June 6th, 1944 was the start of the 'Liberation of France' otherwise known as 'D-Day' and the Allied Landings on the Normandy Beaches. My father was there as a British Royal Marine Commando and then he went across France, Belgium, Holland and Germany until he got to Berlin in 1946.

British RM Commandos landing at 'Sword Beach'. Not my Father's Unit as he was manning an anti-aircraft gun onboard a Destroyer standing off from the coast. On D-Day +1 he was part of the teams that blew the bottoms out of the concrete block ships that formed the temporary harbours and on D-Day +2 he actually went ashore at 'Sword Beach'.
