FSX came out .... so not exactly much need to jump onto the rumor and worry bus really :kilroy:

There is always P3D, but don't enjoy yourselves using it, it is NOT for entertainment purposes. :pop4:

I was thinking on this yesterday, lol... I love flying. I love learning to fly. I love simming. Will I be arrested? If I like my work, is that entertainment? Is an actual fighter pilot job a form of Entertainment? What if a real world flight instructor really loves his job, so much so that its almost pure entertainment for him rather then like that of a job?

lol...

We have Prepar3D. Things are ok. FSX was abandoned years ago already, so why be worried now. Once MS would launch a sim, they usually cut off any further work on it, basically abandoning it, except for purchasing customers, some basic customer service. But updating the product line and getting rid of bugs was perhaps done with one, maybe 2 updates and that was it.

P3D has their latest new version, Build 1.4. No updates needed. New shader technologies. Uses all the FS2004 and FSX file systems and addons. A very very nice replacement and its in active, continuous development, constantly being polished and improved, its performance always being enhanced...

Bill

Bill, I agree. To be honest, I have never used Microsoft for a single support issue with FS going back to my first use of the platform in FS5. Most of us have a good bit of working knowledge of sim issues or can tap a very broad network of people online to sort through problems if need be. I still think FSX has a lot of life left in it to serve for years to come but the P3D platform is another option which I think will become cheaper/more accessible as time goes on. IMO, this move by MS is a non-issue.

Reactivation is my only concern as I believe the support ended when Phil Taylor left MS. Although there are "alternative" methods to activate FsXA, they are not legitimate and that would worry many people.

You are legally allowed (although it is hazy) to backup your software. This includes altering .exe files to not require original discs. In other words. -- if you own FS X, there is no problem in using No-CD .exe's.

Besides that-- did FSX ever use online activation? I cannot recall. If not, all the checking is done on the user end and requires no validation from an external server.

FsX doesn't require any disk to run and on-line activation is required.

Activation is a licencing issue, not a support issue. The process of activating Microsoft products isn't going away right now and FSX is just an entry in their database.

Perhaps now that they are distancing themselves from flight sims they will allow Lockheed to sell P3D as a consumer entertainment product.

If you read the forums there have been a number of cases where FsX re-activation has been an issue. This has been cited as MS no longer supports FsX. I hope that MS will see this as a blunder and will continue to activate or re-activate FsX as and when required.

All the hashing aside, Microsoft could also release new .EXE files for all involved, and pertinent to the installation of FSX, SP1/2, Acceleration to eliminate the activation issue once and for all.
If they are if fact abandoning it all together, this way should be the best way for them to close the door.
