One Of Our Planes Is Missing! (Albatros D III)

Hi all,
I've been perusing the WWI aircraft offerings for CFS2, and I was immediately struck by the glaring absence of the Albatros D III! This was the most important and numerous fighter Germany had during the mid-to-late war period, with some examples serving all the way through 'till the Armistice, and yet the only Albatros birds I could find were all either Offag D I's or D Va's.

Nearly 1,900 Albatros D III's were built in total, by Albatros, Ost Albatros Werke and Offag, making it the most significant and numerically important German aircraft of the entire war. With a top speed of 109 mph, it was very fast, could climb very quickly and was wildly manoueverable, which is why the D III was the preferred mount for the majority of German and Austro-Hungarian aces, easily outclassing most of its Entente opponents. It could out-climb the SPAD S-7, outturn the Nieuport 17 and even match turn-for-turn against the infamous Sopwith "Tripehound." The Red Baron scored fully three quarters of all his kills in Albatros fighters, the majority of those in late-production D II's and D III's...and yet, it's just not there.

Now, I know less than nothing about creating aircraft models for Combat Flight Simulator, but I'm quite surprised that anybody would overlook the most important German fighter of WWI. I sincerely hope someone will get around to creating an Albatros D III soon, because I certainly wouldn't want to take to the unfriendly skies over Flanders Fields in any lesser bird!

I like the D V myself. But you are correct that it was an important aircraft.

It wasn't until the later Fokker's that the Germans had a better aircraft. Some might say "what about the DR I". As maneuverable as it was it wasn't fast enough to fight the SPAD XIII or the SE 5s or even the Camel for that matter.

The Germans clearly had "a better aircraft" during Bloody April of 1917, since by then virtually all the frontline Jastas had been re-equipped with the Albatros D III. It soon proved itself the master of the entire Sopwith tribe (Pup, Tripehound and Camel) the somewhat improved Nieuport 16c and the greatly improved 17, and even the mighty SPAD S7.

While the later D V and D Va were prettier, and definitely slightly faster than the D III, they were also slightly less agile; that's what happens when you add over 100 lbs to an already rather weight-sensitive airframe. This difference is most readily apparent when you top out of a climb, then try to perform a snap roll; the D Va kind of "hesitates" or "wallows" a bit at first, then responds rather sluggishly, where the D III instantly leaps to obey virtually all inputs at anything above takeoff speed.

I've only just finished trying out the WWI variant of CFS2, and I can't say I was greatly impressed; most enemy aircraft types completely failed to load, and switching between views was laborious and slow. Then again, the person who sent it to me indicated that it was a somewhat stripped-down version, so that might account for that. (Either way, it's got a long way to go to beat what is apparently the "gold standard" of WWI combat flight sims, RB3D.)

Still, I'm nothing if not stubborn, so I'll keep trying to make it work; being permanently disabled and in constant chronic pain, I have a great deal of free time on my hands, and am in need of as many mental diversions as possible to keep myself from brooding too much. :banghead:

Thanks for the helpful suggestions, and I'll certainly check them out, although I may need a tutorial on adding aircraft, scenery and/or missions to CFS2, since it seems to be a little more difficult than it is in CFS3. :dizzy:

CFS2 aircraft will handle different from CFS3. They might feel slow or laborsome at first. I've made an update for all of the Aerocrate aircraft that may help the AI fight better.

The Aerocrate's site is a great starting point. There is an entire 1916 Campaign for both the German and English sides. You can find all need scenery, Aircraft and other bits to get yourself started. the Free flight site has some tips in the WWI page to get yourself a clean install.

I'm constantly working on my WWI scenery. I have over thirty aerodromes that work with the aercrate scenery. I'm also working on the Tondern Raid. As well as another Duel of Aces mission with Udet and Guynemer. I've gotten myself sidetracked as of late but I'm still working on them. My last bit will be a Belgian Campaign that currently has 5 missions either completed or mostly finished.

For now checkout those sites. There are a few others here that my chime in on WWI in CFS2. I hope you enjoy.
