I used to live very close to the BOMARC missile site in North Bay, Ontario. My father was stationed at CFB North Bay's SAGE (Semi Automatic Ground Environment) complex in the mid 60's.

I helped build the Tank trail at NJ BOMARC in 1972.

I was with The 104th Engr. Bn of NJARNG in 1972 and we had a D7 bulldozer stuck in the swamp just below the old silos. I remember that a few of us were sick for a few hours after retrieving the dozer. The BOMARC site was still guarded at that time and the rumor was that a bird had went hot and couldn't be recovered. We used to joke with the armed Air Force guards and their dogs at the main entrance as it had the only public phone for miles. There was a full size dummy BOMARC at the entrance to the base along route 539. Seven Flags is now located just down the road.:salute:

As a kid of the Cape during it's golden years, if there was a model of something being launched from there I probably built it.

I had the Bomark kit and the very similar Snark kit. I think I built the Snark a couple of times.

These posters are original USAF posters from the late 50's and early 60's that used to hang in the USAF Tech Lab down in Cocoa Beach. That's where my father's office was. Sorry I couldn't get all the text on them. My scanner isn't that big.

A Navaho launch from the Cape. This was my favorite of this bunch. It was just more bad*ss looking compared to the other two. :)

Forgotten trivia:
The runway in FSX called the Cape Canveral Skid Strip (KMXR) was originally built for the return landings of missles like the Snark and Navahos.

Aw geez, being a Canuck, the image of that Bomarc brings back some decidedly unpleasant memories.

Back in the late Fifties, a Canadian company (Avro) built the CF-105 Arrow. Marvelous plane with bags of performance in its unmodified state, and plenty of potential for expansion.

The pea-pickin' Canuck government cancelled the program. Moreover, they had ALL of the existing aircraft destroyed and melted down.

So then, instead of the Arrow, we bought Bomarcs. What a bargain that was! Sigh!

Dan,

I had the Estes model of the BOMARC too, must have been back in the early 70s. I filled in all the pores in the balsa wood and cardboard so that it looked nice and smooth and shiny, just like the original photo in the thread. It was too nice to fly so I had it on display for years. I finished it in the gloss white Canadian livery. It was a striking model.
